The concept of a Servant Leader is fascinating because it seems to be an oxymoron. How can one be a servant if they are to lead? This seems even stranger when placed in the context of military leaders. Robert Greenleaf argued that "The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead."' The centenary of Western Australian Women's suffrage in 1999 has seen a resurgence in interest in the history of women in W.A. While there exists a substantial body of historical resources, extensive guides to these resources are lacking. The majority of general histories of Australian women and Australian suffrage rarely treat W.A. in much detail.

The Latter-day Saint settlements in southeastern Utah, namely Bluff, Monticello and Blanding, were impacted by the physical and cultural geography of the area. These geographic elements hindered, and in some cases prevented, the Latter-day Saint colonizers from fulfilling the seven basic principles of Latter-day Saint expansion and colonization in the Great Basin. The impacts of physical geography were the geology, the climate, the soil and the rivers and streams. The impacts of cultural geography were the Navajo Indian Tribe, the Paiute Indian Tribe, and the criminal element. This thesis discusses the geographic elements of the area, how they impacted the …

This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of utopian discourse about marriage in mid-nineteenth-century America. Although utopian communities are usually approached within the fields of history and sociology, a rhetorical analysis adds to the discussion by uncovering the discursive complexity of marriage beliefs within a rapidly changing culture. Discursive features of the Shaker, Oneida Community and Latter-day Saint texts are outlined and compared according to the following format:

In this thesis, I will proceed as follows: my first chapter will be a general overview of epideictic rhetoric, focusing on the limitations of how it has traditionally been viewed and understood by theorists. At the end of that chapter I will establish a working definition of epideictic which extends traditional views about how epideictic can function in certain types of writings, focusing on the important role of the speaker in epideictic rhetoric and how it can work in enabling a community to create a collective identity. Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards

The Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition used photography to address two agendas, both of which were grounded in the temporal ambiguities of photography. Photography was used first as an integrated tool of anthropological investigation, particularly in the field of salvage ethnography and through “reenactment”; and second as a site of social interaction between the expedition and the Torres Strait Islanders through the exchange and display of photographs. I argue that these two agendas and their function as “history” are grounded in the temporal ambiguities inherent in photographic inscription. This thesis presents the 1919 revolution in Egypt and its effects on the Egyptian political arena as portrayed by the political cartoons during that period. The political cartoons portrayed a visual and tangible approach to a review of nationalism during this era. The cartoons also focused on Egyptian efforts to end British colonialism and imperialism. A review of the cartoons within a six-year period (1918- 1924) yielded one hundred and eighty-two political cartoons. The criteria for the selection of the cartoons was their political nature -pertaining to political actors and politics. The cartoons followed closely the rise and fall of …

This thesis concerns the white women of Fredericksburg, Virginia, during and immediately after the Civil War. Between 1861-1865, Fredericksburg existed in the no-man's land between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The town was bombarded, occupied by enemy forces, and ransacked. Military control of the town changed hands 10 times. Four major battles were fought around Fredericksburg, resulting in over 100,000 casualties. Throughout the conflict, Fredericksburg's white women were in the thick of the action - supporting their troops, nursing the wounded, and managing the increasingly desperate struggle to provide food and shelter for their families. In the years surrounding the United States Supreme Court's ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson, many states passed Jim Crow laws to limit the rights of black citizens. Jim Crow laws and practices invaded nearly every facet of life in the South. Bowling Green, Kentucky, was no different. By the early twentieth century, it had a number of Jim Crow facilities and institutions, supported by custom and often times with the force of the law. At that time, Bowling Green was home to a thriving black community despite prejudice and inequality. Black children, for example, attended separate elementary schools in the …

African Architectural Transference To The South Carolina Low Country, 1700-1880, Fritz Hamer

There is growing historical and archaeological evidence that African style housing was an integral part of slave communities on plantations in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Besides the "shotgun" house, other African house forms were built in North America before descendants of African slaves became acculturated to western construction techniques. The rarity of historical and archaeological evidence of these structures can be attributed to the culture bias of early white observers and the poor preservation of these impermanent structures in the archaeological record.

John Marshall Harlan, a Kentuckian who served on the United States Supreme Court from 1877 to 1911, was often the only Justice who supported the civil and political rights of African Americans. His jurisprudence was interesting because it combined traditional elements of the Court's Gilded Age views and fundamental ideas of mid-twentieth-century judicial race philosophy. The events that reshaped Harian's race philosophy illustrate how he made the transition from slave owner to defender of individual rights. Significant to his judicial ideology was his interpretation of dual federalism and the intent of the framers of the Civil War Amendments. While the …
