Making A Bear Of A Cub: American Policy Makers' Perceptions At The Origin Of The Cold War, Daniel R. Catone

Whittier Scholars Program

This project examines the Cold War’s identity and origin, including the perceptions of American policy makers and their effect on policies. This study works to prove the vague and contradictory perceptions of policy makers were powerful and largely the source and cause of the Cold War. This approach is completed in two ways: identifying the most important ideas expressed and held by policy makers and also by giving their thoughts and opinions historical context, showing their political impact. The second method is by showing how American perceptions of the Soviet Union influence diplomatic relations with that country. This study also …

The Forgotten Origins Of The Ecumenical Movement In England: The Grindelwald Conferences, 1892-95, Christopher Oldstone-Moore

Ruth Rouse, writing in A History of the Ecumenical Movement, made an extraordinary claim about the origins of modern ecumenism. She identified two factors in the 1890s that, in her words, "changed the course of Church history and made possible the modern ecumenical movement." One was the Student Christian Movement, established m 1895 by the American Methodist layman, John R. Mott. The other factor was the Grindelwald (Switzerland) Reunion Conferences, an assembly mostly of English church leaders organized by a Methodist minister, Henry Lunn, between 1892 and 1895. In this chapter, I gather the evidence for the Athenian cult of the Thracian goddess Bendis, who was officially worshipped both by Thracians and by Athenian citizens from the end of the fifth century B.C. on. I also compare the historical record with the literary characterizations of the Thracians, and I examine the connection between religious, political, and ethnic identity and the ways in which the cult of Bendis reflects ambivalent Athenian attitudes toward their northern neighbors. The cult of Bendis in Athens reproduces on the level of ritual the polarity of Greeks versus barbarians that exists on the level …
