Terroir is a French term widely used in wine circles to mean “the taste of the place.” The terroir of Oregon wine combines environmental and human elements to produce distinguishing flavors and reveals the histories of grape growers and winemakers in the state. A new archive at Linfield College, the Oregon Wine History Archive (OWHA), collects that history and makes it available to researchers and the public. Library professionals Rachael Cristine Woody and Rich Schmidt tell the story of OWHA’s origins and mission, which is to document all aspects of the wine industry by collecting and preserving historical materials such …

Chronicles takes history and reconstructs it to make it more acceptable in terms of its time and place. The Chronicler writes a form of revisionist religious history, to revitalize, reinvigorate, and renew Judaism for the returning exiles from Babylon and their descendants. Chronicles is selective history. The Chronicler understands that Moses created the nation of Israel from a group of slaves, and that David created a dynastic monarchic system of government. By the time Chronicles is written, that system was gone and what replaces it is a religion based on the Temple, the cultus and the attendant Levitical personnel.

Historians have considered some aspects of the impact of the war on higher education, but their work usually focuses on student experiences as soldiers or includes brief analyses of the war period in a larger institutional analysis. Their research does reinforce the unique nature, however, of circumstances at the University of Michigan, where the war period saw increases in enrollment and the expansion of curriculum.

This study tells the story of white female criminals and addresses the problem of the white female criminality and the resulting reaction of the patriarchal society in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War, specifically the years 1861-1864. During the Civil War, white female criminality became a daily occurrence because of the wartime conditions in Richmond, such as inflation and overpopulation. Because of the established patriarchal society and the lack of emphasis on the women's rights movement in the South, the female involvement in crime during the war was extremely shocking to the male driven society. This article argues that history is more than discourses. It uses the case of football/soccer in order to explore the tensions that crisscross professional discourses –those articulated by the emergent physical education professors- and corporal practices –those of children inside and outside primary school- since the end of the 19th century up to the 1950s. The discussion aims at weaving these issues with two key issues of the period: the construction of the “Argentine race” and the history of tuberculosis.

He faced skepticism and criticism from all sides, and experienced considerable doubt, but he pressed on.

Ricoeur And Foucault: Between Ontology And Critique, Patrick Gamez

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, I trace some of Ricoeur’s criticisms of Foucault in his major works on historiography, and evaluate them. I find that Ricoeur’s criticisms of Foucault’s archaeological project in Time and Narrative are not particularly worrisome, and that Foucault’s “critical” project actually provides alternatives for enriching and expanding on some of Ricoeur’s later insights in Memory, History, Forgetting and – in particular – for troubling the distinction made between critique and ontology.
