In an age of supersonic jets and satellite-guided bombs, it is hard to imagine that the United States would ever send American troops behind enemy lines in little more than a plywood box covered with canvas, but during World War II that is exactly what happened. In fact, a team of six to ten men assembled America’s first stealth fighter in about eight hours using only a kit of five oak crates and no power tools (Brennan 1991,16-17). It was called the WACO CG-4A, a glider aircraft that carried the heralded 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions into World War II’s …

Foreword to A Memoir of Ireland’s Nascent Years, by Irish language journalist and writer Tomás Bairéad (translated and edited by Mícheál Ó hAodha). Forthcoming from The Edwin Mellen Press, New York. Tomás Bairéad (1893-1973) is well known for a number of collections of short stories in Irish. He invented a version of short-hand for the Irish language. From Moycullen, Co Galway, he was involved in the Irish War of Independence and covered the Irish Civil War as a journalist. He edited the Irish language page in the Irish Independent for a number of years.

A comparative study of how myth, history and women’s voices function in the poetry of two South American poets, Astrid Fugellie (Chile) and Diana Bellessi (Argentina). Fugellie’s poems reveal a history that is oriented from feminine, indigenous and myth-centered ideas, while Bellessi’s poetic voice constructs a cultural utopia, mapping native American (continental) presence. In each case, the poets allude to a voice that gives form to myth, and in so doing, establishing close contact with nature. From Indigenous female voices fixed on regional landscapes in Fugellie to the fleeting dancer in Bellessi, two nearly opposite movements configure and found Latin …

The historical novel, Cortes Cenquizqui, set in sixteenth century Mexico and Spain, follows the conflicted lives and minds of several characters through an age of freshly crossing culture, language, and power. The narrator, Maria de Quesada of high ranking Spanish and Mexica parents, resents the white world for condemning her work as a female healer or curandera. Yet she acknowledges that she is ill-equipped to leave Mexico City to live in the outlying Indigenous villages. Maria recalls the tale of her three brothers who were caught in a web of pride and prejudices. Her interjections throughout shed light on questions …
