Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke
Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …

The Bridge
In the late Fall of 1890, Father went to the United States to get a job and to make a new home for us all. From Brooklyn the Reverend Anderson helped to send him on his way west, since he had been a farmer. At Chicago the Reverend Nielsen sent him to the Danish School and settlement at Elk Horn, Iowa, where he studied a little English and hired out on a farm, there to learn more English by practical experience.

English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart
English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The art of translation lies in a literary limbo, subservient to the creativity and expressions of others. Yet in attempting to bridge two different languages and cultures, it entails unique problems as difficult as those encountered in any other literary activity.
The following is the report of a project carried out with the Translation Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the fall of 1975 as a senior Honors project in fulfillment of requirements for graduation from the Honors Program at U.S.U. Since this internship itself formed the bulk of my project, the following is presented …
Human Love And Divine Love: The Platonic Matrix In C.S. Lewis, Laura Case
Human Love And Divine Love: The Platonic Matrix In C.S. Lewis, Laura Case
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A comparison of the writings of Plato and C.S. Lewis reveals a common idea that human love is not sufficient for man. An examination of Plato’s Symposium and Lewis’s Till We Have Faces and The Four Loves, in particular, shows that both writers illustrate that man must ascend the ladder of love in order to meet the source of all love: Divine Love. Concerned with man’s innate needs and ethics, both Plato and Lewis argue that there is a universal principle of goodness known to all men of all cultures. Lewis argues, especially in The Abolition of Man, that man …

A Look At The Neb-Ot, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer, Frederick W. Danker
A Look At The Neb-Ot, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer, Frederick W. Danker
Concordia Theological Monthly
A reviewer of the New English Bible (NEB) is inclined to compare this text with that of the 18-year-old Revised Version (RSV) and the new Jerusalem Bible. Before he compares these three versions, he needs to note the difference in backgrounds in each case. The RSV is, of course, not a new translation, but as the name indicates, it is a revision of the old King James Version. Its purpose is to bring the Authorized Version up-to-date, modernizing words and phrases that might not be intelligible to the reader of the 20th century.

The Rise And Fall Of Dick Diver : The Intricate Destiny Of A Spoiled Priest, Wendy Martin Seeger
The Rise And Fall Of Dick Diver : The Intricate Destiny Of A Spoiled Priest, Wendy Martin Seeger
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In his general plan for Tender Is The Night, Fitzgerald delineates Dick Diver as "a natural idealist, a spoiled priets, givin in for various causes to the idea of the haute bourgeoise [sic] and ih his rise to the top of the social world losing his idealism, his talent and turning to drink and dissipation."1
The rise and fall of Dick Diver is the central concern of Tender Is The Night, and an analysis of the novel reveals that Fitzgerald meticulously arranged the details of Diver's intricate destiny. Many readers of the novel, however, were unable to understand the …
