My proposal for my senior honors project is to produce a completed work of fiction. Specifically, this will be a short story consisting of around twenty double spaced pages, minimum six thousand words, of original writing accompanied by an eight to ten page critical essay exploring my literary influences as well as a five to seven page self analysis of my individual writing process. It is my intention to produce a work within the gothic-thriller genre, deriving inspiration from authors such as Joyce Carol Oates and Flannery O’Connor.

This paper examines the history of English Language Education (ELE) and its societal role in China from 1900 to 1990. Throughout different periods in China's modern history, ELE was associated with key issues, including the revitalization of the declining Qing dynasty, modernization during the Republican era, and Cold War competitions during the Mao era. To investigate the connections between ELE and the political trends and movements in modern China, my research examines textbooks written and used in 1913, 1976, and 1979 China. The Corinthian

This paper compares Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne and its French translation by Graeme Allwright. It takes translation principles into account, by relying on translator Antoine Berman’s “Twelve Deforming Tendencies of Translation.” In his reliance on the instrumental model, which tries to find equivalence and treat the translation as a reproduction of the original, Allwright’s translation misinterprets several important elements in the original, namely the relationship between the speaker and the Suzanne character. In Cohen’s original, the character Suzanne is expected to follow the speaker and is changed by his “superior” intellect, while in Allwright’s version Suzanne is likened to a …

African American Vernacular English (AAVE) has been spoken by African Americans for centuries but has only recently been acknowledged as a distinct dialect. It is often used in tandem with Standard English, through a concept referred to as code-switching. Although linguists have done substantial work to validate AAVE, there is an incomplete understanding of why the dialect developed, and, in particular, what functions the dialect serves for its speakers.
