A Conductor’S Analysis Of Selected A Cappella Works By Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Bernard Chandler Iii Jan 2023

A Conductor’S Analysis Of Selected A Cappella Works By Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Bernard Chandler Iii

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Despite experiencing a great deal of recognition in his lifetime, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s music is seldom performed today. His more famous pieces were his choral cantatas, but they require resources that most choirs cannot access. To encourage performance of his music, this monograph focuses on four of his part songs, which are much more accessible.

While many choirs will have the voicings to perform these pieces, they are very chromatic. Coleridge-Taylor is a product of late Romanticism and he employs many chromatic techniques to embellish his music. Inexperienced choirs will struggle to maintain a sense of tonal center if they are …

Using Song To Teach Sight Words, Taylor Hagood Guin Jan 2022

Using Song To Teach Sight Words, Taylor Hagood Guin

Graduate Research Showcase

This research is about how a group of seven kindergarten classes used a short and straightforward song to recognize the following six common kindergarten sight words: on, off, up, us, no, & go. As a current music educator and former middle grades English teacher, I wanted to create an opportunity to establish cross-curricular connections in my music classroom. For this specific experiment, seven different classes, including General Education, Self-Contained Special Education, and English Language Learning classes, were selected. They were taught these six sight word songs through the “Sight Word Song.” I selected the sight words specifically because the students …

A Lyrical Comparison Of Suzanne And Its Translation, Natalie Sadler Nov 2020

A Lyrical Comparison Of Suzanne And Its Translation, Natalie Sadler

The Corinthian

This paper compares Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne and its French translation by Graeme Allwright. It takes translation principles into account, by relying on translator Antoine Berman’s “Twelve Deforming Tendencies of Translation.” In his reliance on the instrumental model, which tries to find equivalence and treat the translation as a reproduction of the original, Allwright’s translation misinterprets several important elements in the original, namely the relationship between the speaker and the Suzanne character. In Cohen’s original, the character Suzanne is expected to follow the speaker and is changed by his “superior” intellect, while in Allwright’s version Suzanne is likened to a …

Requiem, Jacob K. Lee May 2017

Requiem, Jacob K. Lee

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance

Traditionally, the requiem form began as a Catholic mass to honor the dead. Today, the requiem is generally composed conveying messages of solace to troubled hearts. Many composers, such as Britten and Rutter, choose to abandon some of the orthodox text of the mass to provide an added measure of connection for the audience. The result of these later requiems is often a baring of the composer’s soul – something profoundly personal shared in the hope of inspiring others. This latter process is my aim in creating my Requiem. I approach this end in several ways, compositionally: There is a …

19th Century Sea Shanties: From The Capstan To The Classroom, Sharon Marie Risko Jan 2015

19th Century Sea Shanties: From The Capstan To The Classroom, Sharon Marie Risko

ETD Archive

Sea shanties were much more than simple folk songs of the sea. They were an integral tool in wooden ship operations in the 19th century. They include universal themes that connect us with the past telling us tales of love, adventure, far away destinations, and of trials and tribulations. The tunes are rollicking, the refrains memorable, and are to be sung with ultimate abandon. When brought into the classroom, teachers can introduce musical concepts, enrich lessons, and encourage student participation through the rousing singing of sea shanties. In this study the historical evolution and function of sea shanties are explored. …

Bleaching To Reach: Skin Bleaching As A Performance Of Embodied Resistance In Jamaican Dancehall Culture, Treviene A. Harris Jan 2014

Bleaching To Reach: Skin Bleaching As A Performance Of Embodied Resistance In Jamaican Dancehall Culture, Treviene A. Harris

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how skin bleaching can be understood within the cultural context of Jamaican dancehall. I argue that as a cultural practice, skin bleaching can be viewed as a critique of the concomitant structural inequalities precipitated by colorism, which is a by-product of racism. In proposing skin bleaching as a queer performance of color, I attempt to illustrate the manner in which the lightening of the skin exposes the instability of racism and colorism as socially constructed, discursive regimes. If race and skin color are biological and embodied facts dictated by social reality, then bodies, which are racially marked …

Transverse Flutes By London Makers, 1750-1900, In The Collections Of The Shrine To Music Museum, Amy M. Shaw

Library Staff Publications

In London during the early 19th century, the flute achieved a degree of popularity that some writers have called “flutomania.” The city was home to many instrument makers who created a dazzling array of flutes to meet the demands of the many professional and amateur players. This master's thesis, completed at the University of South Dakota, explores the history of English flutemaking from the mid-18th century to the end of the 19th-century. It includes a catalog of 73 flutes from the collections of the Shrine to Music Museum, which is now the National Music Museum (http://orgs.usd.edu/nmm/).

The Little Mohea, Harvey Gurney Apr 1991

The Little Mohea, Harvey Gurney

Maine Song and Story Sampler

"The Little Mohea," also known by many other names and spellings, is an old song that likely developed from an older English broadside song known as "The Indian Lass." Most folklorists agree that "Mohea" probably developed in its American form among sailors, and some even point to whaling ships specifically.

Canaday-I-O, Robert French

Maine Song and Story Sampler

The major recurring theme in these folksongs from Maine and Maritime Canada is the flow of cultural products and people within the area of New Hampshire, Maine, and eastern Canada. But while this cultural and demographic exchange helped define the region, it did not mean there was no rivalry or animosity between states, provinces, or nations.
