The creators of trompe l'oeil works, whether drawings, paintings, or three-dimensional objects are less concerned with replicating reality using pictorial devices such as perspective, and instead concentrate their efforts on precisely rendering the richness of the material world. The object then goes beyond a work of art and becomes a carefully defined artifact which frces the eyse to contront its absolute reality.
The Dynamics Of Undeclared Freshman Attrition, Amy L. Wright
The Dynamics Of Undeclared Freshman Attrition, Amy L. Wright
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Of the problems facing college administrators today, the expected decline in the traditional-age student population is perhaps the most serious. Gone are the days of the Sixties and Seventies when the post-war baby boomers filled the college classrooms. This projected decrease in student numbers has led to an increased awareness of the problem of student retention and to an increase in the level of importance placed on it. Where once the emphasis seemed limited to the attraction of students, it has become apparent that there must also be a concern with retaining students once they matriculate. Research has also shown …

Tsnungwe Tribal History: Creating Social Science Curriculum For Trinity County, Dena Ammon Magdaleno
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Historical resources for the native people in Trinity County, California, have not been gathered, organized, or utilized in the past for educational purposes. Therefore, students in Trinity County have almost certainly been learning the history of Indians from areas other than Trinity County. Students educated in Trinity County schools need to be informed about the cultures and histories of Trinity County natives. The traditions and lifestyle of one Trinity County tribe, the Tsnungwe, who have also been called the Trinity, Trinity River, Southern Hupa, Keita, Helwe, and South Fork Indians, are the focus of this project. Resources have been located …

The Swiss Colony Of New Glarus: A Study Of A Successful Ethnic Settlement, Jessica T. Skropanic
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis is a cultural study of the history, community, and ethnic identity of the village New Glarus in southern Wisconsin. It discusses the use of culture to promote tourism, an approach which allows the town to survive economically when so many farming and dairy communities are dying out. It examines how the participation in tourism has created solidarity and cultural pride amongst the people of the town. My objective is to document and analyze the creation and development of this community and to establish the variables that have enabled New Glarus to remain a relatively homogeneous ethnic community for …

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The printing of this book marks the end of a year of deliberating, searching, sifting, procrastinating and finally decision making. These pages include what I consider to be some of the finest work by young artists in Cache Valley. I must admit, I am rather in awe of my contributors. I have always been frustrated by the fact that I seem to have no outlet for my creative urges. Something always seems to get lost between my brain and my pen, So, my "consolation prize" is the opportunity to work with some artists whose talents I respect very much.

Bouwsma Paper Contest
Thinking about fiction raises some important questions that need to be answered if we are to grasp the essence of a fictional work. The questions I feel a theory of fiction needs to answer are as follows; Why do we react emotionally to fictional works when we are campletely aware of their fictionality? Why do we re-read books when we know what happens before re-reading? How are we to judge a work of fiction as a work of art’ When trying to come up with a theory of fiction, philosophers have proposed a wide range af solutions. These solutions have …

Social And Economic Factors Of Veterans Upward Bound Students In Predicting Academic Success In Post-Secondary Education, Caerwen Williams
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The purpose of this study was to analyze certain social, economic and other demographic factors, in order to predict the academic success of veterans who completed the Veterans Upward Bound Program at Humboldt State University, Arcata, California, and who entered post-secondary education. For this study a random sample of 100 veterans who had completed the Veterans Upward Bound Program between Fall 1978 and Spring 1989 was used. The subjects were initially recruited by the U.S. Department of Education funded program, whose purpose is to enroll low income and first-generation veterans and prepare them academically for higher education. Data were collected …
