Contemporary theory and criticism of photography has generally taken the form of a face-off between formalism and contextualism. The first postion contends that what is required to understand a photograph is prmarily a close examination of its formal structure, the ability to connect it to other art forms, and perhpas some knowledge of the artist's biography and intentions. The second position holds that photographs have no meaning outside of the scoial and political context of their making. For the most part, these positions have been hardened and adversarial.

Personal Assistance For People With Disabilities: An Exploratory Study, Laura Estetter

The qualitative study of psychological and social factors plays a significant role in determining adequacy of assistance, given the interpersonal dynamics of the relationship between care recipient and personal assistant. Assistance rendered out of love and familial duty carries with it different motivational and behavioral factors than assistance rendered for money. Nevertheless, paid personal assistance remains the only viable option for many people with chronic illness and disability who continue to live independently in the community. The mass media identify raves as the exclusive setting for consuming ecstasy. Ecstasy is a variety of compounds mimicking the effects of MDMA. Since ecstasy is an illegal drug often consumed at raves, moral entrepreneurs have defined raves as a threat to children and public safety. Moral entrepreneurs have mobilized to prohibit raves using legislation. I hypothesize that claims-makers have constructed in textual mass media the moral panic about raves, which resulted in legislation that was approved by moral entrepreneurs to control raves. I employed two separate studies using quantitative and qualitative methodologies to test the moral panic theory. In …

One of the greatest accessible records of trace and the past is the landscape, which over time acts as a repository of evidence from natural forces and things that humans have created or changed. This thesis considers trace as material and nonmaterial evidence, remnants, marks, vestiges of events past and forgotten or remembered. How can a past that is evidenced only by its traces be read within a landscape context by disciplines of knowledge production? The subsequent interpretation, generation of meaning and understanding of traces contributes to the knowledge, mythology and perceptions of reality for differing groups in different places. …

Judith Dinham is a mid-career artist who combines an art practice with her position as Senior Lecturer in Visual Art Education at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia. Her art and research interest centres on conceptions of landscape. The desert from a feminine perspective and the role of travel are of particular interest. To this end she has worked in the Australian desert over many years (primarily Meeline Station, near Mt Magnet where her sister and family live) and had residencies in the USA and Italy. For more than a century, the Brigham Young Monument in Salt Lake City has been the center of sometimes acrimonious controversy. The idea and organization to create a monument were begun in 1891. The statue of Brigham Young was completed by Cyrus Dallin in 1893. Many delays in raising funds caused the monument not to be finished until 1900. Thereafter it often became the target of those trying to improve traffic conditions in the downtown area. In 1993, the monument was moved just north of the intersection to improve the flow of traffic. On the monuments one hundredth anniversary, "The …

Science and technology are frequently confused. This essay points out the bases for this confusion and then focuses on a basic distinction, namely, that whereas science brings us information that we have little choice but to absorb and reflect upon, technology is something that humans elect to do and, hence, can also elect not to do. It is proposed that technological ethics are most cogently undertaken with scientific understanding as the linchpin and religious/artistic sensibilities as the muse.

Rap music has been characterized as a significant cultural form of resistance to the oppression experienced by African-Americans in post-industrial America (Rose 1994; Martinez 1997). Much of the literature that addresses rap music is primarily based on gangsta rap or rap music otherwise created and performed by black men. Through the method of content analysis, I focus on women’s rap music—which has been largely ignored in the academic literature—to explore the meanings and identities that black women express through rap music. Successful aging has long been a focus in aging studies. Previous researchers have formulated bipolar theories, examined groups of successful-agers, and tested many variables thought to contribute to successful aging. Defined as the most effective way for the older person to adapt to the physical, psychological, and social changes that occur in later life, other research has suggested that successful aging might even be a matter of subjective definition. There is little to debate about the nature of Serbian political life since the mid-1980s-it has been highly nationalized, to the point that one can argue that a consensus existed among Serbian public figures that the Serbs' very existence was threatened by their neighbors. This consensus links political, cultural, and intellectual elites regardless of their ideological background. It draws together figures representing great diversity in Serbia. On our society, girls and women face unique physical and psychic dangers. There is insufficient support for respectful surfacing and articulation of voice, neither are there sufficient tools with which to combat the socio-environmental phenomena of “hitting the wall” and “going underground.” (Gilligan 1983). While the creative process is full of risk taking and challenge for all, it presents additional problems for girls and women. On March 11, 1871 Samuel D. Gross, M.D., the internationally celebrated surgeon and author, entreated fellow Jefferson alumni to "adorn the halls" with portraits of those who had "devoted their lives to the service of the school," and thus "inspire the pupil with ambition to excel in great and noble works." This clarion call to emulate European medical and scientific institutions by memorializing their great men was taken up almost immediately.

One hundred and twenty-five years later, Thomas Jefferson university is still securing portraits, accepting art donations and bequests, and exhibiting art works effectively. By manifesting an appreciation for the …
