In a previous article, I have mentioned my view that stained glass work is akin to impressionism. We use the features of the glass to suggest detail in our subject matter. However, I often find that for some details, this approach is not adequate. For an example, see the scales in Koi, figure 1. It is also not always practical to implement this fine detail by joining large numbers of very small pieces of glass. My work initiates a conversation about corporeal strangeness by creating ambiguity or mystery where simultaneous qualities of sensuality, vulnerability, and disgust exist. I create contradictions, subverting pleasing or friendly forms with uncomfortable qualities to elicit a sort of visceral consternation. Cues pointing in different directions can remain simply experiential or they can refer to the complexity of the body and raise questions about human attitudes towards it. Abstraction is used as a visual shorthand or entry point to the body in an effort to describe commonality among humans rather than emphasizing their differences. In this way, there is more freedom …

“Plating” is a piece of stained glass jargon. It refers to the practice of using more than one layer of glass in the construction of a panel. The layers are not fused together. They are simply stacked up, one on top of another and joined by soldering foil or came. I would like to spend a little time on the reasons for using this plating technique. In a future article I may say more about the techniques themselves, but the why’s are more important than the how’s.

I got my first camera when I was in third grade—a Brownie Hawkeye flash model with a snazzy little camera case. The instruction manual provided six simple steps for taking successful pictures.

I will argue that the leprous body was an intermediary to the body of Christ in the minds of late medieval viewers. They could utilize this accessible body as a tool to cultivate a closer relationship with Christ. I will explore imagery of Christ and lepers created in England, Flanders, France, Germany, and Italy from 1300 through 1500 to demonstrate my argument. I will compare representations of the Flagellation of Christ and Christ as the Man of Sorrows to images of Christ healing lepers in order to show that the leprous body could be understood as a substitute for the …

This paper is a qualitative study of Movimiento Pacto por la Cultura , a group of cultural activists that operate in the hyper-violent reality of 21st century Ciudad Juárez. This work looks at Pacto as a case study to explore the possibilities of culture as a tool of activism in a particular time and place, exploring in the ways in which economic development policies, deficiencies in infrastructure, and rising violence both effect and can be affected by cultural processes.
