Performing Brazilian Identity: The Cultural Politics Of Carmen Miranda, Nicole M. Pineiro Serrano
Performing Brazilian Identity: The Cultural Politics Of Carmen Miranda, Nicole M. Pineiro Serrano
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This honors undergraduate thesis examines how Carmen Miranda’s performances shaped Brazilian national identity in both Brazilian cinema and Hollywood in the mid-twentieth century. Through film analysis, historical research, and cultural theory, the study examines Miranda’s public persona and the symbolic significance of the Baiana costume, with respect to Brazil’s Estado Novo regime, and Hollywood’s own depictions of Latin America. Overall, it argues that Miranda’s image functioned as a site of cultural negotiation, where Brazilian cultural expression met Hollywood’s exoticizing portrayals, but the encounter did not always stay as a fixed stereotype. The study also examines the tensions between authenticity, commodification, …
Designing Rhetorical Education For Online Audiences, Nicholas Dixon
Designing Rhetorical Education For Online Audiences, Nicholas Dixon
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This project demonstrates a multimodal education for online audiences through the creation of a YouTube video, What is Rhetoric? The literature from composition, education, and media asserts that online multimodal media is useful for idea production, civic discussion, and learning. This project follows the idea that online multimodal digital media are valuable forms for meeting audiences with access to rhetorical knowledge, both within academic institutions and in the education of public audiences. In Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture, Henry Jenkins highlights the challenge online participants face in recognizing the ways media shapes perceptions of the world (xii). Rhetoric is …
Mycoethics: Reverence For Life In Light Of Modern Science, Charis E. Meyers
Mycoethics: Reverence For Life In Light Of Modern Science, Charis E. Meyers
Honors Undergraduate Theses
There is a 21st century wave of passion surrounding fungi and mycology, and it’s becoming louder and louder. The mycoenthusiasts themselves have a uniquely inspired ethical system born out of their science, and my aim is to both formally introduce their position, including many unspoken foundations, and defend its potential. I call this position mycoethics and attempt to collect it from the scattered tidbits in mycological media. I first identify its historical precedent, then spend a length of time establishing where its sense of goodness comes from, postulating it as a utilitarian offspring of Albert Schweitzer’s reverence for life. …

“What Am I Reading This Draft For?” Using Reading Filters To Enhance Your Peer Feedback, Kaitlin Clinnin, Mellisa Huffman, Benjamin Keating
“What Am I Reading This Draft For?” Using Reading Filters To Enhance Your Peer Feedback, Kaitlin Clinnin, Mellisa Huffman, Benjamin Keating
English Faculty Research
Reading is a key part of the peer feedback process, and yet how to read peer drafts often receives less attention than other stages of this process.1 As a result, students may ask, “What am I reading this draft for?” Within this question are student concerns about the rhetorical and pedagogical purposes of reading peer drafts as well as the students’ own credibility and ability to read peer work compared to other presumably more “expert” sources of feedback. The chapter helps students grasp the social and rhetorical purposes of reading for peer workshops. It then presents a set of reading …
Beyond Humor: Code-Switching And Egyptian Modern Identity In Elkabeer Awy., Hala S. Hammad
Beyond Humor: Code-Switching And Egyptian Modern Identity In Elkabeer Awy., Hala S. Hammad
English Language and Literature
In the stylized Egyptian series ElKabeer Awy, code-switching is an artistic and performative tool by which the writers and actors achieve specific comedic effects and mirror the country's continuous interaction with the global culture. The series employs humor to depict the mixing of Egyptian morals with Western cultural influences. This study implements Poplack's (1980) code-switching categories and Giles' (1979) accommodation theory to analyze characters who code-switch to resemble or differ from their interlocutors. In addition, incongruity theory offers a basis for understanding how some instances of code-switching result in laughter. The results show a high frequency of code-switching among the …
The Representation Of Urban Peripherality In Selected Noir Narratives, Mona Sayed
The Representation Of Urban Peripherality In Selected Noir Narratives, Mona Sayed
English Language and Literature
This thesis examines the representation of two forms of urban peripherality, i.e. city periphery and peripheral city, in selected noir narratives from two Akashic short story collections, Brooklyn Noir (2004), edited by Tim McLoughlin, and Mumbai Noir (2012), edited by Altaf Tyrewala. The study investigates these representations to attempt forming a broader conceptualisation of urban peripherality that goes beyond the conventional Western one, which foregrounds the geographical divides as identifying features between urban centre and periphery. The thesis draws on the urban conceptual framework to conduct a close reading of the spatial, cultural, and social representations of urban peripheries within …
Establishing Legitimacy: Analysing Legitimation Strategies In Who’S Anti-Smoking Discourse., Hala S. Hammad
Establishing Legitimacy: Analysing Legitimation Strategies In Who’S Anti-Smoking Discourse., Hala S. Hammad
English Language and Literature
Children spend almost one-third of their day in schools, and much of the peer pressure arises in this educational setting. In September 2023, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released two publications to urge schools around the world to take the necessary steps toward creating a smoke and nicotine-free environment and implementing policies that prevent young people from starting smoking. The language of such documents usually conceals a high level of legitimation and persuasion to reach the target audience and achieve the intended goals. Meanwhile, the organisation strengthens its legitimacy when its actions are perceived by the public as desirable, moral, …
The Dynamics Of Arabic Proverbs: A Pragma-Cognitive Study Of Folkloric Proverbs In The Egyptian Series El-Kabeer Awy, Hala S. Hammad
The Dynamics Of Arabic Proverbs: A Pragma-Cognitive Study Of Folkloric Proverbs In The Egyptian Series El-Kabeer Awy, Hala S. Hammad
English Language and Literature
This research presents a pragma-cognitive analysis of Arabic proverbs in the Sa'idi (Upper Egyptian) cultural context based on television discourse as its corpus. It investigates proverb usage, their roles in the communication of social norms, and the connections between language, thought, and culture. By employing a pragmatic framework based on Speech Act Theory and the concept of recontextualization, this study examines the use of indirect, culturally loaded speech acts and the endorsement of the local community as a source of metaphor and irony. The results show that the illocutionary force of a proverb is highly dynamic and shifts based on …

From Cinematography To Public Speaking: A Hyland’S (2005) Metadiscourse Model Case Study Analysis Of Spielberg’S Harvard Speech., Hala S. Hammad
English Language and Literature
The study explores the intersection of linguistic metadiscourse and cinematic narrative structure within the genre of public speaking, drawing on Joseph Campbell’s (1949) "Hero’s Journey" as a narrative framework. The paper argues that Steven Spielberg’s rhetorical success is rooted in his ability to direct a live linguistic performance that mirrors the hero’s journey of a film. Utilizing Hyland’s (2005) Metadiscourse Model, the study analyzes Spielberg’s 2016 Harvard Commencement Speech to determine how linguistic markers may function as directorial tools. The study suggests that Spielberg’s strategic placement of interactive markers to construct the Hero’s Journey narrative for the graduates may contribute …

‘She Dared Not’: Authority In The Monasteries Of The Diocese Of Lincoln, 1400-1540, Morgan Mcminn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Within monastic life, the Benedictine Rule prioritized the role of the abbot, and much of the everyday running of the house was left to his discretion. He was the elected father of the community, the pastor of the flock, the educator who instructed by word and example. He should discipline firmly but be loved and not feared, and he should play no favorite but rather adapt to the situation at hand. His brethren should obey him without question as the representative of Christ in the monastery, their self-will and earthly possessions submitted to him. These elements are also present in …

A New Method For Teaching Classical Improvisation In The Wind Band, Eric Anthony Brewer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT A New Method for Teaching Classical Improvisation in the Wind Band
In recent years there has been a renewed interest in the pedagogy of music improvisation taught in the eighteenth century Neapolitan Conservatories. This project continues that interest by introducing concepts from that pedagogy to the wind band classroom at the high school and collegiate levels. A new method for wind band that teaches basic concepts in music improvisation and trains students in elements of music composition is presented along with rehearsal techniques for implementing that method. The method introduces students to the elements of major and minor keys …

The Coal Mining Kids: Constructing A Working-Class Gay World In West Virginia (1900-2001), Hannah Ford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Located in southwestern West Virginia, Bluefield has been the site of Bluefield State University, the Norfolk & Western Railway headquarters, the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, and the Shamrock Bar. The Shamrock was a gay bar opened by Helen Compton, in operation from the late 1960’s until 2001. Bluefield’s early industrial success in coal mining and the railroad quickly urbanized the space between 1900 and 1930, facilitating a diverse, working-class cultural foundation for Bluefield’s gay world. In the 1960’s, urban renewal efforts initiated by the War on Poverty, in combination with public awareness of homosexuality induced by the Lavender Scare, set the …
Racial Resentment, Immigration Attitudes, And The Politics Of State Immigrant Policy Adoption In The United States, Cindy Osei Agyemang
Racial Resentment, Immigration Attitudes, And The Politics Of State Immigrant Policy Adoption In The United States, Cindy Osei Agyemang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Immigration remains one of the most contested public policy issues in the United States, and racial attitudes have become increasingly important in shaping public opinion and political debate. While prior research has shown a strong relationship between racial resentment and restrictive immigration attitudes, less is known about whether these attitudes extend to legislative discourse and the adoption of immigrant-inclusive state policies. This dissertation addresses that gap by examining the relationship between racial resentment and immigration politics across three levels of analysis: public opinion, legislative discourse, and state policy adoption. Using a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative …

"If I Knew Then What I Know Now": Analyzing Online Narratives Of Regretful Parents, Marina Binti Mohd Hamdan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This exploratory study seeks to understand the extent to which parenthood affects individual self-actualization by identifying the trade-offs, compromises, and sacrifices that parents make within the context of family life. Using a thematic analysis of 221 archived posts from the Reddit community r/regretfulparents, this study examines how social pressures surrounding parenthood may be related to experiences of parental regret. Specifically, it identifies two domains: pressures to be parents, including social norms, familial coercion, and interpersonal conflict, and pressures of parenting, including issues of labor, number of children, and challenging children. Across these domains, this study explores how tensions between personal …

A Survey Of Disability-Inclusive K-12 Public School Music Programs In The United States Where Best Buddies Friendship Programs Have Been Established, Geena Louise Jeffries Mattox
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the presence and structural characteristics of disability-inclusive band, orchestra, and choir programs serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) in K-12 public schools across the United States that implement the Best Buddies School Friendship Program. Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is defined as group of chronic, lifelong conditions that originate before age 22, affecting physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. Despite federal legislation, peer reviewed scholarship specifically addressing access to performance-based music ensembles for students with IDDs remain comparatively limited. Employing a survey distributed nationwide within a defined population of schools implementing Best Buddies Programs, administered via …
Forces Of Movement: How Changing Perceptions Of Slavery And Freedom Affected Black Lives In The Mason-Dixon Borderland, 1861-1872, Rachael B. Nicholas
Forces Of Movement: How Changing Perceptions Of Slavery And Freedom Affected Black Lives In The Mason-Dixon Borderland, 1861-1872, Rachael B. Nicholas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Mason-Dixon Line, first surveyed between 1763 and 1767, became the symbolic “dividing line” between free and slave states in antebellum America. This perception of the Mason-Dixon Line allowed a larger borderland to grow around it: the Mason-Dixon Borderland, which consisted of northern Maryland, Washington, D.C., southern Pennsylvania, northern Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley (western Virginia and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia).
Americans used slavery and freedom as referents to make decisions about survival, military policy, politics, and freedom-seeking during the Civil War. Those decisions had consequences for their movement across the Mason-Dixon Borderland, causing it to change as …
“Black Students Matter”: A Phenomenological Study Of Black Student Experiences At A Predominately White Institution In Appalachia During The Dual Pandemic Of Covid-19 And Systemic Anti-Black Racism, Toni Owens
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As the spread of COVID-19 escalated into a global pandemic in 2020, simultaneously, the nationwide media in the United States (U.S.) highlighted coverage of the country’s ongoing incidents of longstanding systemic anti-Black racism in America, another pandemic. In the Summer of 2020, a collective of Black students at West Virginia University (WVU) signed and publicly submitted a petition to the university’s leadership with a list of demands to address their needs as they were further exacerbated by the dual pandemic. This study is guided by the question, “What are the lived experiences of Black Students at West Virginia University during …
Formation-Based Analysis In Contemporary Saxophone Practice: A Case Study Of Ziwei Shi's The Blue Lotus Bloms, Jiageng Ren
Formation-Based Analysis In Contemporary Saxophone Practice: A Case Study Of Ziwei Shi's The Blue Lotus Bloms, Jiageng Ren
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines contemporary saxophone repertoire through a formation-based analytical approach, using Ziwei Shi’s The Blue Lotus Blooms as a case study. It is organized into three parts. Part I establishes the conceptual and methodological framework by introducing the concept of “formation-based analysis,” positioning the “condition of musical formation” as its core. Further situating the study within scholarship on practice-based research, cross-cultural theory, and modernism/postmodernism. Part II provides a detailed analytical and performance-based investigation of the work, including the collaborative commissioning process, the application of Thaat as a pitch resource, the role of extended techniques and embodied endurance, and contrasting …
Orogenesis, Timothy Ryan Butcher
Orogenesis, Timothy Ryan Butcher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis and accompanying exhibition explore the translation of panenhenic mystical experience and the collaboration with Appalachian natural spaces into abstracted landscape images. This work aims to “map” a sensation of fundamental unity and gesture toward the ineffable by utilizing found-object stamp printing, and automatic mark-making. Inspired by practical mystic traditions and contemporary landscape painting, this body of work, entitled Orogenesis, combines intricate, abstracted ink landscape drawings and photographs to create images suggestive of the mystical patterns in the process.

This thesis will document the process of designing the costumes for Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really, by Kate Hamill. It will detail a close reading of the text and how it differs from its original source material, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, an examination of the research process for this design, as well as an analysis of the design process and execution of costumes for this production. It will explore the challenges I faced as the Costume Designer on this production, including but not limited to: examining the gender dynamics involved in genderbending a well-known piece of literature, working within a …
Jazz And Classical Form In Selected Movements Of Nikolai Kapustin's Eight Concert Etudes Opus 40, Hsiaofen Lin
Jazz And Classical Form In Selected Movements Of Nikolai Kapustin's Eight Concert Etudes Opus 40, Hsiaofen Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research focuses on three etudes from Kapustin’s Eight Concert Etudes, Op. 40, offering analyses for “Prelude,” “Reverie,” and “Toccatina,” The analysis explores several interrelated issues: the extent to which jazz-derived formal structures may be discerned in Kapustin’s piano works beyond traditional classical models; the ways in which jazz structural frameworks interact with forms such as sonata, ternary, and through-composed designs; and the degree to which jazz formal procedures influence sectional organization, phrase structure, and large-scale form. A further concern is whether Kapustin’s use of jazz form serves merely as a stylistic reference or operates as a structurally determinative …
A Digital Audio Workstation-Based Analytical Framework For Contemporary Acoustic Music: Modeling Selected Excerpts By Viet Cuong, Robert Daniel Traugh
A Digital Audio Workstation-Based Analytical Framework For Contemporary Acoustic Music: Modeling Selected Excerpts By Viet Cuong, Robert Daniel Traugh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) has made sound recording, manipulation, MIDI sequencing, and digital live performance accessible to nearly anyone with a computer and an interest in digital music-making. A DAW’s functionality is modeled on decades of development in analog modular electronic instrument design and sound recording techniques. Theorist and composer Jonathan D. Kramer, through his work in the 1980’s, referred to the invention of sound recording as a catalyst of a temporal discontinuity experienced by Western-trained musicians. Since that time, these same sound recording techniques have become increasingly prevalent in modern society. This document proposes a DAW-based analytical framework …
More Than A Man: An Ethnomusicological Survey Of The Folklore Of John Henry And Resource Guide For “More Than A Man” By Shanyse Strickland, Clayton R. Heath
More Than A Man: An Ethnomusicological Survey Of The Folklore Of John Henry And Resource Guide For “More Than A Man” By Shanyse Strickland, Clayton R. Heath
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
“John Henry” exists as an enduring folk legend in the United States of America, representing the confluence of the Reconstruction Era, the economic utility of Appalachia and the Westward expansion of industry which left it behind. Though based on historical events, Henry’s fictional representation has diverted and evolved in music and other media from its inception in the oral tradition to the modern age. Through this progression, shared symbols have circulated, gathering embedded meanings and associating the folklore with specific communities. Henry’s representational identity has been signaled with the creation and distribution of each version of his story, both complicating …
“This, To Me, Was My Town”: How Segregation Shaped Huntington, West Virginia’S Black Community, Jillian Alexis Kendall
“This, To Me, Was My Town”: How Segregation Shaped Huntington, West Virginia’S Black Community, Jillian Alexis Kendall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using Huntington, West Virginia as a case study to examine Black urban-Appalachian communities, this thesis analyzes Huntington’s Black “city within a city” from 1934–1961, exploring how city-sanctioned segregationist practices shaped the community. In 1929, The Herald Dispatch asserted that Black Huntingtonians were able to thrive due to racial harmony facilitated by the “tolerant” attitudes of white Huntingtonians. However, closer inspection reveals that the city’s Black population survived in spite of persistent racial intolerance from white citizens, as well as city, state, and federal authorities. Though Huntington was not technically segregated by de jure means, it is apparent that the city …
White Lies Of Time: Temporal Racialization In 19th-20th Century American Literature, Yu Uchida
White Lies Of Time: Temporal Racialization In 19th-20th Century American Literature, Yu Uchida
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By examining mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century American literary texts, this dissertation project aims to theorize the ways in which whiteness relies on conceptualizations of time to hegemonize non-white subjects and prescribe their historical representations. Because whiteness is dynamic in its emergence and effects and ubiquitous in sociopolitical and cultural realms, this dissertation holistically turns to white, Black, and Indigenous writers to delineate how whiteness functions throughout the period and how racialized subjects negotiate it. Portraying the nation’s history as lived experience rather than objectified knowledge, the racialized authors I examine undermine the concept of linear progressive time that subtends structural …
Community Resilience Drives Change, Andrew Thomas Solt
Community Resilience Drives Change, Andrew Thomas Solt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The opioid crisis has impacted many Americans. From 1999 to 2023, approximately 800,000 people have died due to opioid overdose (CDC, 2025). What began as overprescriptions of painkillers has quickly evolved into a complex social health issue that is now further worsened by stronger synthetic drugs like fentanyl. Fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (synthetic opioids that are very similar chemically to fentanyl) are often found in illegal drug supplies and in counterfeit pills (CDC, 2025). Thus, individuals who might have been initially overprescribed painkillers might now be pushed towards illegally produced drugs that are significantly more potent than what they were …
Graded Repertoire For Violin By Latin American Composers: Pedagogical Analysis And Categorization Of Selected Pieces, Irene Guerra Rudas
Graded Repertoire For Violin By Latin American Composers: Pedagogical Analysis And Categorization Of Selected Pieces, Irene Guerra Rudas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Repertoire sequences have evolved from a collection of technical studies into a comprehensive educational framework. This research aims to enhance the integration of innovative pedagogical materials by identifying, analyzing, and categorizing works originally composed for violin by Latin American composers. These works are assessed for their suitability within a structured violin curriculum and organized into graded levels, ranging from elementary to advanced.
Each selected piece is evaluated according to pedagogical parameters commonly used in established violin teaching traditions. These parameters include pitch range, rhythmic complexity, bow strokes, length, stylistic diversity, musical language, and the historical and cultural relevance of both …
