Design has permeated several areas of public service and administration as a driver for transformational change. For design to live up to its potential, laying the groundwork and creating the preconditions for successful collaboration is essential. This paper reports preliminary insights from an ongoing design- driven development project involving 13 pilot municipalities as well as more than 20 connected public, third sector and special interest organisations. The aim of this work is to address the following questions: What are the challenges faced by public sector organisations in facilitating a national multi- level design driven project for public service transformation? How …
Beyond Prefixes And Suffixes: A Systematic Literature Review Of Doctoral Education In Art And Design, Luke Feast
Beyond Prefixes And Suffixes: A Systematic Literature Review Of Doctoral Education In Art And Design, Luke Feast
IASDR Conference Series
This systematic review examines the literature on doctoral education in art and design. We analysed 1,086 publications to categorise different approaches to art and design doctorates. Our analysis reveals three distinct doctoral types aligned with different educational aims: knowledge development doctorates emphasising systematic research and theoretical contribution; social utility doctorates focusing on professional practice and practical application; and individual development doctorates prior it ising artistic self-discovery and creative expression. The apparent confusion in the field, reflected in debates about terminology such as "research through practice" versus "practice-based research," stems from fundamental disagreements about educational purposes rather than mere semantic differences. …
Co-Designing Adaptive Camera Aid: A Collaborative Making Approach, Desiree Riny, Rowan Page, Leah Heiss
Co-Designing Adaptive Camera Aid: A Collaborative Making Approach, Desiree Riny, Rowan Page, Leah Heiss
IASDR Conference Series
Co-design plays a critical role in the development of Assistive Technology (AT), enabling collaboration, iterative refinement, and user-centred solutions that adapt to the evolving needs of individuals with disabilities. While existing research highlights the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration in co-design, this study explores how industrial designers could work directly with individuals with disabilities outside traditional clinical hierarchies to adapt off-the-shelf devices for leisure therapies. Leisure therapies often involve assistive needs less critical than those of medical devices, providing an opportunity for users to actively articulate their solutions. This case study details the application of co-design methods, integrated with making, to …

Institutional Design In Practice: Strategies And Insights From The Design Movement For Public, Li-Fang Chen, Yu-Ting Yang, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how institutional design can embed design thinking into public governance through the Taiwan’s Design Movement for Public in Taiwan. Initiated in 2023, the initiative integrates a two- stage open call mechanism, a multi-stakeholder co-creation platform, and design-oriented workflows that enable government agencies to reframe challenges, engage interdisciplinary teams, and implement context-specific spatial interventions. Drawing on preliminary field insights from transformation cases across Taiwan, the study explores how small-scale public works can serve as testbeds for policy translation, inter-agency collaboration, and procedural innovation. The findings suggest that by shifting design upstream—from downstream execution to early-stage problem definition—governments can …

The Role Of Design In The Prosthetic Journey: Insights From A Multi-Stakeholder Focus Group, Icaro Ibanez-Arricivita, Alethea L. Blackler, Maria A. Woodruff, Levi Swann, Abigail Winter
IASDR Conference Series
Lower-limb prosthetics are typically developed within clinical frameworks that prioritise function, mobility, and rehabilitation. Yet for many amputees, the prosthesis is not merely a technical aid; it is a symbolic artefact that intersects with identity, visibility, and emotional recovery. This paper maps the dual prosthetic journey, comprising a clinical path of surgery, fitting, and gait training, alongside a symbolic path of shock, adaptation, and self-expression, to show how movement and meaning evolve in parallel. Drawing from two multi-stakeholder focus groups involving clinicians, prosthetists, amputees, advocates, and designers, the study identifies four leverage points where design can bridge functional and emotional …
The Emergence Of Cultural Signals In Typographic Systems, César Arturo Puertas, Juan Alfonso De La Ros
The Emergence Of Cultural Signals In Typographic Systems, César Arturo Puertas, Juan Alfonso De La Ros
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how through visual analysis of contemporary design of typographic systems in Colombia, it is possible to create a custom framework for clustering and analysis to help recognize the possible emergence of cultural signals of colonised communities and cultural groups. Based on that framework we described these signals in four categories: Abstracted indigenous heritage (cultural revival); hybrid graphic vernacular (vernacular typography); Indigenous linguistic forms (direct linguistic revival); and hybrid cultural abstraction (indirect linguistic revival). We argue that local/regional type design and typography are increasingly serving as a medium of cultural resistance (intentional or unintentional), where designers engage with …

This study used co-creation to integrate existing sustainable design strategies into the product development process of a large manufacturer, Stanley Black & Decker. The co-creation process involved understanding the existing product development workflow; finding what sustainable design methods, mindsets, activities, and tools were valued by the company team; integrating them into the existing workflow; using life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify resulting benefits; and revisiting one year later to check for retention of the co-created workflow. The business unit participating in co-creation had retained the new workflow, with the first resulting product showing over 90% reduction in CO₂ impacts, saving …
Hauntological Speculation Device: Designing Lost Futures With Design Students And Generative Ai To Explore Alternative Socio-Technological Scenarios, Pedro Álvarez, José Tomás Labbé
Hauntological Speculation Device: Designing Lost Futures With Design Students And Generative Ai To Explore Alternative Socio-Technological Scenarios, Pedro Álvarez, José Tomás Labbé
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores haunt ological speculation as an innovative approach to Speculative Design in undergraduate design education. While Speculative Design methodologies have gained prominence in design curricula, they often struggle to imagine future scenarios beyond apocalyptic narratives, leading to a form of "imaginative paralysis." To address this challenge, we integrate "hauntology" into Design epi stem ologies. Hauntology expands ontological frameworks by incorporating "the presence of absences"—events that could have occurred but did not materialize—as factors shaping the present, thereby broadening possibilities for imagining and designing futures beyond dominant contemporary logics. We present two case studies of "haunt ological speculation exercises" …
Designing A Distractor As A Reset Mechanism In Virtual Reality: Exploring User Awareness In Redirected Walking, I Nyoman Natanael, Chien-Hsu Chen, Wei-Ting Lu
Designing A Distractor As A Reset Mechanism In Virtual Reality: Exploring User Awareness In Redirected Walking, I Nyoman Natanael, Chien-Hsu Chen, Wei-Ting Lu
IASDR Conference Series
The Redirected Walking (RDW) technique manipulates users' spatial perception, allowing them to walk within a Virtual Environment (VE) larger than the available physical tracking space. The principle of the RDW technique is to manipulate the rotation, translation, and curvature gain ratios on the VE so that users perceive walking straight in the VE even while following a curved path in the physical space. A reset mechanism is needed when the user reaches the edge of the tracking space area to continue walking in the Physical Environment (PE) area without hitting a wall or exiting the tracking space area. A reset …

IASDR Conference Series
As industrial robotics increasingly enters creative and design domains, there is a growing need for educational platforms that support training in industrial robot control, planning, and system configuration. Existing training systems often assume that learners have knowledge of code-based robotics programming, which limits accessibility to creative practitioners. This paper presents the Augmented Reality-based Interactive Robotic Training Platform (AR-IRTP), which reinterprets core industrial robotics concepts, such as tool selection, workspace setup and motion planning, through embodied AR interaction. The platform is based on the Robotic Induction course from the DMaF Robotic Lab and structured using the Human-Robot Leader-Follower (HRLF) model to …
Reactivating The Unseen And Unheard: Posthuman Playfulness As Cultural Agency In Urban Ecologies, Yuying Jiang
Reactivating The Unseen And Unheard: Posthuman Playfulness As Cultural Agency In Urban Ecologies, Yuying Jiang
IASDR Conference Series
With the development of More-than-Human-Centered Design theory, culture has gradually been recognized as an active non-human agent in urban public spaces, attracting increasing attention in the field of design research. However, in the actual planning and operation of urban spaces, posthuman cultural elements—such as cultural memory, historical narratives, and aesthetic experience—are often marginalized. Consequently, the functions of space have become increasingly shaped by mainstream social norms and efficiency-oriented logic, further reinforcing rigid divisions between age, behavior, and use. For example, in urban playgrounds, adults are often excluded and deprived of the right to emotional expression and cultural participation in public …
Scaffolding Metacognition In Design With Generative Ai, Peter Dalsgaard
Scaffolding Metacognition In Design With Generative Ai, Peter Dalsgaard
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores the potentials and pitfalls of Generative AI as a tool for thought in design, emphasizing its ability to scaffold meta cognition, i.e. the ability to reflect on, monitor, and regulate one's own thinking. While GenAI tools streamline creative tasks, they also risk encouraging passive use, over-reliance, and shallow engagement. The core challenge is to design these systems in ways that strengthen, rather than weaken, users’ reflective capacities. Drawing on research in meta cognition and cognitive scaffolding, as well as principles from design thinking that emphasize iterative sensemaking and reflective practice, the paper outlines strategies that foster active …

Airing Data Through Materiality: A Situated Design Approach To Data Physicalization, Annemarie Piscaer, Kristof Vrancken, Sandy Claes, Michel Van Dartel, Michel Van Dartel
IASDR Conference Series
Air pollution is both largely invisible and extensively monitored, making it a data-intensive issue that presents significant challenges for public engagement. Its abstract and often intangible nature makes it difficult for people to relate to or understand. Designers can play a role by transforming abstract (air pollution) data into tangible, context-sensitive artifacts—a practice known as data physicalization. This paper introduces “airing” as a design approach to situated data physicalization. Rather than relying on detached design approaches, airing argues for situated, real-world engagement with data. Airing data through materiality highlights the active role of materials in embedding data within the physical …

Bridging The Expectation–Reality Gap: A Systematic Design Approach To Facilitate Controllability In Human–Virtual Human Interaction, Lanxi Xiao, Qiong Wu, Yuhan Xie, Mengyu Chen, Zipeng Zhang, Xinyi Guo, Yuxin Zhu, Yating Li, Yan Dong
IASDR Conference Series
Virtual humans (VHs) are human-like intelligent agents increasingly used in human–artificial intelligence (AI) collaborative contexts, where control lability is essential for fostering user trust and ensuring a human-centered experience. Although widely adopted, VHs products are often reported to suffer from poor control lability due to the gap between the limited capabilities of narrow AI and users’ high expectations shaped by their anthropomorphic appearance. However, existing control lability theories focus primarily on action-level mechanisms such as undoing and redoing, providing limited support for users’ perceptual and cognitive understanding of interacting with and controlling AI-infused products. To bridge the expectation-reality gap, this …
Enhancing Storyboard Production With Generative Ai: A Case Study On Public Sector Digital Transformation, Eiji Kano
IASDR Conference Series
Storyboard creation is a powerful tool in design practice for fostering shared understanding among stakeholders. In Japan’s public sector, the use of storyboards has expanded in digital transformation (DX) initiatives to visualize complex reform processes. However, the creation of storyboards—especially scenario construction—requires cognitive effort and skills often lacking in non-designer contexts such as government. This paper introduces a methodology for enhancing the productivity of storyboard scenario creation using generative AI. Implemented within “Gov-Toolbox,” a co-creative initiative between a public research institute and a university, the methodology employs large language models to automatically generate coherent four-panel storyboard scripts from case study …

Insights On Visibility For Social Interaction In Neighbourhood Elderly Centre: Cross-Examining Co-Design Outcomes With Visibility Graph Analysis, Yucheng Wu, Pin Aqua Lyu, Chien-Hui Aria Yang
IASDR Conference Series
Growing evidence shows that visibility can influence social interaction in elderly care facilities, yet its design is rarely discussed in statutory requirements. There is a need to engage older adults in the design process, but co-design outcomes often lack quantitative validation. This paper explores the relationship between visibility and social interaction by applying Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA) to quantitatively evaluate co-design outcomes from workshops with older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Method: 12 participants (older adults with MCI, staff, and volunteers) were recruited from a Neighbourhood Elderly Centre (NEC) in Hong Kong for co-design workshops. The co-design outcomes were …

Speculating The Past: Recovering Ford-Nucleon Through Counterfactual Archives To Open The Possibilities Of Nuclear Energy, Zhen Tang, Daijiro Mizuno
IASDR Conference Series
Speculative design has long focused on exploring possible scenarios from the present, while the past has often been overlooked due to its implicit equivalence with known history. This study allows speculative design to engage with the past, taking the unrealized thing as the pivot for counter factual speculation. The research invited the public to recover the Ford Nucleon through counter factual history and create alternative nuclear archives. The goal is to extend the hidden possibilities in nuclear history and stimulate public discourse around nuclear possibilities. The findings show that grounding speculation in real historical events is identified as a key …
The Ought-Is Problem: A Foundational Theory For Diagnosing The Ai-Driven Crisis In Design Education, Franklyn Mosher
The Ought-Is Problem: A Foundational Theory For Diagnosing The Ai-Driven Crisis In Design Education, Franklyn Mosher
IASDR Conference Series
The rapid proliferation of generative AI has precipitated a foundational crisis in design education, challenging long-standing pedagogical models and the very definition of authentic student work. While its symptoms are widely recognized, the design field lacks a formal theory for diagnosing this and other systemic failures. This paper introduces and formalizes the "Ought-Is Problem" as a foundational theory for design critique, defining it as the consequential gap between a designer's idealized model of a system and its users ("Ought") and the observable, complex reality of human behavior ("Is"). We argue that this cognitive dissonance is the root cause of many …
Making A Case For Handmade Observational Mark-Making In Service Design Insight Phases, Eirin Mari Fossøy
Making A Case For Handmade Observational Mark-Making In Service Design Insight Phases, Eirin Mari Fossøy
IASDR Conference Series
Using a particular tool can give rise to processes or knowledge about the world that differ from those generated by other tools. In other words, humans use tools and technologies to shape the world, but these tools, in turn, shape us back - our minds, skills, and the way they extend our bodies. Service design, among many other fields, is significantly impacted by digital transformation, where digital tools are frequently used to create visualizations and representations. An important part of a service designer’s profession is understanding new fields and actors, which often involves aspects that are complex, messy, and emotional. …

Designing Psychological Transformation: Qualitative Insights From Immersive Coffee Tasting, Yen-Tzu Huang, Ding-Hau Huang
IASDR Conference Series
This study explores how an immersive coffee tasting experience, integrating sensory design and mindfulness guidance can evoke participants’ psychological transformation and embodied engagement. Thematic analysis identified five interconnected stages: sensory unfolding, immersive perception, mindfulness experience, internal transformation, and behavioral intention. Findings indicate that participants initially heightened their awareness of sensory details—such as the materiality of cups, ambient sounds, and aromas—then entered a state of focused immersion, experiencing emotional resonance and self-reflection through mindfulness. This led to a reinterpretation of meanings and renewed connectedness with the material and social environment. The proposed “Psychological Transformation Model of Immersive Sensory Experience” illustrates the …

Plp-Exhibits: A Human-Centered Adaptive Design Space Based On Geometric Primitives In Mr, Ziyun Tang, Zehong Ouyang, Bingyi Yang, Xukun Shen
IASDR Conference Series
With the introduction of the concept of Pervasive Augmented Reality (PAR), the integration of virtual content with the real world is gradually transitioning from simple image overlay to dynamic, omnipresent, and continuous interactive experiences. In this context, we propose the PLP-Exhibits framework, which is based on spatial Geometric Primitives (points, lines, and planes) and constructs a adaptive layout framework. This framework aims to provide a dynamic design space that adapts to both user behavior and spatial environments for user interface design in exhibition settings. By treating shifts in user position as a trigger mechanism for changes in the interface state, …

Against the backdrop of rapid industrialization, urbanization, and shifting consumer preferences, traditional rural handicrafts in China are undergoing a profound crisis of value. Although design interventions and digital integration have brought new opportunities to rural handicrafts, their sustainable revitalization still faces fundamental challenges. This study employs a first-principles analytical approach to deconstruct these challenges into two core dimensions: perceived value (aesthetic, emotional, and utilitarian) and production factors (labor, capital, and technology). Using the feather painting craft of Sheng shi ying Village in Yanqing District, Beijing, as a case study, we conducted an empowerment experiment that integrates Generative Artificial Intelligence (AIGC) …
