Beyond The Meadow: Exploring The Violence And Dynamics Of Power In Watership Down Through Critical Animal Studies And Cinematographic Lens, Marwa Hussein Abdelfattah
Arts and Design
This paper aims to analyze the 2018 Netflix miniseries adaptation of Richard Adams's classic novel, Watership Down, using Critical Animal Studies and a Cinematographic lens. The analysis focuses on its visual storytelling through the camera angles, lighting, and character representation. Adams’ novel was adapted three times. The first two animated versions were horrifying to the extent that one of them was banned. The most recent version used Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) technology to be more friendly. The CGI version toned down explicit brutality while maintaining the novel's darker themes. Unlike the two previous versions, the CGI focused on inferred violence and …
Thinning The Jungle Of “Unconceived Alternatives.” Stanford's Antirealism Meets Expected Unifications And Avoidable Inconsistencies, Ioan Muntean
Philosophy Faculty Publications
K. Stanford (2006, 2009) has offered an antirealist argument (the “problem of unconceived alternatives”, PUA) based on the argument that scientists are not able to grasp alternatives to a current scientific theory T. According to PUA, the mere existence of some epistemically inaccessible alternatives (T’, T”, …) weakens our trust in T and shakes the foundations of mainstream scientific realism. The realist may entertain the inkling that inter-theoretical relations (both existing and expected or ‘hoped-for’) play a role in accepting or rejecting PUA. The most celebrated intertheoretical relations, such as consilience, reduction, realization, emergence, equivalence, or approximation—whether prospective, expected, or …

"Beyond Was Blossom And Death": Speculative Futurities, Anne Suh-Yun Rhee
Comparative Literature Undergraduate Senior Theses
This thesis offers a comparative analysis of Toni Morrison’s Paradise and K-Ming Chang’s Bestiary, exploring the relationship between the utopic impulse in art and the field of speculative fiction. I coin and propose the usage of the term “speculative gesture” as a conceptual tool to identify tactics, motifs, and impulses running throughout these two texts that gesture towards the potentialities for constructing alternative futurities. In Chapters 1 and 2, I identify speculative gestures in Paradise and Bestiary, respectively. In Chapter 3, I delve into a comparative analysis of six speculative gestures from these two novels. Building on the …

Tellings Of The Pacific Ocean: A Landscape-Based Approach For Multispecies Design And Hci, Maliheh Ghajargar
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Environmental disturbances induced by climate change have caused significant changes in our ecosystems and are threatening the health of our environments. As a response to this issue, a growing body of work has emerged in HCI and design, which seeks to foreground more-than-human stories in support of making more sustainable and just futures. This research contributes to this broad agenda by probing graphic novels as a multispecies storytelling method for design and HCI. Combining ideas from Anna Tsing’s adventures of landscape and from HCI and design’s use of sequential art (e.g., storyboards), we use landscape as the main protagonist of …

Between Word And World: Textual Space In Modern Sephardic Literature, Inci Cetin
Between Word And World: Textual Space In Modern Sephardic Literature, Inci Cetin
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
In the context of modern Sephardic literature, this paper defines “textual space” as the narrative’s self-conscious arrangement of its own textual elements such as time, space, and language to negotiate a position vis-à-vis the nation-state that is neither fully subsumed within nor completely outside of it. Textual spaces neither conform to the nation state’s borders even though they write from it, nor to nationalist temporalities as they continue a narrative thread that reaches back to 15th-century Spain. Through Myriam Moscona’s Tela de sevoya (2012) and Mario Levi’s Istanbul Was a Fairytale (1999), this paper investigates how textual spaces are deliberately …

Death To Comphet: A Chapina Southern Lesbian Story, Doraly Oneida Perez-Valdez
University Honors Theses
This paper is a counterstory that fights narratives that have been placed upon Latina Lesbians by everyone but us. The main topic is compulsory heteronormativity also known as "comphet". This autoethnography explains how "comphet" may affect different identities but specifically a Latina Lesbian from the South. There are nine chapters that explain how each topic affects a different aspect of identity but centers lesbianism. Societal reasons, cultural reasons, "date to marry" culture, Southern upbringing, sex education received, racial and gender stereotypes, and capitalism are all of the topics being explored through the lens of a Southern Latina Lesbian. These topics …
Love And Rutabaga, Claire Hsu Accomando
Love And Rutabaga, Claire Hsu Accomando
Trade & Scholarly Monographs
In Love and Rutabaga, Claire Hsu Accomando reflects on her formative years growing up in war-torn France. Born in 1937 to a French mother and Chinese father, Accomando was just a child when her father departed for China on diplomatic duty in 1941. Left behind, she and her younger brothers were raised by their mother and grandparents in the small village of Rahon during the German occupation.
Despite the fear and uncertainty of World War II, Accomando paints a surprisingly joyful and richly textured portrait of those years. Her grandparents' home became a sanctuary - not just for their …
Violent Tenderness, Aimilia Amalia Matthildi Tsopela
Violent Tenderness, Aimilia Amalia Matthildi Tsopela
Comparative Literature Undergraduate Senior Theses
This thesis concerns itself with a single question: “What is love?” Specifically, it constitutes an account of love as a failed failure. The first chapter proposes a conceptualization of love as a subject-to-subject relation, through sustained engagement with the work of Alain Badiou. Specifically, the nature of the love relation as an intersubjective construction is articulated through a critique and reworking of Badiou’s conceptualization of love as an evental phenomenon. The second chapter explores the failed failure of love in relation to language, wherein the lovers’ discourse is understood to be linguistic play, operating according to the principles of Bataillean …

Economy Of Motion, Yatin Srinivash Ramesh Babu
be Still
This poem reflects the elegance and necessity of precision in medicine, particularly surgery, where "economy of motion" can mean the difference between life and death. Inspired by observing the intentionality of a surgeon's hands, I aimed to capture the poetry in their discipline—an artistry rooted in restraint.

The purpose of this paper is to produce an analytical reflection on what an unequal society arouses from the point of view of those who suffer from it. First, by distinguishing individuals who are resigned, themselves, considering inequalities as a kind of fatality, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Second, by trying to understand the mechanisms of this reaction through indignation, which is one of the standards for measuring social justice and the beginning of an awareness of the ruse of inequalities management to reject individuals « without qualities »

In the FLE classroom, the properties of each textual typology are constantly discussed separately. However, it seems to us that the vast majority of learners apparently question the usefulness of all this in their experience. This observation is made in the light of the feedback loop. Since we are convinced that an effective teacher is one who regularly subjects his or her pedagogical actions to reflection, our contribution to the proceedings of this international symposium is intended as a contribution to the various strategies to be adopted with a view to shaping a methodical learner. We will show that the …

This article is intended to be an account of our scientific project, a project carried out by crossing disciplinary boundaries, going through several stages in order to achieve more decompartmentalized research, to adopt a multidisciplinary approach of stylistic, genetic and computer science. In order to approach the complex question of style in Flaubert, the one which represents the sovereign image of the writer par excellence, we followed in an initial phase a philological study, resembling the "study of genesis" in vogue at the turn of the century of the 19th and 20th centuries. After this work carried out on the …

The interaction between literature and linguistics must be thought of as permanent round trips: on the one hand linguistics can be useful for the study of literary texts; on the other hand, literature is itself likely to give a subject, a very rich field of investigation to linguistics. We will focus on analyzing some theories of linguistic enunciation applied to the Misguidances of the heart and mind of Crébillonfils, a memoir-novel published in 1736. Our goal was only to highlight the literarity or the poetics of the Crebillonian text through certain constants of the speech act common to the characters …

Literacy, which according to Jaffré (2004:31) designates “the set of human activities which involve the use of writing, in reception and production”, finds its origins in the various research studies relating to anthropology social in Anglo-Saxon countries (cf. Goody, 1979). She is particularly interested in scriptural practices in research writings taking into account their contextual and socio-cultural dimensions. It can be considered both as a term, as a multidisciplinary field, or even as an approach, which is interested in the multiplicity of discourses emanating from teachers and students and which can be written or oral.
Our purpose in this contribution …

The dedramatization of public speaking often remains at the center of requests for training in “expression”. Breaking the silence often represents an act of great violence for the student. Who is the player ? who is the played ? For around fifteen years, to understand the micro-rituals, the unspoken gestures of daily life, teaching throught theatre or role-playing has been provided in our schools and universities.
Why the choice of dramatic play? Theater presents this rare particularity of designating in a clear and visible way the two inseparable instances of all cultural practice: the actor and the spectator. If many …

In France, primary school teachers are considered "generalist teachers" capable of expertly teaching all subjects. This ambitious vision of the "ideal teacher," defined by the 2013 French professional competency framework, can lead to professional distress, particularly in foreign language teaching where many primary school teachers feel inadequate.
To improve the well-being of future primary school teachers during language lessons, an innovative teacher training based on children's literature was tested with first-year Master's students in education. The study began with a questionnaire assessing their self-perceived English level and emotions towards teaching it, revealing linguistic insecurity and negative feelings such as anxiety …

The words of the other abound in Milan Kundera's novels. In what forms is this discursive otherness textualized ? What is its massive and quasi-systematic use for ? These two questions are at the heart of this article devoted to the study of reported speech in Kunderian fiction. The hypothesis that we would like to support here is that this novelistic scenography of reported speech responds to a polyphonic project conducive to the interaction of voices and points of view, with a view to revealing the world.

This research is framed within the analysis of "teacher action" (Cicurel, 2013). It investigates the perspectives of educational in spectors regarding the didactic discourse of French as a foreign language teachers in the secondary vocational cycle within the Moroccan context. The objective is to gather and analyze the inspectorate's views on the concept of "enunciative shift" (Cicurel, 1996), which is defined as the transition from a relatively objective stance in didactic communication to an enunciative position that emphasizes the teacher's subjectivity during interactions with students. The 2023-2024 school year is unlike any other in terms of Moroccan language policy. The Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports has issued a circular calling on its various officials, players and stakeholders to generalize the use of the English language from secondary school level upwards. This new configuration, whose ultimate aim is to establish “linguistic pluralism in a progressive and balanced way”, starts with a sample of 10%, but intends to reach 100% in all public colleges by the 2025-2026 season. So what are the reasons for this choice? What does it say about the linguistic situation in …

In the digital age, new literary forms are emerging within the post-modernist novel, particularly in french. The latter, whose aesthetic and formal construction, increasingly draws on media or artistic motifs that orient literary writing towards new aesthetic and discursive practices that break with structuralist formalism, most often based on the classic narrative schema of Julien Greimas or the actantial schema of Vladimir Propp. Thus, we are talking today about the interdisciplinary or polydisciplinary, hydrid or transcultural text, wich integrates paraliterary motifs such as the media with the aim of creating a new “vision of the world” based on exchange and …

In the digital age, people connect and build their identities on online platforms. Social networks, blogs and virtual spaces provide places of expression for social identity. This new way of socializing online raises questions about the influence of digital media on identity formation. Indeed, many influencers use vlogs for personal expression, storytelling and social connection. The proliferation of vlogs in areas such as fashion, cooking, and more demonstrates a significant shift in our consumption of content online. In this regard, several influencers have chosen to transmit Moroccan identity through vlogs of Moroccan culinary content, by wearing traditional outfits and creating …
