This paper examines copyright restoration as both a legal mechanism and a form of cultural reparations for Black musicians historically excluded from ownership and profit in the American music industry. It traces the evolution of U.S. copyright law from its earliest forms to the Music Modernization Act of 2018, highlighting how shifting statutory frameworks have gradually extended protection and restoration rights to artists who were once denied them. In the contemporary period, high visual coverage of activism has contributed to frustrations over the apparent decrease in change despite perceptions of increased participation. Young activists in the classroom ask questions to learn from their predecessors. Sex, femininity, and dirt in James Joyce’s Ulysses form what Julie Kristeva calls “abjection.” The abject is "the border where exact limits between same and other, subject and object, and even beyond these, between inside and outside, and disappearing—hence an Object of fear and fascination,” (Kristeva 1980, 185) evident by Leopold Bloom’s identity as a cuckold. Alternately approached with loss, disconnection, and anxiety, the text reveals that Leopold Bloom craves his abject to distance himself from physical and emotional rejection. “Calypso” establishes how his abject operates as a defense mechanism to self-defile before others can approach any realized sexual bond. …

This project aims to explore how adaptation reshapes the social architecture of a movie. To do this, I used social network analysis to compare the character dynamics between Infernal Affairs(Hong Kong, 2002) and its U.S. adaptation The Departed(2006) in two ways: co-presence networks (characters connected when they appear in the same scene, with edge weights capturing repeated co-appearance) and directed dialogue network (arrows representing who speaks to whom, with thicker arrows indicating more frequent dialogue). Comparing the network structures across the two films reveals meaningful differences in group structure, connecting roles, and the concentration of dialogue around key characters, which …

This project is a comprehensive analysis of over 93,000 New York City film permits from 2012-2025. A geographic analysis reveals that filming activity is concentrated in a small number of neighborhoods, although slight differences are visible based on the type of media being filmed. This geographic pattern has remained stable over the 13 years studied, despite major disruptions like COVID-19 and the streaming boom. Notably, a joint analysis with a New York City household income dataset shows that these neighborhoods stand as wealthier than the average New York City neighborhood. How does social network analysis behave when focalization shifts rapidly across characters in free indirect discourse? This study employs specific literary analysis with social network analysis as digital humanities methodology to investigate the contrast between the superficial social structures and the interior psychological relationship structures. This research presents a hierarchical cluster analysis and aspect based sentiment analysis (ABSA) of French newspaper articles about the September 11 attacks published on September 12, 2001. The study focuses specifically on the key thematic clusters discussed across these articles and the variance in sentiment scores across them. Using Dendrogram Hierarchical Modeling and ABSA, the model identified six thematic clusters and measured thematic scores for each cluster as well as their key terms on a scale ranging [-1,1]. The analysis revealed simultaneous sympathy for the American people alongside scrutiny of potential American retaliation.

This project uses sentiment analysis technology to examine the screenplays of The Godfather trilogy. Sentiment analysis generates data based on dramatic dialogue, rating each line on a sentiment scale that indicates the level of emotional intensity or neutrality, as well as whether the sentiment is positive or negative. By using this technology, the study identifies the unique curves of each film, allowing for a comparison of narrative peaks and valleys that helps explain the disparity between the series' acclaim and its criticism. Founded in 1972 as the UN’s main environmental authority, the UNEP plays a vital role in global discourse surrounding climate change and environmental challenges. Using Python-based computational methods to track word frequencies, semantic clusters, and grammatical patterns across five decades of annual reports, this analysis reveals three distinct linguistic periods. This paper will highlight two early medical librarians, Mary Louise Marshall (1893-1986) and William D. Postell, Sr (1908-1982) who were in our chapter’s region, although during their careers, SCC did not exist. While we cannot expect that historical figures have the same knowledge and values as our contemporary colleagues, we can evaluate their writings to see what internal biases were present.

Critically reappraising the work of our predecessors can be a difficult task, especially if these individuals were held in high esteem, won national awards and published important papers about medical librarianship. However, as theories are repudiated, re-evaluation is key. …

This article examines the trajectory of Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso as both performer and restager of Giselle. After offering a historical overview of Romantic ballet in nineteenth-century Cuba, the study traces Alonso’s transformation into one of the most acclaimed figures in the performance history of Giselle. The text considers her interpretation of the eponymous role in the United States, Cuba and beyond, beginning with her 1943 debut as Giselle with Ballet Theatre in New York, and highlights the interplay between her performances and stagings of the piece. The changing landscape of Shoah memory in Serbia has largely gone unexamined. Using the Staro Sajmište concentration camp site and its in situ memorial as a focal point, this paper examines how Holocaust remembrance in Serbia has shifted across historical periods, often marked by erasure, marginalization, and historical revisionism. Official narratives frequently redirected attention away from the Jewish victims murdered at Staro Sajmište toward emphasizing Serbian suffering, particularly at the Ustaše-operated Jasenovac camp. Political pressures and the strategic use and placement of commemorative plaques facilitated this narrative shift. While much of the existing scholarship on the 1980 Moscow Olympics focuses on Jimmy Carter’s infamous boycott, a closer examination from the Soviet perspective reveals a distinctive moment in Cold War history. Set against escalating global tensions following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Kremlin capitalized on the Games to project strength, unity, and international legitimacy. Although the Western boycott affected the Games, it created an opportunity for the USSR to showcase socialist athletic excellence and strengthen diplomatic ties with Non-Aligned nations, many of which resisted U.S. pressure to abstain. Volkmann’s music remains largely unknown and unperformed, waiting to be rediscovered. This lack of recognition provides a compelling opportunity to appreciate a talented composer and rekindle interest in his music. This study investigates parental attitudes and expectations regarding piano study for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although music has been recognized for its therapeutic and educational benefits among individuals with ASD, research examining these outcomes from the perspective of parents has been limited. This study focuses on in-depth interviews with nine parents of children with ASD enrolled in the Carolina LifeSong Initiative, a specialized piano program serving students with diverse developmental disorders.

The interviews explored parents’ motivations for initiating piano study, expectations for both musical and non-musical outcomes, and observations of their children’s growth and challenges through music. Parents reported …

The purpose of this study was to examine the stress and anxiety levels among undergraduate music majors at the University of South Carolina (USC) and identify potential stressors that might be unique or more prevalent among that specific population. To evaluate this, a questionnaire consisting of 42 questions was administered to participants. Most of the questions were carefully developed by the researcher; however, the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen et al, 1983) was used to examine participants' stress levels, and 13 selected questions from the Burns Anxiety Inventory (Burns, 1989) were used to examine their anxiety levels.
