This thesis examines the lives and cultural roots of the Five Moons - five Native American ballerinas - and how their example may serve as an ancestorial inspiration for the next generation of dancing youth. Exploring the impact of their tribal heritage on them as dancers, and how the prominence of their professional careers can be connected to the concept of ancestors in Native American culture, is central to this work. Western perceptions of intelligence in correlation with Cartesian Mind/Body Dualism can have a detrimental impact on the way students receive and are affected by information. In collegiate settings where students participate in Western concert dance technique classrooms and dance academic courses, a student’s reputation for excelling in one area or another can influence the teacher’s perception of the student’s abilities. This can cause instructors to presume a generalized understanding of what a student is capable of and encourage an unbalanced engagement with the student’s abilities within one type of classroom versus another. This research examines the violent misogyny and contempt for the female body in, but not limited to, Western Christian environments using as a lens the life and practices of Catherine Benincasa, a mystic and tertiary Dominican sainted in 1461 as Saint Catherine of Siena. Further, the research looks at the use of the abject and grotesque in performance, as well as transformative storytelling, as a means of making lived experience visible, and is explored as a liberatory response to such systems of domination and violence. \the ‘I’ in Invisible\ is a work of autoethnography that looks at the Black male body as a moved site of analysis to illuminate the performance of Black masculinity in Western concert dance as a means towards social survival by highlighting perceptions and tropes of Black, male bodies in motion. This thesis reflects upon grind culture's effect on the millennial generation, beginning with an examination of the origins of our modern-day grind culture and how it continues to encourage us to overwork ourselves to burnout. By investigating late-stage capitalism's influence on my life and my emotional capabilities as a dancer and a parent, I aim to chart an alternative path forward. This thesis chronicles this moment in time as I challenge myself to find a new way to exist in resistance to the grind with embodiment and rest practices not only for my own life but my family as well.

The performative nature of concert dance requires a profound awareness and understanding of the body and the mind. Formal dance training situates an environment where the investigation of the body is crucial, often leaving the responsibility of internal inquiry to the dancer. In my experience as a Black, Queer, and Trans/Non-Binary person assigned male at birth, this investigation has been incredibly difficult. This research explores not only the sub-cultural context that influenced my resistance to emotional maturity but also the places that shaped my connection to vulnerability and how I’ve been able to access it. The life and work of many nineteenth-century women composers cannot be satisfactorily studied or understood due to a lack of documentary evidence. In the case of Alma Mahler, however, it is not a lack of manuscript materials or biographical accounts that preclude the appraisal of her legacy, but rather the sheer volume and often contradictory nature of accounts. Although her early life writing emphasized the importance of music, she later downplayed her identity as a composer and emphasized her role of patron of the arts and muse to “great men.” I would argue, however, that if biography is a tool …

From 1861-1865, the previously United States was torn apart by the Civil War. While many Southern states succeeded and joined the Confederate cause, five slave-holding states remained part of the Union. Women across the nation found their lives upended by the conflict, but those living in border states faced particular strife as neighbors turned against each other because of political ideology. Soldiers of both armies invaded towns in border states and used their positions to steal and take advantage of the women residing there. However, these women remained strong, demonstrating their enduring morale. This paper examines personal correspondence from women …

In Defense Of The “Peculiar Institution”: The Influence Of European Scientific Racism On The Confederacy, Guillem Colom

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Through the antebellum period and American Civil War, American and European race theorists exchanged ideas through correspondence and scientific explorations asserting the truth of scientific racism. Scientific racist beliefs posited the natural superiority of white people and inferiority of Black people based on what these theorists claimed were innate biological characteristics, and these beliefs served as a critical linkage between Europe and the United States. Utilizing correspondence and journal entries, this paper shows that this exchange of scientific racist ideas significantly influenced the Confederacy’s political thought and policy positions, especially foreign relations, through the Civil War. According to research done by the Williams Institute, of the eight million LGBTQIA+ workers in the United States, nearly half of them have experienced unfair treatment at work at some point in their lives. The research presented was conducted to assess if there is a correlation between discrimination and depression and the impact on sexual and gender minorities’ (SGM) levels of self-compassion. SGMs include, but are not limited to, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, and queer. My thesis centers around Black women’s dating and hookup experiences at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). I distributed a survey with 44 questions; five demographic questions and eight factors that include questions revolving around being romantically and/or sexually rejected based on their race/ethnicity. After three weeks of collecting data, my research has revealed patterns involving negative attitudes towards dating apps, admissions of hopelessness in finding an intimate partner, being fetishized by white people, and feelings of betrayal when/if a person of color expressed rejection based on their race/ethnicity. “Blackjack” Pershing’S Punitive Expedition, Jacob Breezeel

Tenor of Our Times

In 1916, General Pershing led a force of American troops into Mexico in response to a raid on Columbus, New Mexico. While unsuccessful in achieving the primary mission, the expedition produced advancements in military transportation and aviation and provided valuable experiences to the next generation of generals which were central to America's success in World War I.

The Gunpowder Plot has remained, since its failure in November 1605, a topic of fierce debate until the present. While tensions surrounding the nature of its planning, motives, or even its authenticity as a plot organized by Catholics have settled comparably to where they were in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, discussion of the Gunpowder Plot and its legacy continues to pervade when talking of James I’s reign.
