Enfilade And Variations: Interpreting Salon Music Through Residential Architecture In Eighteenth-Century Paris, Nicole Vilkner

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In eighteenth-century Parisian salons, theme and variations on popular melodies proliferated. Elaine Sisman’s seminal study of variation form provides a foundational approach for understanding variations as rhetorical exercises that persuade through differences in syntax and expression. In this vein, scholars have comprehensively affirmed the ways that salon music reflects the dialogic and sociable practices of Enlightenment receptions (Hanning, Sutcliffe, and Zohn). I suggest that theme and variation form is not only connected to the rhetoric of the salon, but that the concept of sequential elaboration is a principle that was also prized in residential architecture.

This paper reflects on my experience simulating an 18th-century French salon for an academic conference and in an undergraduate classroom. I argue that simulating a salon is heuristically as well as pedagogically useful and allows historians to test hypotheses about the nature of the salon and the role of the salonnière proposed by scholars such as Dena Goodman and Antoine Lilti. The essay also engages with some of the important insights gained from feminist and performance theory regarding historical reenactment. Thus I caution against naive attempts to reenact the past and instead suggest practices that foster open-ended conversations about the …

Unfortunately, leadership studies has some trouble imagining queer leadership, or rather, queer theory and leadership studies. In order to integrate the more abstract aspects of queer theory with the largely evidence-based field of leadership studies, I draw on the texts, history, practices, and theory of queer anarchism. In this paper, we use a feminist dialogue to query publication deaths that haunt us. We ruminate on respective past publications that remain unread and uncited, despite encapsulating defining events in our development as scholars. For Author Kaye Hare this was an affective narrative that troubled a seemingly ideal moment of public scholarship; for Author Amber Moore, this was a hard-fought analysis of precarious intersectional feminist resistance in popular culture. The gender spectrum, a continuum ranging from “male” to “female,” is a huge improvement over the traditional binary model, according to which one can be either one or the other, and no degrees are allowed. However, the model still suffers from some inadequacies, most notably the inability to represent other genders and agender identities. This is accounted for in the new “spectral” models of gender, which use independent scales to measure the degree to which a person identifies with a given gender category. The objective of this research is to study factors related to coffee yields and to develop a model for assessing the productivity of Arabica coffee based on data obtained from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in Ban San Charoen, Tha Wang Pha District, Nan Province, during the 2021-2022 harvest seasons. The researchers used variables which are plant height, canopy size, trunk circumference, and visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI). This article aims to examine the role of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in literature, considering its influence on Victorian writers—particularly in the realist novels of Charles Dickens and George Eliot—and extending to the emergence of evolutionary literary theory in the 20th century. The author applies this theory to analyze John Milton's Sonnet 7. The analysis results demonstrate that Darwinian evolutionary literary theory has strengths in explaining character behavior through the lens of adaptation for survival but is limited by its neglect of historical and cultural contexts.
