Cibo E Comunità, Richard Mcwilliam Dec 2023

Cibo E Comunità, Richard Mcwilliam

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

“This Is The Psychology We Need”: Maya Immigrant Views On Mental Health Treatment, Robin Chancer Dec 2023

“This Is The Psychology We Need”: Maya Immigrant Views On Mental Health Treatment, Robin Chancer

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

This paper engages the theme of psychological-physical-spiritual health among displaced Maya communities. To pursue knowledge about the communities’ visions for thriving in the United States, I worked with Maya leaders in Ohio to coordinate a series of dialogues utilizing a Participatory Action Research paradigm. Participants exposed ways in which Western institutions (including hospitals, mental health providers, and schools) reenact elements of colonialism and fail to offer culturally sensitive care. The participants emphasized a key missing element in their well-being: renewing the relationship with the Earth that they lost through colonization and forced migration. To separate physical/mental health from these elements …

Who Claims This Stone? Searching For Meaning In My Mother’S Greenstone Maya Figurine, Grace Keyes Dec 2023

Who Claims This Stone? Searching For Meaning In My Mother’S Greenstone Maya Figurine, Grace Keyes

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

The ekphrastic poem and the essay presented here revolves around a greenstone figurine that was found in Guatemala about a hundred years ago. I composed the poem as a way to capture the thoughts that passed through my mind as I contemplated this statuette. The figurine was given to me by my mother who had little information about it but believed it was an ancient Maya artifact. Over many years, I often wondered about the hidden secrets such an artifact may hold. During my teaching career, I took the figurine into archaeology classes as a useful teaching tool to help …

Castillos En La Arena. Turismo, Desigualdad Laboral Y Reproducción Cultural En Torno A Tulum-Pueblo, Quintana Roo, Alejandro Martinez

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

La Creación De Una Civilización: Arquitectos, Dibujantes E Ingenieros A Finales Del Siglo Xviii Y Principios Del Siglo Xix En La Provincia De Chiapa, Omar López Espinosa

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Juan José Arévalo 1945 To 1951: Legacies And Lessons For The Current Democracy Movement In Guatemala, Alan Lebaron Dec 2023

Juan José Arévalo 1945 To 1951: Legacies And Lessons For The Current Democracy Movement In Guatemala, Alan Lebaron

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Juan José Arévalo and the “revolutionaries” brought tremendous change to Guatemala. But well before Arévalo left office, the Revolution was already in the crosshairs of US military might. At least three challenges threatened the government of Arévalo: the ultra conservatives or the “anti-revolutionaries”; competitive aspirations of the revolutionaries; and the overarching power of the US businesses and US government. Arévalo encountered these challenges from the first day of his presidency, and thereafter. Bernardo Arévalo, Guatemala’s recently elected president, faces similar dangers: a powerful opposition from an entrenched civilian and military oligarchy, urban and rural disconnections, foreign economic power and influences, …

The Contested Exempla Of Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Victoria Theresa White Dec 2023

The Contested Exempla Of Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Victoria Theresa White

Dissertations and Theses

In 82 BCE, Lucius Cornelius Sulla emerged the victor of his civil war against the supporters of Marius and Cinna. The brutal aftermath of this victory, characterized by the creation of the proscriptions, would brand Sulla as a cruel and immoderate victor. Still, his successes in Rome’s previous wars against foreign enemies had enshrined Sulla as a brilliant military commander within Roman memory. Previous scholarship about Sulla has focused on the dichotomy of Sulla’s actions, often in order to evaluate his clemency or cruelty and his aims of his political reforms. This thesis analyzes how ancient Roman and Greek authors …

Predicting Speaking Proficiency With Fluency Features Using Machine Learning, Ethan D. Erickson Dec 2023

Predicting Speaking Proficiency With Fluency Features Using Machine Learning, Ethan D. Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the interplay between temporal fluency measures, self-assessment, and language proficiency scores in novice- to intermediate- level language learners of Spanish and French. Analyzing data from 163 participants, the research employs both traditional linear regression and advanced XGBoost machine learning models. Findings demonstrate a moderate positive correlation between self-assessment and Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc) scores, underscoring the dependable self-awareness of learners. Notably, XGBoost performs as well as linear regression in predicting OPIc scores and has more potential, underlining the efficacy of advanced methodologies. The study identifies Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) as a crucial predictor, highlighting …

I Banchetti Rinascimentali Come Una Forma Di Relazioni Internazionali, Sofia Gatti Dec 2023

I Banchetti Rinascimentali Come Una Forma Di Relazioni Internazionali, Sofia Gatti

L’Evoluzione Della Bella Figura A Tavola Nell'italia Rinascimentale, Lilian Gallardo Dec 2023

L’Evoluzione Della Bella Figura A Tavola Nell'italia Rinascimentale, Lilian Gallardo

Studi Alimentari Italiani E Geologia: Vino E Vulcani Da Diverse Prospettive, Maria Varriale Gomez Dec 2023

Studi Alimentari Italiani E Geologia: Vino E Vulcani Da Diverse Prospettive, Maria Varriale Gomez

The Role Of Local Agency In Peacebuilding: The Case Of The Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, Gamel M. A. Aganah Phd Dec 2023

The Role Of Local Agency In Peacebuilding: The Case Of The Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, Gamel M. A. Aganah Phd

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article explores the failure of top-level interventions in the resolution of local conflicts and the role of local agency in peacebuilding. The article relied primarily on qualitative techniques and instruments to collect data to examine why top-level interventions by successive governments have failed to resolve the Bawku chieftaincy conflict. The article finds that top-level interventions have failed to resolve the conflict because they are introduced with little to no participation by local communities. These interventions are, therefore, unable to garner grassroot support and commitment. In contrast, the BIEPC led peace process has been more successful in the management of …

The Impact Of Emma: Destroying Stereotypes Through Nuanced Characters In Text And Film, Julia Mccool Dec 2023

The Impact Of Emma: Destroying Stereotypes Through Nuanced Characters In Text And Film, Julia Mccool

English MA Theses

This paper explores Jane Austen’s Emma as a response to stereotypes in 18th century novels and moral tales, and Autumn De Wildes’s Emma. from a feminist lens. Examining both of these works reveals that Emma was originally, and still is over 200 years later, transforming stereotypes in literature and film adaptations. The novel seems to be responding to a common stereotypical female villain found in many 18th century novels. In viewing Emma as a subversion of this stereotype, it is clear that Austen was responding to the sexist notions behind the character type, and writing a heroine more in line …
