This piece looks at queer characters in the Coen Brothers’ film Hail, Caesar! (2016). The film takes place during the heyday of the Hollywood film studio set in 1951 and draws on many films during that time period of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Objective: Unintentional childhood injuries present a substantial public health burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) including Uganda. Interventions to reduce this risk should be responsive to children’s unique developmental, environmental, and sociocultural context. This project had three primary objectives: 1) Analyzing caregiver reports of child injury events in rural Uganda to identify perceived causal and preventative factors; 2) Identifying Ugandan first and sixth graders’ developmental safety needs by comparing hazard recognition and past-year injuries among these students; and 3) Evaluating the impact of the Careful Cubs intervention on Ugandan first graders’ personal safety knowledge, skills, and beliefs. Adolescent substance use is common and may disrupt structural and functional brain development given that adolescence is a period of substantial neural maturation. Neurodevelopmental disruptions may be most pronounced within brain regions that undergo substantial development during adolescence (e.g., prefrontal cortex [PFC]) and regions that are integral to reward networks (e.g., nucleus accumbens [NAcc]). This project used latent growth curve models (LGCM) coupled with neuroimaging techniques to investigate relationships between adolescent substance use and young adult brain structure and functional connectivity. Organisms produce chemical defenses to gain a competitive advantage, and to protect themselves from pathogens and predators. There is high inter- and, sometimes, intraspecific diversity in the types and quantities of defensive secondary metabolites. Yet, we do not know much about the mechanisms driving the diversity and its distribution. Macroalgae are important members of ecosystems since they provide living space and are primary producers. To prevent predation, macroalgae make structural or chemical defenses. Chemical defenses in the Antarctic red macroalga Plocamium sp. have extensively been studied. Characterization Of Exercise-Associated Skeletal Muscle Secreted Factors Through Aging, Dalton Chase Patterson

Exercise is a powerful behavioral intervention against Central Nervous System (CNS) aging1–3 and plays an essential role in maintaining healthy neurocognitive function and immune metabolism in the aging brain3. We have developed a new transgenic mouse model that moderately over-expresses transcription factor master regulator of proteostasis, Transcription Factor E-B (TFEB), in skeletal muscle (cTFEB;HSACre mice). Despite living sedentary lifestyles, our model of enhanced skeletal muscle proteostasis shows significantly ameliorated proteotoxicity, increased BDNF levels and neurogenesis while improving neurocognitive function and decreasing neuroinflammation in the aging CNS4,5. These neuroprotective effects are markedly reminiscent of those observed in the aging CNS post-exercise6,7, …

Individuals in labor unions have better access to lower cost/more substantial health insurance plans, higher quality pension plans, and better wages leading to increased lifetime earnings. Even though many of these benefits create important pathways that could lead to better health, unions have been paid little attention in health literature. Additionally, in the modern workplace Mothers are offered lower starting salaries, are perceived as less competent, and face a penalty regarding hiring, promotion, and workplace educational opportunities. Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating chronic pain condition. Its pathophysiology is largely unknown, which has hindered the development of effective treatments. Central sensitization and neuroinflammation have been forwarded as models of FM pathophysiology, both of which indicate the antitussive drug dextromethorphan (DXM) as a potentially effective treatment. DXM is an N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-receptor antagonist and microglial modulator with anti-neuroinflammatory properties at low doses. It is currently available for clinical use, but has not been tested as a treatment for FM at low dosages. This community has experienced historic neglect, inequities, gentrification, and economic displacement. Through muxersita portraiture, a critical qualitative methodology, with young people as co-researchers, this study captures the collective narrative of the community of North Fair Oaks through platicas, encuentros y acción. Integral peace leadership is an emergent framework that creates space for just change by challenging violence and aggression while building positive systems and structures. This article utilizes a deductive qualitative analysis strategy to critically examine the proposed concepts of integral peace leadership to determine their saliency for peacebuilding practice. Utilized to study these concepts are 10 Women PeaceMakers’ narratives. Results indicate that 25 of the 35 concepts studied across four quadrants were relevant in the women’s peace leadership work, with an additional six concepts revealed. The analysis demonstrates that the concepts of integral peace leadership are present in the work …

Reflections of Rondo is a temporal, visual exploration of the I-94 freeway’s relationship with and implications on the Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul, Minnesota.

As a prominent center of Black community and culture since the 1900s, Rondo had a thriving, working-class population that built families, businesses, and markers of place and identity in a socially segregated city. They had built “a city within a city” that welcomed people of all backgrounds and classes.

Agricultural reform movements proliferated in seventeenth-century Europe. For many who sought to make farming more economically productive, the practices of chymistry offered a way to accomplish these goals. Placed in the context of the development of a “vegetable philosophy,” or a theory of generation and growth across mineralogical and botanical domains, this article examines the application of chymical techniques in the attempt to enhance wheat seeds through seed-steeping and “fructifying” experiments among seventeenth-century agricultural reformers, particularly in England. As the primary ingredient in gunpowder, saltpeter was an extraordinarily important commodity in the early modern world. Historians of science and technology have long studied its military applications but have rarely focused on its uses outside of warfare. Due to its potential effectiveness as a fertilizer, saltpeter was also an integral component of experimental agricultural reform movements in the early modern period and particularly in seventeenth-century England. This became possible for several reasons: the creation of a thriving domestic saltpeter production industry in the second half of the sixteenth century; the development of vitalist alchemical theories that sought a unified …

Rowan et al’s target article makes clear that meaningful change in policy and practice to protect animals has failed to progress in lockstep with scientific understanding of their sentience and needs. The underlying causes for inertia in political and practical progress for animals in the UK context are multi-faceted and complex, including economic forces; lack of cross-departmental accountability for animal welfare; and challenges where it suits conservation scientists to dismiss or downgrade the impacts of management decisions on individual animals. Existing scholarship on dreams in Young Adult (YA) Literature tends to revolve around the analysis and understanding of dreams using a psychanalytic approach. Using theorists like Freud and Jung, scholars analyse dreams to predict the future development of the self. My thesis, however, veers away from such psychoanalytic studies and focus more on the ontological and liminal powers of dreams. Some students at Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) struggle to connect with God and many never develop personal habits of connecting with God or learn how to grow into mature relationships with God.

The Method

I developed twelve devotional habits designed for different personality types. Six of the habits focused on prayer and six on Scripture. I taught six religion classes for three weeks, collecting data from 100 junior and senior PAA students. Most contemporary 3D data used in archaeological research and heritage management have been created through ‘reality capture,’ the recording of the physical features of extant archaeological objects, structures, and landscapes using technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetry (Garstki 2020, ch.2; Magnani et al. 2020). A smaller quantity of data are generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects, and even fewer data are generated through procedural modeling, the rapid prototyping of multi-component threedimensional (3D) models from a set of rules (Figure 8.1.).
