Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (1801-1886) was a German civil servant who collected the folk beliefs of his native Upper Palatinate region in Bavaria, Germany. This project is an original English translation of Schönwerth's primary work, Customs and Legends of the Upper Palatinate (1857-1859), preceded by a summary of the author's life, the reception of his work, and its relevance in the modern day.

To assert that Charles Dickens possessed a mastery of language unique among nineteenth-century novelists for its vernacular inventiveness is hardly controversial. The Oxford Dictionary of English Idioms lists Dickens among its most cited sources (others include the Bible and Shakespeare). Dickens’s use of ordinary, unembellished, and what Anthony Trollope termed vulgarly “ungrammatical” lower-class language sets his novels apart in style and tone from those of his famous peers (249). Increasing instability in higher education funding (Thomas, 2021) has directly impacted the University of Montana music program but has also indirectly changed the role of music students to such an extent that I now often say, “every artist is an advocate.” In 2018, the University of Montana School of Music experienced significant threats from budget cuts, and in the years following, attempts to earn legislative funding for capital development failed. Faced with these budget cuts and other lack of funding, music students had to advocate for themselves and employ community and institutional support to maintain the strength of their program. …

This thesis applies the glocalization theory to a comparative study of the Disney theme parks in the United States and Shanghai, China. It argues that Walt Disney’s glocalization through integrating Chinese culture into the Shanghai Disney theme park brought commercial success to the company. Additionally, it also set up a good example for other businesses interested in global expansion.

Specifically, Brazil and Argentina have proposed different regulations and laws that protect these individuals from violence and that intend to incorporate them into the job market. However, these countries have vastly different policies regarding healthcare for transgenders such as transition medication and surgeries, which will be further identified and explained in the paper.

This chapter explores the development of social provisioning as a matter not of right but of democratic administration in France and the United States in the nineteenth century. The authors take issue with conventional chronologies of rights development, which see civil and political rights being developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with social rights appearing in the twentieth. Such categories and sequencing obscure the ways in which democratic administrations took the problem of social provisioning seriously. The novel Swiss Trash, written by Dunia Miralles in 2000, interrogates stereotypes around immigration and nationhood in contemporary francophone Switzerland, with the intention of turning some notions on their head and letting others fester, uncomfortably. The French-language text underscores the divisions, the startling differences present within a seemingly perfect “Heidiland.” Its English title hints at complex and often equivocal cultural denotations extant within the Helvetic Confederation. A simultaneous reading of Swiss Trash and Heidi, of familiar Swiss citizens and intrusive immigrants, offers, this article contends, revealing visions of a dismal present/future and an idealized past. For over thirty years, we have used a phrase “the Developing Global Crisis” to identify a cluster of recurring causal factors of chaos that are especially difficult to deal with. These are: population pressure (not simply growth), corruptions of governance (hard to study in democracies much less in police-states), authoritarian political systems, and militant religions. A South African native living in the USA explores and examines the essence of The Sum of Us by contemplating three post-Apartheid realizations in context of structural racism in the US: the illusion of being “born free”, the value of the philosophy of Ubuntu (“I am because we are”), and the role of respect in addressing racism. Ideas around shared narratives, reconciliation, mutual understanding, human value and freedom as something to be strived for, are denoted in relation to dismantling systemic racism for the sake of future generations in the US.

McGhee (2021) concludes the introduction to The Sum of Us by declaring that she is “fundamentally a hopeful person, because [she knows] that decisions made the world as it is and that better decisions can change it” (p. xxiii). In this brief response I want to take on two problematic aspects of McGhee’s declaration, her hope and her voluntarism. I use an Afropessimistic lens so that we might, as Frank B. Wilderson III (2020) urges, make some of McGhee’s book “more dangerous to the U.S. and the world” (p. 250).

The failure of American politics to appropriately address the harms of substance use and substance use disorders reflects “a bitter cost of the white majority’s willingness to accept the suffering of others" (McGhee p. 47) and the ways in which that willingness also harms white people is an additional cost we bear.

Heather McGhee’s book presents a deeply ambivalent portrait of Rhetoric as a field of study. Her own optimistic faith in research, evidence, and truth-telling is countered by endless examples of the failure of rational, ethical persuasion in the face of racism and greed. This ambivalence raises existential questions for rhetorical curricula in higher education.
