An Unexpected Case For An Anthropomorphic God, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2022

An Unexpected Case For An Anthropomorphic God, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Given the knowledge of the corporeal, embodied nature of God that the Prophet Joseph Smith received in his 1820 First Vision, Latter-day Saints have argued from their earliest days that the Bible is most accurately understood as teaching precisely the same thing — that God has a body and that humans are literally created in his physical image. Now, a new book from an unlikely (and quite unintentional) ally makes a strong case for our position. It is a book that will both gratify Latter-day Saints and, at some points, offend them. In any event, readers of Interpreter should be …

Elements Of Successful Writing Assignment Design In Literature Courses, Sean Patterson

Senior Honors Projects

Rhetoric and composition studies, a growing concentration within English studies, researches the theories and practices of teaching writing. A primary interest in the field is: how can students apply the writing skills they learn in the college classroom to other academic and non-academic contexts? This application involves a specific type of writing transfer, the act by which students recruit skills and knowledge used previously in order to effectively address a new situation. Scholars have defined transfer in a variety of ways since the early twentieth century, but all have reached consensus on an important point: successful transfer demands a wide …

Reference Without Acquaintance: Naming And Thought In Fiction And Science, Yiğit Can Kahyaoğlu Jan 2022

Reference Without Acquaintance: Naming And Thought In Fiction And Science, Yiğit Can Kahyaoğlu

Philosophy Honors Projects

Mill thought the semantic content of proper names is simply their referents. This is true even for objects we are not acquainted with, even though many contemporary Millian theories appeal to causal connections to account for the reference and thus the meaning of such names. However, in certain contexts, we refer to objects that we are not causally related to — moreover, we seem to be able to think about such objects, as well. Such cases appear in science and fiction, for example, when we talk about hypothetical objects and fictional characters. In this thesis, I will examine the naming …

Creating Cowboys And “Playing Indian”: Football And White Supremacy From 1890-1980, Lily B. Denehy

History Honors Projects

This honors thesis argues that football is a location of leisure which reinforces and (re)creates a comforting white male supremacist American empire through its use of imaginary frontiers, distortion of Native imagery and culture, and its development of mythic cowboy-heroes— which serve as escapes from ubiquitous national anxieties. I use textual and visual analysis of primary sources from the 1890s, 1920s, and 1970s to describe how football developed as a comforting space of leisure for white people in the face of national crises of masculinity, rights movements, and disillusionment with America’s empire.

“Living As Art”: Performance And The Haunting Of The Japanese Diaspora, Hana Tanabe Jan 2022

“Living As Art”: Performance And The Haunting Of The Japanese Diaspora, Hana Tanabe

East Asian Languages and Cultures Department Honors Papers

In this thesis, I focus on the themes of family memory and history in relation to the Japanese diaspora, and how performance becomes an invaluable method of expression and discovery when words are inadequate. To explore these themes, I analyze the performances of three Japanese and Japanese American artists, each of whom expresses their stories through a variety of genres, ranging from experimental short film and documentary to musical theater. Although the stories that the artists tell are connected by their discussion of the intergenerational impact of Japanese American incarceration in the United States during World War II, a history …

Creole Sketches, Lafcadio Hearn, Charles Woodward Hutson Jan 2022

Creole Sketches, Lafcadio Hearn, Charles Woodward Hutson

Zea E-Books Collection

New Orleans in 1878 was the most exotic and cosmopolitan city in North America. An international port, with more than 200,000 inhabitants, it was open to French, Spanish, Mexican, South American, and West Indian cultural influences, and home to a thriving population descended from free African Americans. It was also a battleground in the fight against yellow fever (malaria) and in the political upheavals that followed the end of Reconstruction. The continued influx of Anglo-Americans and the renewed ascendancy of white supremacists threatened to overwhelm the local blend of languages, races, and cultures that enlivened the unique Creole character of …

Historical Portrait Of Ann Fabe Isaacs: Founder Of The National Association For Gifted Children, Anna Armitage Jan 2022

Historical Portrait Of Ann Fabe Isaacs: Founder Of The National Association For Gifted Children, Anna Armitage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The historical portrait of Ann Fabe Isaacs examines the life of the founder of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and the Editor of the Gifted Child Quarterly from 1954-1974. Considering Isaacs’ personal and public work frames the founding of the NAGC, development of its mission, published essays, and advocacy work. Once the historical perspective has been considered, Isaacs’ work will be considered alongside the contemporary NAGC, its advocacy work, and its published writing. This portrait provides historical context for the founding of the NAGC and examines the influence of the founder on the contemporary organization.

Implications of the …

Food Insecurity, Racial Diversity, And Reservation Land: Relationships With The Credit Security Index, Theodor Gordon, Braden Orr Jan 2022

Food Insecurity, Racial Diversity, And Reservation Land: Relationships With The Credit Security Index, Theodor Gordon, Braden Orr

Initiative for Native Nation Relations

The Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibit banks from discriminating based on race, gender, national origin, and other protected categories. Are these laws enough to mitigate the multigenerational impacts of discrimination experienced by these communities? To address this question, this project examined whether unequal access to credit persists in communities on or adjacent to Indian reservations, communities with high levels of racial diversity, and communities where women are a greater percentage of the population than men.

Faith News Through Radio And Digital Media: An Exploratory Study Of Expats Seeking Islamic Information In Dubai, Uae, Urwa Mohammed Tariq

CoHSS Faculty Work

When non-Muslims become immersed in an Islamic way of life—a common occurrence in the UAE, a Muslim country where the majority of the resident population is foreign born—some become interested in learning more about the Islamic faith. This interest is also evident among new converts to Islam from other countries when they reside in the UAE. Little is known about how information about Islam is disseminated to non-Muslims and new Muslims in the UAE, how these expatriates search for the religious information they desire, and the challenges they encounter in their inquiries. This study applies the theory of diffusion of …

The Meaning Of Dark, Light And Shadows: Inferences In Art, Materiality And Cultural Practices, Frank Prendergast Jan 2022

The Meaning Of Dark, Light And Shadows: Inferences In Art, Materiality And Cultural Practices, Frank Prendergast

Book/Book Chapter

Our visual awareness relies on light acting on the eye to perceive materiality and colour. Medieval thought wrestled to articulate and comprehend its nature. The notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, for example, included his descriptions to define light and make comparisons so as to differentiate between light and shadow. His focus was on the illumination of surfaces from the perspective of a painter, seeing shadows as ‘the diminution of light by the intervention of an opaque body’ and ‘the counterpart of luminous rays’. In his mind, a shadow ‘stood between light and darkness’, with darkness being ‘the absence of light’. …

Jonathan Edwards’S Unique Role In An Imagined Church History, Spencer Kraus Jan 2022

Jonathan Edwards’S Unique Role In An Imagined Church History, Spencer Kraus

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This is the second of two papers reviewing Jonathan Neville’s latest books on the translation of the Book of Mormon. In Infinite Goodness, Neville claims that Joseph Smith’s vocabulary and translation of the Book of Mormon were deeply influenced by the famous Protestant minister Jonathan Edwards. Neville cites various words or ideas that he believes originate with Edwards as the original source for the Book of Mormon’s language. However, most of Neville’s findings regarding Edwards and other non-biblical sources are superficial and weak, and many of his findings have a more plausible common source: the language used by the King …

Modern Near East Archaeology And The Brass Plates, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2022

Modern Near East Archaeology And The Brass Plates, Noel B. Reynolds

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Contemporary Palestinian archaeology has produced two major threats to traditional interpretations of the history of ancient Israel. The first threat, which derives from scientific discomfort with the exodus story as an explanation for the sudden population expansion in southern Palestine at the beginning of the Iron Age (c. 1200 bce), has led to a wide variety of theories about how these Israelites could have been drawn from existing populations in the general area. This challenge is answerable in ways that preserve the exodus account, which is fundamental to the Book of Mormon as well as the Bible. The second threat …

“This Great Mystery”: Gathering Still Other Sheep Through The New Covenant Of Peace, Matthew Scott Stenson Jan 2022

“This Great Mystery”: Gathering Still Other Sheep Through The New Covenant Of Peace, Matthew Scott Stenson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon sheds light on a “great mystery” located in John 10:16 (D&C 10:64). In this paper, using a comparative method that traces intersecting pastoral imagery, I argue that John 10:16–18 (as opposed to merely John 10:16) not only refers to Jesus’s visit to the Lehites in Bountiful and the lost tribes of Israel (the standard LDS view), but that it has a scripturally warranted covenant-connection to the emergence and dissemination of the Nephite record. Specifically, the Book of Mormon, according to the Good Shepherd (3 Nephi 15:12–16:20), effectively serves as his recognizable voice to the inhabitants of …

When An Evident Fact Cannot Be Allowed To Be True, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2022

When An Evident Fact Cannot Be Allowed To Be True, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Miracles occur relatively often in scripture, as do people who, for various reasons, want or even need to deny their occurrence. The arguments that are deployed to justify such denial haven’t changed all that much over the centuries. In fact, they’re still around today.

There Is No Beauty That We Should Desire Him, Loren Spendlove Jan 2022

There Is No Beauty That We Should Desire Him, Loren Spendlove

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In two separate passages Isaiah appears to describe the mortal Messiah as lacking in physical beauty and perhaps as even having some type of physical disfigurement (see Isaiah 52:14 and 53:2–4). On the contrary, Joseph, David, Esther, and Judith — portrayed in the biblical text as physical saviors or deliverers of Israel — are represented as beautiful in form and appearance. In fact, their beauty seems to be a significant factor in the successful exercise of their power as physical saviors of Israel. Unlike Joseph, David, Esther, and Judith, Christ may have been foreordained to descend to his mortal state …

The Diachronic Usage Of Exclamation Marks Across The Major Book Of Mormon Editions, Scott L. Howell, Brooke Anderson, Lareina Hingson, Lanna D. Mcrae, Jesse Vincent, Brandon Torruella Jan 2022

The Diachronic Usage Of Exclamation Marks Across The Major Book Of Mormon Editions, Scott L. Howell, Brooke Anderson, Lareina Hingson, Lanna D. Mcrae, Jesse Vincent, Brandon Torruella

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The usage of the exclamation mark has changed over time but continues to serve as an important textual interpretation aid. Punctuation itself has not been a permanent fixture in English, rather it was slowly introduced to English documents with changing standard usages after the invention of the printing press. Here we highlight the use of the exclamation mark across major editions of the Book of Mormon and document the presence of the exclamation mark in a reference table.

A Rejoinder To Jonathan Neville’S “Response To Recent Reviews”, Spencer Kraus Jan 2022

A Rejoinder To Jonathan Neville’S “Response To Recent Reviews”, Spencer Kraus

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Jonathan Neville has offered a response to my two recent reviews of his works; however, in his response, Neville offers a poor defense regarding what he wrote and misrepresents my reviews of his works. As such, I present the following rejoinder in response to Neville’s concerns.
