Rethinking The Robe River Dispute 1986-7 – De-Unionisation In Australia’S Pilbara Iron Ore Industry In The Early Neoliberal Period, Alexis Vassiley Apr 2022

Rethinking The Robe River Dispute 1986-7 – De-Unionisation In Australia’S Pilbara Iron Ore Industry In The Early Neoliberal Period, Alexis Vassiley

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The Robe River dispute of 1986-7 was the anti-union New Right’s first attempt to defeat union power at a large workforce in Australia. This occurred during an industrial relations period of ‘cooperation’ between unions, employers and government under Australia’s social contract – the Accord. The dispute was also the first successful attack of its kind in Western Australia’s highly strike-prone Pilbara iron ore industry. Despite its subsequent victory, Robe River management was in a weak position during the dispute, and successful industrial action was a viable prospect. Unionists at the Robe River company were the most militant in the industry. …

Fingerprints Of Feeling: The Romantic Influence On Later Poetry, Brooke M. Neal Apr 2022

Fingerprints Of Feeling: The Romantic Influence On Later Poetry, Brooke M. Neal

Honors College Theses

Most readers and critics see the historical sequence of Western literature as a series of discrete literary periods and perceive these periods as reacting against one another like a pendulum swinging, each successive period countering its predecessor. This thesis interrogates that common understanding by demonstrating the persistence of Romantic themes in subsequent literary periods through the scope of British poetry. I trace three overarching tenets of the Romantic ideal through subsequent literary periods. literary periods: Romanticism, Victorianism, Modernism, and Postmodernism or the Contemporary era.

The Romantic ideal primarily emphasizes the importance of emotion over logic and reason. This ideal is …

Z Force On The Ground: The Canadian Deployment To Iceland, 1940-41, Steven J. Bright Apr 2022

Z Force On The Ground: The Canadian Deployment To Iceland, 1940-41, Steven J. Bright

Canadian Military History

The date of 10 May 1940 is well known for the start of the German blitzkrieg and the end of Neville Chamberlain’s tenure as British Prime Minister. That fateful day also opened a chapter in Canada’s war story that, in the end, saw more than 2,600 Canadian servicemen deployed to far-away but strategic Iceland. The Canadian commitment to that remote island from June 1940 to April 1941 was a metaphoric stepping-stone in the long Allied struggle against the Axis powers in the North Atlantic, building what ultimately became a secure strategic bridge for the deployment of the forces that liberated …

“Resigned To My Sad Fate:” Arthur Nantel And The Prisoner Of War Experience, Tim Cook, Mélanie Morin-Pelletier

Canadian Military History

In September 1914, forty-one-year-old artist Arthur Nantel, from Montreal, Quebec, enlisted as a private in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Travelling overseas with the First Contingent, his trial by fire came during the Second Battle of Ypres, in April 1915. Captured during the battle, Private Nantel spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Germany. During his captivity, Nantel left a unique visual legacy of his experiences. Based on several documents written by Nantel in 1919 and on thirty-one of his works of art held at the Canadian War Museum, this article explores his war service and works of …

“Long And Strenuous Duties In France:” Neurasthenia And Nervous Debility Among Canadian Nursing Sisters During The First World War, Ariane Gauthier

Canadian Military History

This article endeavours to understand the strenuous circumstances which caused neurasthenia and nervous debility in Canadian nursing sisters during the First World War. By examining the treatment they received for their condition at the Canadian Red Cross X Special Hospital and at Northwood Hospital for Sick Sisters in Buxton, this article also explores how Canadian medical authorities handled the nurses’ treatment and momentarily challenged previous conceptions concerning mental illness in women.

69 | The Kathisma Church And Monastery Of Mary Theotokos On The Jerusalem–Bethlehem Road Final Report Of The 1992, 1997, 1999 And 2000 Excavation Seasons, Rina Avner

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume documents the excavations of the Kathisma church and monastery located on the ancient road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Kathisma is mentioned in Byzantine sources and pilgrimage itineraries, and identified as the holy place where Mary sat down to rest in her final stage of pregnancy before giving birth to Jesus. It played a role in the initial stages of Mary’s worship and its influence is still felt today. The octagonal church, built in the fifth century CE, is one of the most important discoveries of Early Christian architecture in the Holy Land in recent decades. The size of …
