Climate Change: The Final Crisis Of Capital, Walker Daniel Peatross May 2022

Climate Change: The Final Crisis Of Capital, Walker Daniel Peatross

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

As the body of scientific research on climate change continues to grow it has become undeniable that we live in the midst of an ecological crisis; however, this leaves us with a myriad of secondary questions whose answers are more contentious. In this project, I use a mixture of Marxist and Phenomenological analysis to explore these uncertainties. In chapter one, I will detail Marx's description of capitalism both to demonstrate the inherent irrationality of the system and also to represent the ecological critique implicit in Marxist Theory. In chapter two, I will examine how the ideology of neoliberal political theory …

Increasing Engagement Of Veterans & Families Through Social Media, Nathan Erickson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Monterey County Office of Military & Veterans Affairs provides services to both veterans and family members through financial compensation and pension benefits. A macro level problem is veterans return from active duty and struggle with numerous issues including family instability, homelessness, health issues and financial strain. The agency level problem is a majority (70%) of veterans in Monterey County are not accessing benefits for which they are eligible. This project aims to connect non-service connected veterans and family members to the agency’s Facebook page to promote benefits and services as well as provide opportunities for community interaction. The goal …

Plague And Devastation In Ancient Greece: Why Mourning Matters, Hannah Kallin May 2022

Plague And Devastation In Ancient Greece: Why Mourning Matters, Hannah Kallin

Honors Scholar Theses

In 430 BC, The Plague of Athens swept through the city and left tens of thousands dead. Ancient historian Thucydides gives his account of the plague, detailing the consequent breakdown of order in the capital. Bodies could not be buried or mourned in the ideal traditional ceremonies, leaving surviving citizens unmoored and terrified. This paper explores the impact of interrupted mourning on ancient Greek society. These interruptions range from war and changing laws to periods of plague and widespread devastation. The emotional wellbeing of individual citizens depends on their ability to process death and associated grief with freedom and support …

“And We’Re Happy, So Happy, To Be Modern Women”: Dissociative Feminism On Screen And In Literature, Michaela Elizabeth Flaherty May 2022

“And We’Re Happy, So Happy, To Be Modern Women”: Dissociative Feminism On Screen And In Literature, Michaela Elizabeth Flaherty

Honors Scholar Theses

On-screen and literary works have increasingly represented a new, digital-age wave of postfeminism: dissociative feminism, which rejects happy-go-lucky, sex-positive fourth-wave feminism, instead embracing nihilism. Fleabag, the titular character of the hit BBC miniseries Fleabag (2016–9), embodies dissociative feminism, though she ultimately comes to reject this darkly relatable perspective. However, social media largely ignores this latter, essential aspect of her character arc and has taken to romanticizing Fleabag’s feminist ideology, effectively constructing a harmful and dangerous virtual echo chamber of dissociative feminism. Participants in this online discourse should instead turn to the HBO limited series I May Destroy You (2020) for …

Museum Talk: Conversations Regarding Art Museums’ Practices And Policies, Eva Solano May 2022

Museum Talk: Conversations Regarding Art Museums’ Practices And Policies, Eva Solano

Honors Scholar Theses

Taking the form of a podcast, Museum Talk: Conversations Regarding Art Museums’ Practices and Policies aims to explore the ways in which art museums have upheld racist policies, excluded BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) individuals from their spaces, but also investigate what these institutions can do to become more welcoming and comfortable to people across all identities. With interviews from artists, activists, and scholars from various establishments, each guest provides their own perspectives, opinions, and personal experiences on the topic, which is beneficial to understanding the ways in which art museums are failing and what can be done better. …

Music Of The Brown Church: Connecting Religion, Social Justice, Latina/O Studies And Worship Practices, Ann Richelle Jeandrevin May 2022

Music Of The Brown Church: Connecting Religion, Social Justice, Latina/O Studies And Worship Practices, Ann Richelle Jeandrevin

Masters Theses

This thesis project aims to explore music that is being used in churches that serve the Latino/a/x/e communities in the United States, which is also referred to as The Brown Church. As music serves a vital role in the cultural background in these communities, as does faith, the connection between these facets will give better insight into this growing and changing society in the United States. In addition to exploring the relationship between faith and worship music, there is a connecting component through understanding the dark history of the Latin American church and how that impacts faith, worship, and social …

Progressive Christianity: The Postmodern Mutation Of Theological Liberalism, Lisa Dundov May 2022

Progressive Christianity: The Postmodern Mutation Of Theological Liberalism, Lisa Dundov

Masters Theses

The intention of this thesis is to historically track Liberal Christianity, distinguishing its different shapes, dissecting its current form of Progressive Christianity, and then refute its tenets by holding them to the standard of orthodox Christianity. This project is organized into a chronological, historical approach to Liberal Christianity followed by a comparative approach to Progressive Christianity and orthodox Christianity. The historical research aims to identify and connect common, theologically liberal elements, a distinct man-centered theology, across different historical horizons, including the delineation of modernity, postmodernism, secularism, and humanism, which are influenced and shaped by theological liberalism. Focusing on the current …

However, despite their existence, so much is left in the unknown. Why was I given up, why was I not sought out, why did my family …

‘Let’S Rock!’: Analyzing Music As A Literary Precursor To The Sublime In The Works Of Lynch, Jesus Ivan Gonzalez May 2022

‘Let’S Rock!’: Analyzing Music As A Literary Precursor To The Sublime In The Works Of Lynch, Jesus Ivan Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

David Lynch’s style of cinema is easily recognizable, it is eccentric, bizarre, and surreal. Fans and film scholars alike hail the ‘Lynchian’ aspects within his films, moments that showcase incongruous images that do not line up within our sense of reality. Within the cinema of Lynch there exists a signature space that is a pure manifestation of sublimity. Within this space, anything goes; it is typically a vile and reprehensible place that feeds off the suffering of the film’s characters.

In four of Lynch’s selected films, Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986), Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me (1992), …
