Ballooning In The Second Seminole War, Michael G. Schene Dec 2021

Ballooning In The Second Seminole War, Michael G. Schene

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the course of the long and seemingly interminable Second Seminole War, various schemes— most of them impractical and expensive, and sometimes barbarous— were advanced to end the bloody and expensive conflict. Robert Gamble, one of Florida’s most prominent citizens, suggested that the government offer a bounty of $1,000 for every Seminole, whether dead or alive. This reward, he prophesized, “would be sufficient to bring men qualified for such enterprise from every part of the United States, even the trappers from the Northwest.“ The government apparently never gave this proposal very serious consideration. A bizarre scheme that did have official …

The Island Of Florida, Earl R. Beck Dec 2021

The Island Of Florida, Earl R. Beck

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the Spring of 1899 Prometheus, a dignified and respectable German industrial and scientific weekly magazine, featured an article about “Project Ally Sloper,” an engineering scheme of enormous proportions designed to divert the Gulf Stream and alter the climate of North America and Western Europe. German readers were told that Americans, flushed with success from the Spanish-American War, were contemplating spectacular peacetime plans. The periodical proclaimed its “immeasurable confidence” that this project, like all American plans, would be carried through successfully.

Letters From A Journey Through The Federal Blockade, 1861-1862, Thomas Graham Dec 2021

Letters From A Journey Through The Federal Blockade, 1861-1862, Thomas Graham

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Civil War was only nine months old in January 1862, and many persons, North and South, still clung to the hope the war would soon be over. Florida was a long distance away from where the major military and political decisions affecting her future were being made. There had been little activity since the tumultuous early weeks of the war when the Confederacy took over many of the Federal installations within the state. Some of the more important fortifications like those at Key West and Fort Pickens in Pensacola were to be denied to the Confederates throughout the war. …

A New England Emigrant Aid Company Agent In Postwar Florida: Selected Letters Of James F. B. Marshall, 1867, Patricia P. Clark

Florida Historical Quarterly

When the New England Emigrant Aid Company, seeking to revitalize its colonizing enterprises after the Civil War, considered Florida as a prime location for northern settlers, the officers sent James F. B. Marshall on a scouting tour of the state. A native New Englander, former Hawaiian businessman, and paymaster general of Massachusetts troops, Marshall had volunteered for the assignment shortly after his election to the company’s board of directors in November 1866. Before he left Boston for a New York departure on December 18, Marshall was given a letter of instructions drafted by President John Murray Forbes and Vice President …

Cuban Revolutionaries And Monroe County Reconstruction Politics, 1868-1876, Gerald E. Poyo Dec 2021

Cuban Revolutionaries And Monroe County Reconstruction Politics, 1868-1876, Gerald E. Poyo

Florida Historical Quarterly

The intricate historical relationship between the United States and Cuba has traditionally fostered intimate contacts between segments of their populations. Florida has served as the primary stage upon which the two cultures have confronted and coexisted. Although the post-Castro immigration has dominated the attention of those interested in tracing Cuban contributions to the development of the state, it should be emphasized that the Cuban presence in Florida has been equally important during earlier periods.

The Alachua Trail: A Reconstruction, Burke G. Vanderhill Dec 2021

The Alachua Trail: A Reconstruction, Burke G. Vanderhill

Florida Historical Quarterly

Among numerous Indian pathways forming a network within the American Southeast at the time of European contact was one which led southward from the Altamaha River of Georgia to the Alachua country of Florida. (Fig. 1) This “Alachua Trail” was well known in the colonial period, a fact pointing to long aboriginal use. Today however the trail is unmarked and generally lost to memory, and only rare and tantalizingly brief references to it appear in the historical record.

Allegory, Symbolism, And Metaphor In Le Roman De Fauvel, Maria Coulter, Jake Loitz, Cait Duffy Dec 2021

Allegory, Symbolism, And Metaphor In Le Roman De Fauvel, Maria Coulter, Jake Loitz, Cait Duffy

2021 Festschrift: The Interpolated Roman de Fauvel in Context

Roman de Fauvel is a 14th century work composed of poetry, story, an overarching narrative, and music to accompany the literature. In this study, our research is dedicated towards finding and analyzing the many instances of allegory and symbolism in the highly philosophical, satirical, and critical work. Using French 13th and 14th century historical context, we determine the origins of the subject matter of these allegories. Through this historical lens, we can observe what du Bus wants to convey through allegory as a response to his historical climate, and we can take that response and assign meaning to it in …

Art As Contextualization: Using Visual Communication As Christian Missions In Native American And Alaskan Cultures, Hali Gehring Dec 2021

Art As Contextualization: Using Visual Communication As Christian Missions In Native American And Alaskan Cultures, Hali Gehring

Senior Honors Theses

Contextualization is an important aspect of Christian ministries and cross-cultural missions to create sustaining churches around the world. There are many forms of communication that use contextualization for religious purposes, such as theatre, story, art, and dance. These important forms of communication can be used with cultural practices to contextualize the Gospel to different people groups. For Native Americans and Alaskans, artistic works that promote cultural heritage are highly regarded. A beadwork piece that explains the Gospel could be a creative way to contextualize to Native American and Alaskans.

Kenneth S. Stern’S, The Conflict Over The Conflict: The Israel/Palestine Campus Debate [2020 Toronto And Buffalo: The New Jewish Press/University Of Toronto Press. $29.95], Steven Leonard Jacobs

Journal of Hate Studies

The Conflict Over the Conflict is an important contribution to the overall literature regarding the (seeming) turmoil on many of our college and university campuses—but not all, including my own where controversial issues surface rarely if at all—vis-à-vis the Israel/Palestine conflict, free speech and controversial speakers, and the like. Stern brings to the discussion not only his lawyerly training and his skill set, but, as of late, his directorship of the academic Bard College Center for the Study of Hate and thus combining both with a singular focus. Even more importantly, perhaps, his firm commitment to the campus as the …

Clean Fields, Lindsey E. Creel Dec 2021

Clean Fields, Lindsey E. Creel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Clean Fields is an exhibition consisting of 3 anthotypes and 11 drawings on paper mounted to panels. The work is part homage and part documentation of the emotionally restorative properties found in gardening. It is a contemporary view of a timeless activity. While the work references realistic content, the artistic outcomes are non-objective. Modifications in composition and scale provide variation throughout the series. The large-scale of the works and the use of economy and movement in the composition move the viewer into a meditative state.

Canada’S Right-Wing Extremists: Mapping Their Ties, Location, And Ideas, Bessma Momani, Ryan Deschamps Dec 2021

Canada’S Right-Wing Extremists: Mapping Their Ties, Location, And Ideas, Bessma Momani, Ryan Deschamps

Journal of Hate Studies

Canada has often been seen as a progressive country that is welcoming to immigrants, promotes multiculturalism, and generally as a kind and tolerant society. This study used a two-month close examination of Canada’s RWE online presence surrounding the 2019 federal election. Using social network analysis, this study fills a needed empirical gap in current understanding of this network that are known to produce and sustain domestic terrorism and extremist hate crimes in Canada. Then using both discourse and correspondence analysis, we find that Canada’s Right-Wing Extremists (RWEs) galvanize around the following key ideas: leftist-propensities towards violence, projecting especially views against …

Student-Perceived Inclusivity In The Fyc Classroom: Embracing Multilingualism, Melinda Grant Dec 2021

Student-Perceived Inclusivity In The Fyc Classroom: Embracing Multilingualism, Melinda Grant

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

The purpose of this study was to compare student perspectives on inclusivity in the first-year English composition classroom viewed explicitly through two distinct lenses: 1. a pre-post survey design that measures students’ perceptions of classroom inclusivity and 2. instructor-perceived observations that reflect upon methods of pedagogical delivery within a multimodal framework. The results provide a further understanding of how curriculum is being received in a diverse academic environment utilizing blended instructional modalities. While all students did not embrace purposeful means of translanguaging via code-meshing in classroom formative and summative writing opportunities, 100% of students surveyed indicated experiencing inclusivity in the …

Analysis Of Hate Crimes In Transgender Communities, Jane Gauthier, Kevin Medina, Carly Dierkhising Dec 2021

Analysis Of Hate Crimes In Transgender Communities, Jane Gauthier, Kevin Medina, Carly Dierkhising

Journal of Hate Studies

Research shows that the LGBTQ population is disproportionately affected by hate crimes and those against transgender individuals are especially violent. Given the considerable underreporting of these crimes, better insight into the victimization experiences and reasons for underreporting is necessary to improve the safety of the transgender community and secure necessary services for these victims. The current study takes a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach by creating and utilizing an Advisory Board made up of service providers in the transgender community in Los Angeles, to assist in the development of a survey instrument and focus group questions and provide venues for …

Religious Persecution & Oppression: A Study Of Iranian Baha’Ís’ Strategies Of Survival, Naghme Naseri Morlock Dec 2021

Religious Persecution & Oppression: A Study Of Iranian Baha’Ís’ Strategies Of Survival, Naghme Naseri Morlock

Journal of Hate Studies

Members of the Baha’í faith in Iran have been ongoing targets of systematic oppression, persecution, and extreme hate since the religion was founded in 1844. Despite there being a large diaspora as a consequence of their persecution, Baha’ís remain a thoroughly underexplored population in the field of hate studies, in addition to being neglected in most other fields as well. The Baha’ís’ experiences and unique positionality as ethnic insiders and religious outsiders in their home country provide important and distinctive insights into their survival and response strategies in the face of violence, trauma, and persecution. Drawing on fifty in-depth interviews …

Domestic Terrorist Acts As Cultural Texts: A Pentadic Analysis, A. J. Grant, Guy Philbin Dec 2021

Domestic Terrorist Acts As Cultural Texts: A Pentadic Analysis, A. J. Grant, Guy Philbin

Journal of Hate Studies

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once said that publicity is the oxygen of terrorism. It is our position that mass-mediated terrorism, white supremacy, and doctrines of racial superiority that justify discrimination, segregation, domination, and even extermination of persons of color should be deprived of the oxygen of publicity. At the same time, we believe that analysis, discussion, confrontation, and condemnation of terrorism and hateful ideologies is painful but necessary. The hate speech and radical ideologies of today’s web-based terrorists reach far beyond traditional means of communication. The purpose of this paper is to use Kenneth Burke’s pentad to analyze …
