Working For A More Divine Model, Mcarthur Krishna, Bethany Brady Spalding Jul 2020

Working For A More Divine Model, Mcarthur Krishna, Bethany Brady Spalding

BYU Studies

When Bethany’s daughter Simone was almost three, she and Bethany were reading a popular LDS children’s book of scripture stories. At the end of it, Simone turned to her mom and demanded, “Where are the girls? I want to read about the girls!” Not unfamiliar with this question herself, Bethany was still surprised. She picked up the book, flipped through, and found the authors had not chosen to tell the story of even a single woman.

Hope In A Time Of Fracture, Anne Snyder Jul 2020

Hope In A Time Of Fracture, Anne Snyder

BYU Studies

In the spring of 2015, I encountered two worlds within twenty-four hours—worlds yoked by creed but divided by demographic and disposition. On a crisp Wednesday evening in May, I was invited to attend a cocktail reception at the New York Yacht Club for a celebration among Jews, Catholics, and Evangelicals honoring the legacy of a man named Dietrich von Hildebrand, a philosopher and anti-Nazi hero during World War II. The room was filled with intellectuals, politicos, bankers, and think-tankers, and they were largely male and all Caucasian. These were true believers, and yet they felt isolated in their faith amid …

Turley is a former assistant Church historian and former managing director of the Department of Public Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Christensen has spent much of his career at the Church History Department collecting Latter-day Saint history from Latin America. An Apostolic …

¿Un Nuevo Fragmento De Quaestiones In Exodum De Filón En Las Recientemente Descubiertas Homiliae In Psalmos De Orígenes? Una Nota Preliminar, Michael B. Cover Jul 2020

¿Un Nuevo Fragmento De Quaestiones In Exodum De Filón En Las Recientemente Descubiertas Homiliae In Psalmos De Orígenes? Una Nota Preliminar, Michael B. Cover

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The aim of this study is to analyze a potential new fragment of Quaestiones in Exodum in the recently discovered Homiliae in Psalmos of Origen. To make this case, I will first weigh the evidence for and against a Philonic provenance for the tradition cited by Origen (whether paraphrase or citation). I will then offer some lexical, thematic, and form-critical considerations, which suggest that Origen is citing a Philonic interpretation from the Quaestiones rather than paraphrasing the Allegorical Commentary.

Interdenominational Dialogue In Contemporary Ukraine: Correction In War And Pandemic Conditions, Liudmyla Fylypovych, Oksana Horkusha Jul 2020

Interdenominational Dialogue In Contemporary Ukraine: Correction In War And Pandemic Conditions, Liudmyla Fylypovych, Oksana Horkusha

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article analyzes the current state of interreligious communication in Ukraine and proves the need to correct interfaith dialogue during the war in Eastern Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors identify objective and subjective reasons for dialogue and recognize relevant issues (the lack of a joint denominational position on the need for dialogue), and new threats (the war and the pandemic) for establishing tolerant relations between religious organizations in Ukraine. Natural and socio-political catastrophes only expose problems that were not solved in peacetime. Preserving past achievements in interfaith communication is extremely important for creating new dialogue platforms. The existing …

An Engine Of Change? The Affordable Care Act And The Shifting Politics Of Demonstration Projects, Philip Rocco, Andrew S. Kelly Jul 2020

An Engine Of Change? The Affordable Care Act And The Shifting Politics Of Demonstration Projects, Philip Rocco, Andrew S. Kelly

History Faculty Research and Publications

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) made a number of institutional investments intended to expand the federal government’s ability to scale successful demonstration projects into national policy. This article considers how the ACA has reshaped the politics of programmatic innovation in Medicare and Medicaid. A qualitative synthesis of demonstration results suggests that, although the ACA has removed several important veto points to the expansion of successful demonstration projects, numerous barriers to the scaling of reforms remain. These barriers include procedures and techniques that make it difficult to certify the “success” of demonstrations yet make their limitations highly legible. …

Effective Pastoral Leadership To Catalyze A Disciple-Making Church, Juan Victor Acevedo Jul 2020

Effective Pastoral Leadership To Catalyze A Disciple-Making Church, Juan Victor Acevedo

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Most churches are in a current state of plateau or declining. Although there are several variables that contribute to this status, a lack of willing and qualified disciplers have contributed to it. Why is there a lack of willing and qualified disciplers? Do pastors understand their biblical role as equippers? Does the church understand their role in ministry? Through the result of this research, the researcher will propose a biblical-based discipleship plan as well as other biblical recommendations to ameliorate the areas identified with deficiencies to improve leadership as well as the discipleship-making process.

The Relationship Between Music Performance Anxiety And Self-Efficacy In Sixth To Eighth Grade Instrumental Students, Brian Bersh Jul 2020

The Relationship Between Music Performance Anxiety And Self-Efficacy In Sixth To Eighth Grade Instrumental Students, Brian Bersh

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research study examined the relationship of self-efficacy to performance anxiety, as outlined in social cognitive theory. The purpose of this nonexperimental, quantitative study was to test the theory of social cognitive theory that relates self-efficacy to anxiety. MPA and music performance self-efficacy (MPSE) were tested within the context of a school setting for instrumental music-making. The participants (N = 228) included a stratified random sample of Grade 6 to 8 instrumental middle school students located within the Mid-Atlantic region. To determine levels of MPA and MPSE, participants completed the Music Performance Anxiety Inventory for Adolescents and the Music Performance …

The Lived Experiences Of High School Students Who Self-Identify As Readers: A Phenomenological Study, Michael J. Romick Jul 2020

The Lived Experiences Of High School Students Who Self-Identify As Readers: A Phenomenological Study, Michael J. Romick

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and better understand the lived experiences of what it means to be a reader as a high school student. The literature revealed a plethora of studies and articles on various aspects of reading and many pieces from teachers, researchers, and academics’ perspectives, but there are virtually no studies that have explored what being a reader means from the high school reader’s perspective; no studies that have explored the lived experiences of what being a reader means to high school students. The central question guiding this study asked, “What is the lived …

Positive And Negative Uses Of The Exodus Motif In Prophetic And Apocalyptic Biblical Literature, Charles Joshua Parrott Jul 2020

Positive And Negative Uses Of The Exodus Motif In Prophetic And Apocalyptic Biblical Literature, Charles Joshua Parrott

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In the following pages of this dissertation, I address two questions: 1) How do biblical authors reuse the exodus motif in positive and negative ways? 2) What does theological reflection on these uses yield? In Chapter One, we will see that the historical exodus is not only contextually plausible, but it is also particularly doctrinal. The exodus reveals noteworthy truths for God’s people today, and these truths need to be continually affirmed. Chapter Two shows that collectively, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel had an understanding of Israelite history, and they trusted God’s sovereign control of that history. These prophets also had …

Doing Latinidad While Black: Afro-Latino Identity And Belonging, Vianny Jasmin Nolasco Jul 2020

Doing Latinidad While Black: Afro-Latino Identity And Belonging, Vianny Jasmin Nolasco

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study centers on the experiences of Afro-Latinos and how the racialization of Latino as a distinctly ‘brown’ identity—thereby excluding Blackness—shapes their identity and sense of belonging within Latino communities and spaces. Through in-depth interviews with eight Afro-Latinos, and using West and Fenstermaker’s (1995) work, ‘Doing Difference’, I find that the invisibility of Blackness, being categorized as Black, and therefore not Latino, and the negative meanings attached to Blackness may make it difficult for Afro-Latinos to come into their racial and ethnic identity and feel like they belong in Latino spaces. However, these experiences are also an important step to …

The Story Of A Shipwrecked Slave: The Role Of Esteban De Dorantes As An Interpreter In The Early Exploration And Conquest Of The Americas, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez Jul 2020

The Story Of A Shipwrecked Slave: The Role Of Esteban De Dorantes As An Interpreter In The Early Exploration And Conquest Of The Americas, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

English: When the Spanish launched the exploration and conquest of the Americas, they enlisted a host of interpreters for the task of Empire. These interpreters came from varying backgrounds, but the two most common profiles seem to be that of Indigenous or Mestizo individuals, on the one side, and Europeans who learned the languages of the conquered on the other. A less well—known, less researched group included people of African ancestry. This paper seeks to inquire into the latter type of interpreter by presenting a historical case study of Esteban de Dorantes, an African slave who became an interpreter. The …

Reviving Rhetoric Through Conversation: Feminist Rhetorical Pedagogies For A Deliberative Democracy, Sadie Suzanne Carr Jul 2020

Reviving Rhetoric Through Conversation: Feminist Rhetorical Pedagogies For A Deliberative Democracy, Sadie Suzanne Carr

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have long discussed the possibilities of a deliberative democracy in which the people of the nation engage in public dialogue and discuss the pressing political, social, and economic issues of the day, in order to encourage political participation (Gripsrud et al. xix). This thesis suggests that in order to achieve something resembling a deliberative democracy, there must be an increase in rhetorical education throughout a student’s schooling in order to foster the skills that young people need to participate in public deliberation once they leave the classroom. In order to achieve these educational goals, this thesis also proposes that …

King James Vi And I: Witch-Hunter And Protector Of The Realm, Joni Raylene Creed Jul 2020

King James Vi And I: Witch-Hunter And Protector Of The Realm, Joni Raylene Creed

Masters Theses

After the discovery of a conspiracy to kill the king at sea, King James VI of Scotland became frightfully consumed with stamping out witches in his kingdom. He believed that witches were in league with the devil and that they were an imminent threat to his life and sovereignty as king. In the early 1590s, he bypassed legal precedent by directly interrogating and judging Scottish witches. He wrote a treatise in 1597 to warn of the existence of witches and the danger that witchcraft possessed. His involvement in the North Berwick witch trials was an interesting chapter in Scottish history. …

English As A Lingua Franca: Improving Technical Writing And Communication Methods For International Audiences, Lauren Alyssa Serrani Jul 2020

English As A Lingua Franca: Improving Technical Writing And Communication Methods For International Audiences, Lauren Alyssa Serrani

Masters Theses

This thesis centers on the role of English as a lingua franca in global communication, particularly as it pertains to technical written communication. Over the 20th century, English emerged as the primary language used in global communication. As a result, efforts have been made to standardize the language and teach this standardized English in schools and writing programs around the world. Standard American and British English are dominant in academic and professional fields, which inhibits both native and nonnative language learners from reaching their full potential. This project focuses on the most prominent language acquisition methodologies - Standard English, translingualism, …

Moral Rivals: The Intersection Between Puritanism And Piracy In The 17th And 18th Centuries, Amy Stewart Jul 2020

Moral Rivals: The Intersection Between Puritanism And Piracy In The 17th And 18th Centuries, Amy Stewart

Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to explore the relationship between American colonial Puritans and Atlantic pirates in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Due to their conflicting views on morality and faith, Christianity and piracy consistently tested the other’s resilience for what they believed. Their contrasting moralities intersected in countless ways throughout the colonies, evident through an increasing pattern and shift towards piracy and seafaring in the subject matter of Christian sermons, as well as the introduction of execution sermons that presented an opportunity for preachers to minister to pirates, giving them a final chance at redemption before they were sentenced …

A Legacy Preserved: A Comparison Of The Careers And Recordings Of Stanley Drucker And Karl Leister, Peter M. Geldrich Jul 2020

A Legacy Preserved: A Comparison Of The Careers And Recordings Of Stanley Drucker And Karl Leister, Peter M. Geldrich

Theses and Dissertations

Today’s musician has an unprecedented amount of recordings through which they can influence their tonal concept, guide their phasing, and instill appropriate musical style. However, this abundance of recordings is both a treasure trove and a labyrinth in which one can lose their way without proper background on the recording artist. This context is necessary to determine the recordings in which a particular artist is most adept, and what stylistic lessons the artist best imparts. This document provides a comprehensive study of the careers and recordings of two of the most important clarinetists of the twentieth-century; Stanley Drucker and Karl …

The Deconstruction Of Patriarchal War Narratives In Svetlana Alexievich’S The Unwomanly Face Of War, Liubov Kartashova Jul 2020

The Deconstruction Of Patriarchal War Narratives In Svetlana Alexievich’S The Unwomanly Face Of War, Liubov Kartashova

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how the Soviet construction of womanhood resulted first in females’ active participation in World War II and then in the silencing of women’s war experiences by fabricating a reality in which women’s trauma did not exist. Such a deprivation of women’s agency led to female soldiers’ confusion of identity, experience of shame and consequential self-censorship. In The Unwomanly Face of War (У войны не женское лицо, 1985), Svetlana Alexievich acknowledges these neglected experiences and traumas, and creates a space in which women’s stories have a right to exist. Applying Jean Elshtain’s theory on the lack of attention …

Calculating A Hero: Computational Analysis And Chivalry In Chaucer’S The Canterbury Tales, Alexander Handley Humphreys Jul 2020

Calculating A Hero: Computational Analysis And Chivalry In Chaucer’S The Canterbury Tales, Alexander Handley Humphreys

Theses and Dissertations

This project aims to provide a basis by which distant reading techniques may be applied to Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The critical corpus is oddly devoid of studies examining these techniques as tools for understanding Chaucer’s work. This paper endeavors to rectify this gap by demonstrating the kinds of insights made available by computational distant reading techniques as described by Johanna Drucker, Matthew Jockers and Jerome Bellegarda, among others. This study is founded on the belief that close reading and other forms of analysis needlessly exclude a broader view of the target work. It is not my intention in this …

What Is A Museum? Difference All The Way Down, Fiona Candlin, Jamie Larkin Jul 2020

What Is A Museum? Difference All The Way Down, Fiona Candlin, Jamie Larkin

Art Faculty Articles and Research

The Mapping Museums research team recently compiled a dataset of UK museums. In doing so, we had to decide what counted as a museum. In this paper, we outline our initial approaches for establishing the criteria for selection: using definitions; key characteristics; and self-identification; and describe why they proved inadequate with respect to the heterogeneity of museum practice. We then explain how assemblage theory helped us conceptualise the complex realities of the museum sector and to address the problem of selection, which in turn led to our developing a non-essentialising model of museums and a new account of the UK …

Nora’S Ironic Longing For Christlike Love Self‐ Sacrifice, Self‐Love, And The “Religion Of Torvald” In Ibsen’S A Doll House, David V. Urban Jul 2020

Nora’S Ironic Longing For Christlike Love Self‐ Sacrifice, Self‐Love, And The “Religion Of Torvald” In Ibsen’S A Doll House, David V. Urban

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This essay argues that in Ibsen’s A Doll House, both Nora and her husband, Torvald Helmer, exhibit a “religion of Torvald” characterized by their respective devotion to Torvald himself. However, while Torvald’s devotion to himself is characterized by self‐love and self-centeredness, Nora’s “religion of Torvald” is based on her expectation that Torvald will exhibit the Christlike office of bearing Nora’s sins by proclaiming himself guilty of her crime of forgery, thus rendering her blameless. After Torvald shatters Nora’s expectations by reacting with abuse and cowardice to the news of Nora’s forgery and Krogstad’s consequent blackmail, Nora loses her previous faith …

Scenic Design For “Topdog Underdog”, Austin Aschbrenner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 2019 production of Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks at the University of Arkansas was produced with a guest director who, throughout the process of the production, experimented with the typical perception of the Pulitzer Prize winning play and added conceptual spins to help open the eyes of the mostly small town and rural based audience. This thesis will explore the various elements of this particular production and which of these elements contributed to exploring the depths of Topdog/Underdog.

This document will analyze the design process of the University of Arkansas’s production of Topdog/Underdog, and will analyze specific design choices which …

“Deserting The Broad And Easy Way”: Southern Methodist Women, The Social Gospel, And The New Deal State, 1909-1939, Chelsea Hodge Jul 2020

“Deserting The Broad And Easy Way”: Southern Methodist Women, The Social Gospel, And The New Deal State, 1909-1939, Chelsea Hodge

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the course of three decades, white southern Methodist women took on issues of labor and poverty through their national women’s organization, the Woman’s Missionary Council (WMC). Between 1909 and 1939, the WMC focused their work on five groups of people they viewed as in need of their help: women, children, black southerners, immigrants, and rural people. Motivated by the Social Gospel and an intense belief that their faith led them to effect real change in the American South, the WMC intervened in people’s lives, pursuing reform that could at times be maternalistic and condescending but at other times radical …
