These are in the possession of Mrs. John W. Greenslade, a descendant of John Innerarity, the last surviving partner of the latter firm. She has transcribed them. Topographical Memoir on East and West Florida With Itineraries of General Jackson’s Army, by Capt. Hugh Young of that army, appeared in the last three issues of the Quarterly. Another series on the same general subject of roads and travel in Florida in the early nineteenth century will be begun in the October number next: papers relating to the survey and construction of the Pensacola-St. Augustine highway, arranged and with an introduction by Mark F. Boyd to whom we are indebted for the Young memoir.

The news that the Seminoles had begun hostilities in Florida spread slowly early in January, 1836. The intelligence stirred the country, however. The War Department had heard of the Dade’ massacre and of other Indian atrocities as early as January 4, but it was not until January 17 that it received official verification of the battle of the Withlacoochee.

Crystal river rises in a group of large springs a few miles south of the Withlacoochee river on the west coast of Florida and flows westward for eight miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Fish are abundant in the river and the small town of Crystal River situated at the source owes its existence to an extensive fishing industry carried on in the region. Large oyster beds lie just off the mouth of the river and supply oysters to many cities in Florida.

This part of the report contains sketches of the routes of the Army from Hartford, Georgia to Fort Scott, and thence through east and west Florida to Fort Montgomery in the Alabama territory with hints for the construction and improvement of roads through the more difficult parts of the country. It was thought best to give the Itineraries the last. place in the report, as the particular description of the routes is made more intelligible and satisfactory by the general account of the country (p. 323) which preceded it.

The story of the African slave trade after its prohibition in 1808 is one which, because of the illicit nature of the trade, can never be fully known. In Florida, as in other Southern states, however, occasional hints of this subterranean traffic found their way into records which have been preserved. This paper is based in part upon a number of letters written by Wise to W. F. Samford, of Alabama, during the decade prior to the War. The originals are in the possession of Dr. George Petrie, Professor of History and Dean of the Graduate School, Alabama Polytechnic Institute; and it was on his suggestion that the paper was written, some years ago, soon after the letters were brought to light.

In a communication from General Jackson addressed to the Hon. John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War, from Fort Gadsden, May 5, 1818, there occurs the following statement: “For a detailed account of my movements from that period to this day, you are respectfully referred to the report prepared by my adjutant general, accompanied with Captain Hugh Young’s topographical sketch of the route and distance performed”. This evidently refers to the memoir and itineraries here presented.

The fluctuating price of cotton in the 1840’s caused the cotton planters of Florida, like their brethren in other parts of the South, to consider ways in which they might stabilize the price of their staple crop in order to stave off economic ruin. 1 Numerous proposals were made to this end, 2 but none met with more widespread response throughout the South than that. of bringing the cotton mill to the cotton field by establishing cotton manufactories throughout the cotton producing regions.
