This study discusses the issue of offence to sensibilities as possible grounds for limiting freedom of expression. This issue is constantly brought to the public agenda, as for example, in the limitation imposed in Israel on the playing of Richard Wagner’s music by Israeli orchestras. The present investigation consists of two studies designed to provide a preliminary examination of a new scale for measuring hateful emotional responses to being hurt by an offender. Study 1 involved definition of hateful emotional responses, item development, analysis of internal consistency, and convergent and incremental validity. The scale was evaluated in a sample of 33 young (M = 26) college and community adults. A five-item hateful emotional responses scale was developed and psychometric properties of the scale were encouraging. Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe

The current study aimed to augment the scant body of literature on anti-LGBTQ hate by providing an in-depth examination of anti-LGBTQ hate incident situational characteristics including offender substance use, number of offenders, crime location, and victim-offender relationship. Analysis of situational dynamic variables provided support for the notion that anti-LGBTQ hate is a distinct type of criminal incident. Significantly increased levels of offender substance use, crimes perpetrated by multiple offenders, crimes perpetrated by acquaintances, and crimes taking place in open spaces substantiates the theory that anti-LGBTQ hate is qualitatively unique, typified by different characteristics than other forms of crime. Among the language units there are also words that have undergone phonetic changes in pronunciation. From a phonostylistic point of view, the pronunciation of such words have additional, i.e. connotative meanings. Phonetically modified words are divided into two, that is, the increase and decrease of speech sound in the pronunciation of words. The phenomenon of so-called sound acquisition includes the phenomena of prosthesis, epenthesis, epithesis. The so-called sound omission includes aphaeresis, syncope, apocope, elision.

This article offers a distant reading of Khamphun Bunthawi’s Luk Isan (A Child of the Northeast) as world literature. By attending to its production, circulation, translation, and reception in an interlocking literary system, it shows that the novel borrows the bildungsroman form from an American children’s novel. This borrowing underlines the role of translated literature and editors in establishing a profoundly unequal relationship between the Western core and peripheral literatures. This paper examines friendship across ethnic boundaries in two young adult novels: John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Daniella Carmi’s Samir and Yonatan. In the first novel, the author recounts a story of the Holocaust during the Second World War while the latter deals with the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Although both young adult novels concern different ethnic backgrounds, they are both set in the midst of conflicts and wars between two nations. The story of the Mon King ‘Rachathirat’ or ‘Rājādhirāj’ has been familiar to the Mon, Burmese and Thai people for centuries. There are numerous manuscripts in various versions found in Myanmar, written in Burmese or Mon. Thailand, as the neighboring state and a popular destination of the migratory Mon, also holds the collections of Rājādhirāj manuscripts in many different versions, composed either in Thai, Mon, or Pali, the latter being the language of the most recently discovered Rājādhirāj manuscripts. This article examines the strategies used in translating Thai serial verb constructions (SCVs) into English. The data used in this research is from a 64,879-word parallel corpus of Klin Fang The Sweet Scent of Hay, a collection of 10 short storiesThe scope of the study is limited to SVCs containing 2 verbs that describe simultaneous events. Quantitative analysis reveals that out of 61 samples, including those that occur more than once but are translated differently, 50 constructions or 81.97% show the same equivalent effects between the original text and the target text, while 11 constructions or 18.03% do …

This article studies the content, structure, and language used in Chinese newspaper headlines related to Thailand and examines images that represent Thailand in the same headlines, collecting 474 pieces of data from a Chinese daily newspaper, People’s Daily, from a 5-year period from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019. In 1945, a few days after the Japanese Imperial Army had surrendered, the indigenous people on the Indonesian archipelago established the Republic of Indonesia and declared independence from their colonizers, the Dutch. The events led to a 4-year conflict including physical war and negotiations, before the Dutch government finally transferred its sovereignty over the archipelago to the indigenous government in 1949. Through historical diplomatic correspondence from both Thai and Dutch archives, this article examines changes in Thai foreign policy towards the Netherlands in the last year of the conflict.
