El Trans-Jesús Crístico, Chrystoph Damien Dec 2020

El Trans-Jesús Crístico, Chrystoph Damien

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

Asian Christian spirituality is often viewed through the lens of western theology, which is often grounded in biblical literalism. Within this literalist faith, spirituality becomes a mimicry of dogma. Hence, spiritual experiences are usually only allowed within existing theological perimeters. This essay invites readers to journey beyond their circumscribed faith and meet the Christ who had transcended his physical limitations into the luminous glory of liberating life. The quest for inner experience of God is a possible encounter for everyone including the LGBTIQ+ people through the reflective experience of Christ. This Christic experience is beautifully portrayed in the life of …

Posesiones Sexo-Generizadas: Géneros Móviles Y Sexualidades Disputadas En Rituales De Kimbanda, Dahiana Barrales Palacio Dec 2020

Posesiones Sexo-Generizadas: Géneros Móviles Y Sexualidades Disputadas En Rituales De Kimbanda, Dahiana Barrales Palacio

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article outlines some interpretive and analytical clues that discuss the relationship between African-based religions and sexual and gender classifications in their doctrinal body. It mainly focuses on the performance of ritual manifestations. My election of Kimbanda rituals relies on the manifestations of Pomba Gira. This spiritual entity appears in the archetype of a sensual and powerful woman who, in her earthly life, was a prostitute. During the rituals, she becomes a queen. It concludes that African-based religions involve different ways of being and inhabiting the world, both material and spiritual. That characteristic allows for the bending of gender/sexual norms …

Queering Pentecost(Alism): Advocating For Inclusion Of Affirming Pentecostal Congregations, Telaireus Herrin Dec 2020

Queering Pentecost(Alism): Advocating For Inclusion Of Affirming Pentecostal Congregations, Telaireus Herrin

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

Modern understandings and constructions of sexuality challenge the heteronormative hegemony of most Christian denominations. Pentecostalism faces similar challenges. For LGBTIQ+ Christians, affirmative congregations have been places of refuge to counter destructive doctrines and teachings related to sexuality, marriage, membership, and participation in the church. The taxonomy of Pentecostalism typically includes four movements within Pentecostalism. I postulate a fifth type of Pentecostalism —Affirmative Pentecostal Congregations— which disrupts and dismantles exclusive constructions of sexuality and affirms an inclusive faith.

Sobre No Parecerse A Cristo, Marcella Althaus-Reid Dec 2020

Sobre No Parecerse A Cristo, Marcella Althaus-Reid

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

Traditionally, Roman Catholicism has postulated that Jesus was a man who chose men to follow his mission as priests and that women cannot symbolically represent the masculinity of the messiah. Latin American Liberation Theology took the pattern of women’s work in communities to develop its way of theologizing. Women practiced this type of theology mainly for reasons of political exclusion. Due to this, the article explores the theology of women around the issues of female ordination, taking into account its methods based on participatory principles where people occupy the first place.

La Homosexualidad Y La Biblia: Practicando Textos Seguros, Robert Shore-Goss Dec 2020

La Homosexualidad Y La Biblia: Practicando Textos Seguros, Robert Shore-Goss

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article addresses the interpretations of Biblical texts used against queer believers. Commonly known as «texts of terror,» they have been cited as God-given prohibitions of same-sex relationships. The analysis uncovers the bias and the various representations of gender and sexuality in the Ancient Near East and the Greco-Roman contexts. Drawing from extensive scholarly work featuring contemporary hermeneutics the article challenges the thesis that same-sex relationships are the point of prohibitions. It concludes that the background of Ancient Near East and Greco-Roman worldview do not allow for anachronistic extrapolations of contemporary notions of gender and sexuality into the heart of …

Microfísicas De La Vida Queer: Sexualidad Y Fe En Intersección, Hugo Córdova Quero, Jorge A. Aquino Ph.D.

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This third issue of the Queer Connection: Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Queer Theologies focuses on advancing both the state of the art of queer theories, theologies, and pastorals, as well as the possibilities of future perspectives. The importance of the "religious" in the contributions of this issue bases on the need to connect with elements that make up everyday life - spirituality, rituals, practices, discourses, among others - that are often "excluded" from the discussions about what is queer in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Church On The March: Sexual And Gender Dissidents In The Struggle For Embodied Political Rights, Ana Ester Pádua Freire Dec 2020

Church On The March: Sexual And Gender Dissidents In The Struggle For Embodied Political Rights, Ana Ester Pádua Freire

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

The relations between Christianity, sexual/gender dissidents, and civil rights of LGBTIQ+ people constitute an essential field of analysis considering Brazilian religious conservatism’s upsurge. The tensions evoked by these political actors within the public space reveal art as a mechanism for sexual /gender dissidents' visibility. Artivism —perceived as political liturgy— subverts precarity. This article investigates the Metropolitan Community Church of Belo Horizonte’s participation in the «III March against LGBTphobia» in Minas Gerais in 2016. The public presence of an affirming Christian community reveals that religious and political artivism reconfigures the public space.

The Evolutionary Global Vision Of Chinese Political Philosophy; China's Socio-Economic Transformation In The 21st Century, Meryem Gurel

Master's Projects and Capstones

Evolving relations of East Asia due to trade liberalization raised the search for financial stability for institutional development. It also increased the importance of China integrating the global economy into renewing its political philosophy in the new century. This capstone project aims to examine why China has transformed its socio-economic structure by generating outward investments and how it has affected international political relations in terms of the role of the economic institution Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Quantitative methodology aims to examine the impact of China’s export trade on income distribution and economic growth through linear regression analysis for the …

Revisiting The History Of The De Doctrina Christiana Authorship Debate And Its Ramifications For Milton Scholarship: A Response To Falcone And Kerr, David V. Urban Dec 2020

Revisiting The History Of The De Doctrina Christiana Authorship Debate And Its Ramifications For Milton Scholarship: A Response To Falcone And Kerr, David V. Urban

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This essay details the history of the De Doctrina Christiana authorship controversy, suggesting that the debate’s conclusion in favor of Miltonic provenance was declared prematurely. It considers Falcone’s and Kerr’s recent essays in light of the larger controversy and proposes that one consequence of the larger debate should be the liberty for scholars to analyze Milton’s theological presentations in his poetry apart from the specter of DDC.

In Studying The History Of Uzbek Music Culture The Place Of The Bayoz, Khumoyun Khaydarov Dec 2020

In Studying The History Of Uzbek Music Culture The Place Of The Bayoz, Khumoyun Khaydarov

Eurasian music science journal

In many branches of musicology, especially in covering information on the issue of macom, scientific works, brochures, and various handwritten sources are mainly used. It is noteworthy that today bays also serves as a necessary source for studying music, especially our traditional music. In addition, it should be noted that bayez is effectively used in the “Ustoz - shogird” (Teacher-Pupil) education system, and plays a special role in the formation of the curriculum and the performance of singing. The article discusses the above points.

Religion And Rural Internationalism In The Nineteenth-Century Middle West: The Global Consciousness Of Rural Dutch Middle Westerners,1865–1901, Andrew Klumpp Dec 2020

Religion And Rural Internationalism In The Nineteenth-Century Middle West: The Global Consciousness Of Rural Dutch Middle Westerners,1865–1901, Andrew Klumpp

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

This project asks: How did underlying religious worldviews inform the local, national, and global engagement of rural middle western Dutch communities in the nineteenth century, which are often characterized as isolated and provincial? More broadly, it queries, if the local, national, and global are united by this broad religious worldview, how does that transform our understandings of rural middle western ethnic enclaves and who contributed to the rich internationalism of the nineteenth century and from where?

Close examination of these rural middle western ethnic enclaves reveals not only an ambitious vision for building local institutions but also for extending Dutch …

Religion Wrecked Her Mind: Religious Insanity In The Nineteenth Century, Courtney Lacy Dec 2020

Religion Wrecked Her Mind: Religious Insanity In The Nineteenth Century, Courtney Lacy

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I analyze how the line between good and bad religions, as constructed through secularism, influenced whether or not practitioners of religion were sent to insane asylums or, at least, considered by their peers or family to be at risk of insanity or on the brink of it. Exploring these questions revealed the link between religion and insanity but also showed how some religious practices (especially ecstatic behavior) placed believers at even greater risk because of the threat to the secular and progressive narrative encouraged by the people around them.

By placing the asylum narrative in conversation with …

The Grace And Leigh Oral History Project, Spencer Law Dec 2020

The Grace And Leigh Oral History Project, Spencer Law

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

At a critical time in examining the bias of our institutions, the Grace and Leigh Oral History Project is collecting and archiving stories of three educational institutions in Richmond, Virginia. These oral history interviews share personal experiences with race and privilege in Richmond Public Schools, the experiment of the Virginia Governor's School initiative, and the legacy of Maggie Lena Walker. An accompanying contextual essay provides background on the author’s personal connection to the project, relevant historical information, and detailed plans for the future of the project. Currently, the project includes a total of 24 oral history interviews, roughly an hour …

The Political Theory Of The Latin American Independence Movement, Sarah H. Welsch Dec 2020

The Political Theory Of The Latin American Independence Movement, Sarah H. Welsch

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

This project explores the historical context from which four Latin American political theorists emerged in the 19th century and analyzes the extent to which they promoted the liberal ideal of equality in the governments they worked to establish. Mariano Moreno, José de San Martín, Simón Bolívar, and Agustín de Iturbide played central roles in the Latin American independence movement and the establishment of government institutions in the years that followed. I demonstrate that each theorist neglected to include large swaths of society in their discussions of equality while advocating for systems of governance from which they would personally benefit.

The study investigated the effect of a job applicant’s gender identity (male or female) and gender history (cisgender or transgender) on the evaluated quality of the applicant and the likelihood of the applicant being hired for a vacant software engineer position. Participants from the worker pool of Amazon’s Mechanical Turk evaluated the quality of a fictitious job applicant based on a mock resume and background check created for the purposes of this study, then completed the Social Dominance Orientation. There was no significant effect of gender identity or gender history on the evaluated quality of the job applicant or on …

The Impact Of Cultural Heritage On Japanese Towns And Villages, Yuichiro Tsuji Dr. Dec 2020

The Impact Of Cultural Heritage On Japanese Towns And Villages, Yuichiro Tsuji Dr.

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

In 1954, when historically significant clays and clay pots were found in the Iba district of Shizuoka prefecture, the city applied to the prefectural education committee for a historic site designation. The committee granted this designation to the city..

However, in 1973 the education committee lifted its permission to promote development around the location. Historians have sought revocation of this decision under the Administrative Case Litigation Act (ACLA), but the Supreme Court has denied standing. By denying standing, the Japanese Supreme Court allows the prefecture to destroy a historical site.

First, this paper seeks to discuss the doctrine of standing …
