Finding Common Ground For Citizen Empowerment In The Smart City, John D. Kelleher, Aphra Kerr Jan 2020

Finding Common Ground For Citizen Empowerment In The Smart City, John D. Kelleher, Aphra Kerr

Articles

Corporate smart city initiatives are just one example of the contemporary culture of surveillance. They rely on extensive information gathering systems and Big Data analysis to predict citizen behaviour and optimise city services. In this paper we argue that many smart city and social media technologies result in a paradox whereby digital inclusion for the purposes of service provision also results in marginalisation and disempowerment of citizens. Drawing upon insights garnered from a digital inclusion workshop conducted in the Galapagos islands, we propose that critically and creatively unpacking the computational techniques embedded in data services is needed as a first …

Doolin: History And Memories, Kevin M. Griffin, Kevin A. Griffin, Brendan J. Griffin

Books / Book chapters

This book is about growing up in Doolin, County Clare, Ireland in the 1940s. It is based heavily on the author’s memories and recollections, reinforced and supported by historical and archival research. Contained herein are a variety of stories and memories, tales and yarns, all documenting a way of life that is now only found in the folklore and historic records of ‘old Ireland’.

Slasher Films And Self-Harm: A Relationship Of Self-Hatred And Trauma, Stevie Lee Steers

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This paper’s purpose is to look at slasher films and the potential relationship of trauma and self-hatred that these films hold to adolescents aged 14-20 who commit self-harm. The type of self-harm examined in this paper is cutting and the films that will be studied will have to be from 1979 to 1989, which is the “golden age” for slasher films. The films that will be studied are The Nightmare on Elm Street series, Hellraiser series, and Friday the 13th series. This paper will be using multiple literary lenses to discuss how slasher films convey trauma and self-hatred and how …

Art At The Service Of Prayer: The Immaculate Conception Chapel, Lawrence Frizzell Jan 2020

Art At The Service Of Prayer: The Immaculate Conception Chapel, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

More than four decades ago, Father Philip Rotunno founded the Good Shepherd Community at Seton Hall University, bringing families associated with his work as the first Director of Campus Ministry together with the immigrant Catholic families living in the Ivy Hill Apartments. In 1990, I took on the challenge of priestly ministry in collaboration with the well-formed group of lay leaders. The present series of essays on the pedagogical insights offered by Seton Hall's Immaculate Conception Chapel Chapel was prompted by questions of the Good Shepherd children. As I explained the elements of Catholic worship fostered by the architecture and art …

Attending To Conditions That Facilitate Intercultural Competence: A Reciprocal Service-Learning Approach, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Sharon Tjaden-Glass, Novea A. Mcintosh Jan 2020

Attending To Conditions That Facilitate Intercultural Competence: A Reciprocal Service-Learning Approach, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Sharon Tjaden-Glass, Novea A. Mcintosh

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Although service-learning can support the development of intercultural competence, it has also maintained power differentials, reinforced privileged perspectives, and strengthened deficit thinking. Recent research has investigated the conditions within service-learning associated with positive change in diversity-related attitudes. We extend that work, conceptualizing a reciprocal service-learning (RSL) approach that integrates conditions posited by contact theory and the process model of intercultural competence into service-learning’s core features of reflection and reciprocity. In an RSL approach, transformational reciprocity at the participant level supports cultural awareness, interdependence, and parity between participant groups. We created an RSL experience and measured change in three attitudes fundamental …

Texte Im Spiegel Der Zeit: Die Methode Der Wirklichkeitsmontage In Alexander Kluges Dezember, Ann-Kathrin Latter

Performing Near Field Acoustic Holography Scans For The Purpose Of Finding The Acoustic Impedance Of A Violin, Zamara Tomko Jan 2020

Performing Near Field Acoustic Holography Scans For The Purpose Of Finding The Acoustic Impedance Of A Violin, Zamara Tomko

Student Research, Papers, and Creative Works

This project aimed to measure the acoustic impedance of the violin so that the violin can be better understood from an acoustic standpoint. Near field acoustic holography scans are to be conducted at the open A string resonance of the violin (440 Hz). Pressure microphones along the back plate of the violin allow pressure and particle velocity to be measured, and with that, the acoustic impedance to be calculated and mapped in 1 cm x 1cm increments. This work presents a guide for this procedure. The set-up method and materials used are detailed and the analysis and computations of values …

Playing On The Map: An Educational Game From The Age Of Revolutions, Emily C. Bruce, Elise Klarenbeek Jan 2020

Playing On The Map: An Educational Game From The Age Of Revolutions, Emily C. Bruce, Elise Klarenbeek

History Publications

This object lesson explores a German geography board game produced during the years around 1800, The Journey from Prague to Vienna. Its spatial orientation, colorful narration, and gameplay help us understand how middle-class German-speaking children were situated socially and politically on a map. Within a world rife with territorial instability and emerging nationalisms, this object taught bourgeois youth that they shared in an imagined German cultural identity. In this way, The Journey from Prague to Vienna links the history of play with the politicization of children’s education.

When The Worst People Are The Best Rhetoricians: (Mis)Using Rhetoric In C. S. Lewis’S The Last Battle, Gary L. Tandy Jan 2020

When The Worst People Are The Best Rhetoricians: (Mis)Using Rhetoric In C. S. Lewis’S The Last Battle, Gary L. Tandy

Faculty Publications - Department of English

In discussing John Milton’s manipulation of the reader in Paradise Lost, C. S. Lewis comments generally on the art of rhetoric: “I do not think (and no great civili-zation has ever thought) that the art of the rhetorician is necessarily vile. It is in itself noble, though of course, like most arts, it can be wickedly used” (53). From comments in his letters and essays, we know that Lewis thought frequently about his own work as a Christian apologist, concerned that he pursue truth in his arguments rather than trying to win an argument at all costs. In fact, he …
