Residential Segregation And Rethinking The Imperative Of Integration, Ronald R. Sundstrom Jan 2020

Residential Segregation And Rethinking The Imperative Of Integration, Ronald R. Sundstrom

Philosophy

In this chapter I consider the place of the topic of racial and ethnic urban residential segregation factors into political philosophy. I begin with a short history of residential segregation and the ghetto, and their role in systems of racial domination and oppression, and remarks on the general neglect of this topic in contemporary political philosophy, including in nonideal political philosophy, which proports to take on examples of real-world injustices and inequalities. I then examine, from the standpoint of liberal-egalitarian political theory, what segregation, as a con- cept, entails, and its harms to individuals, communities, and societies. Segregation in all …

Somewhere I'Ve Never Been: Part 2, John Lanci Jan 2020

Somewhere I'Ve Never Been: Part 2, John Lanci

JRCA Pedagogy

In the first part of this essay, I suggested that teaching during a pandemic, while challenging and often uncomfortable in its remoteness, offers us the chance to re-examine all of the teaching we do, even in the good times. What if we focused less on content delivery, such as lectures, and instead attempted to explore methods of “deep learning,” a collaborative endeavor that would foster students’ abilities to evaluate, contextualize, and take ownership of their time in the classroom (or the Zoom gallery)? We scholars may feel most alive when immersed in the second or third centuries of the common …

Motum Dei Immobilis: In Defense Of Aquinas’S Doctrine Of Divine Immutability, J. Elias Stone

Theology Undergraduate Work

Ever since the advent of Enlightenment Rationalism, Protestant Christianity has seen significant modifications to its intellectual approaches to philosophy and theology. Many core beliefs about the nature of God and the world have undergone radical revision, as is particularly evidenced by the genesis of theo-philosophical systems such as Process Theism. Within Evangelicalism, these ideas have become particularly widespread, with popular authors such as Gregory Boyd and scholars such as William Lane Craig and the up-and-coming R. T. Mullins subscribing, in whole or in part, to these post-Enlightenment doctrines. In this article, I offer a criticism of these modern developments in …

Linguistic Politeness In The Chinese Language And Culture, Horng-Yi Lee Jan 2020

Linguistic Politeness In The Chinese Language And Culture, Horng-Yi Lee

Modern Languages

This paper aims to explore the cultural foundations of polite speech and analyze its usage and practice in modern Chinese. A language mirrors the culture it is associated with. Grounded in the Chinese tradition and the teachings of Confucianism, the emphasis on rites, propriety and humility led to the development of polite language from the early imperial time. Because of the absence of related syntactic features, Chinese linguistic politeness is predominantly manifested on the lexical level. A rich array of decorous terms and expressions has been evolved accordingly to express courtesy or respect either verbally or in formal writing. In …

Cockney Dialect Group Report, Trent Garlin

English Department: Linguistics ENG 334

When many people think of a British accent two distinct types typically come to mind, an overly posh royal family type accent, or an Oliver Twist Cockney accent. However, the Cockney dialect is a lot more complicated and interesting than simply dropping the ‘h’ and ‘t’ from the English language, and this report will explore the history of the dialect as well as the phonology, the morphology and its syntax.
