Size Matters: The Values Behind Basque Food, Font And Semiotics, Kerri Lesh
Size Matters: The Values Behind Basque Food, Font And Semiotics, Kerri Lesh
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Text production indexes a set of values as semiotics are utilized to market gastronomic products. These values are referenced through the language used, various font styles and sizes, and the food being promoted. The Basque Country has become a “Culinary nation,” world-renowned for its unique culture and gastronomy. This paper looks at how semiotics are used to create value in marketing locally-made wine and cider. A ubiquitously seen Basque font is used for both cider and wine to reference traditional components of Basque culture, while font size on Rioja Alavesa wine labels stresses the distinction between neighboring regions. The use …
Basque Radical Rock: The Punk Ethos In Basque Identity, Edurne Arostegui
Basque Radical Rock: The Punk Ethos In Basque Identity, Edurne Arostegui
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
This paper aims to chart the origins of the so-called Basque Radical Rock movement and its varied use by different social groups, from political organizations of the time to anarchist, marginalized youth needing to express the pessimistic view of their present circumstances. Basque Radical Rock represented a growing sense of modern Basqueness and difference that shaped the scene, moving away from pastoral images toward urban decadence. Although politics did influence the growth and spread of music throughout the Basque Country, many did not feel represented by these causes. The youth’s backlash against socio-economic conditions and their nihilistic view of the …
Silence And Invisibility As Weapons Of Hegemonic Nationalism In Fernando Aramburu's Patria, Olga Bezhanova
Silence And Invisibility As Weapons Of Hegemonic Nationalism In Fernando Aramburu's Patria, Olga Bezhanova
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Fernando Aramburu’s Patria (2016) has undoubtedly constituted one of the most explosive publishing successes of Spain’s literary market of the recent years. The author depicts Basque nationalism as a flawed product deriving from irrational violent impulses that supposedly lie at the core of the Basque identity, while privileging a hegemonic Castilian nationalism. Aramburu’s perspective, however, is tainted by his geographic and affective distancing from Euskadi, which arises not only from the fact that he has been living in Germany since 1985 but also from his identity as an author who writes only in Spanish. His novel misses the mark, as …

Weaving Forms Of Resistance: The Museo De La Solidaridad And The Museo Internacional De La Resistencia Salvador Allende, Carla Macchiavello Cornejo
Weaving Forms Of Resistance: The Museo De La Solidaridad And The Museo Internacional De La Resistencia Salvador Allende, Carla Macchiavello Cornejo
Publications and Research
From the starting point of a 1975 artwork made by Norwegian artist Kjartan Slettemark in Sweden to stop a tennis match in resistance to the Chilean military dictatorship, this article reframes the linear image of networks of solidarity and resistance through the gaps and connectivity of a mesh. It expands the figure of the mesh taken from critical materialism into the affective realm of art, historiography, and art institutions by exploring the cases of the museums Museo de la Solidaridad (1971–1974) and Museo Internacional de la Resistencia “Salvador Allende” (1975–1990). As this article delves into various knots and lacunas of …

Performance Of Islamic Stocks Versus Conventional Stocks During Crisis And Non Crisis Period: Evidence From Mena Region., Eshraq Abou El Enein
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the performance of both Islamic and conventional stocks, and to investigate whether the Islamic filtering criteria acts as a shield of protection for investors during crisis or not, based on a panel sample of 12 countries in the MENA region covering 10 different sectors from 1998-2018. Using panel fixed effect regression. We divided out sample into three periods; 1998-2006 pre-crisis period, 2007-2008 crisis period and 2009-2018 post crisis period. Our main finding is that the filtering criteria has a positive relation with the returns significant for the post crisis period and positive …

Revealed History As Prophetic Rivalry: John’S Apocalypse, The Sibylline Oracles, And The Prophecy Of Apollo, Olivia Stewart Lester
Revealed History As Prophetic Rivalry: John’S Apocalypse, The Sibylline Oracles, And The Prophecy Of Apollo, Olivia Stewart Lester
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In dealing with the demand of Stephan Palmié, Charles Stewart and Dipesh Chakrabarty to extend the understanding of "history" to the intervention of gods, spirits or superhuman beings, the present article deals with two ancient texts, Revelation 12 and Sibling 4, which speak of the past through divine revelation. These two texts present the past in such a way that their rhetorical means at least potentially call into question the prophecies of Apollo. They refer to certain traditions that are connected with Apollo - in particular the founding myth of the Shrine of Delphi and the legends about the inspiration …
Gloria Anzaldúa’S Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados And Pachucos To New Mestizas, Mariana Alessandri, Alexander Stehn
Gloria Anzaldúa’S Mexican Genealogy: From Pelados And Pachucos To New Mestizas, Mariana Alessandri, Alexander Stehn
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This essay examines Gloria Anzaldúa’s critical appropriation of two Mexican philosophers in the writing of Borderlands/La Frontera: Samuel Ramos and Octavio Paz. We argue that although neither of these authors is cited in her seminal work, Anzaldúa had them both in mind through the writing process and that their ideas are present in the text itself. Through a genealogical reading of Borderlands/La Frontera, and aided by archival research, we demonstrate how Anzaldúa’s philosophical vision of the “new mestiza” is a critical continuation of the broader tradition known as la filosofía de lo mexicano, which flourished during a golden age of …

The Astros Et.Al., Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
In studying World War I, the American historian Bruce Catton identified a simple and ironclad rule concerning technology: What you can do, you must do. I was thinking about the current uproar over the Houston Astros’ use of technology to steal signs and I thought about Catton’s observation and how it might offer some understanding of what happened in this latest of baseball scandals.
Targeted Terror: A Historiography Of The Nazi Police State, Jordana Irzyk
Targeted Terror: A Historiography Of The Nazi Police State, Jordana Irzyk
Of Life and History
In discussions of Third Reich terror, one controversial issue has been the degree to which the ‘ordinary German’ population experienced terror, and if this terror could adequately account for the Germans’ complicity, cooperation, or collaboration with the Nazi Party. In other words, should ordinary German citizens be largely exempt from guilt of the Holocaust because they themselves lived in a state of fear of arrest, imprisonment, and death? This article explains how there existed two Nazi societies during the Third Reich, one marked by extreme terror and the other of minimal, if any, terror.
Bandera: (Re)Building Ukrainian National History, Aaron R. Wolf
Bandera: (Re)Building Ukrainian National History, Aaron R. Wolf
Of Life and History
This paper attempts to give an overview of the life of Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Bandera and his historical influence in the current political battles in Ukraine over national identity. This paper looks at the different methods that both Ukrainian and Russian media sources have used to paint Ukrainian nationalism in the wake of the Maidan Revolution in 2014 as either a positive force for reinforcing Ukrainian national identity and moving the country closer to the West, or a negative one that connects the current government and far-right political parties to the Ukrainian nationalists of Stepan Bandera who collaborated with the …
Mimicry As Movement Analysis, Rosa Abrahams
Mimicry As Movement Analysis, Rosa Abrahams
Faculty Publications
The analysis of movement to music often stems from examinations of video-recorded events. This allows the analyst an opportunity to re-watch, pause, and slow down the movements of their participants, and to produce descriptive notation that appears alongside a score (e.g., Roeder and Tenzer 2012). Unlike prescriptive forms of dance notation (e.g., Laban 1928), such transcriptions of movement often illuminate metrical connections between music and movement. However, when video-recording is not permissible, other methods of movement analysis must be developed. This paper pilots a new technique for rigorous analysis of the interaction between movement and music, which may be used …

Martin Luther King Jr. And Ernest Everett Just - On Evolution Of Ethical Behavior, Theodore Walker
Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. prescribed an evolutionary advance in ethical behavior: the total “abolition of poverty” and the abolition of war throughout “the world house.” Cell biologist Ernest Everett Just advanced the idea that human ethical behavior evolved from cellular origins.
Also, astrobiologists Chandra Wickramasinghe and Sir Fred Hoyle advanced the idea of cosmic biology, including stellar evolution and cosmic evolution. From cells to humans to stars and cosmology, evolutionary natural science converges with natural theology.
