Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Depictions Of Female Body Types In Advertising: How Regional Visual Attention, Body Region Satisfaction, Media Influence, And Drive For Thinness Relate, Dallin Russell Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Through continuing technological advancement, increased media exposure occurs as consumers are able to obtain access more easily. Various media formats, including video, are a means whereby consumers gather information about the world around them, and continually make comparisons between that information and themselves. Among the information obtained from media channels is how bodies are portrayed in the media. Comparisons between media images of body and self-perceptions of body are particularly prevalent in women. The current study employs the use of eye-tracking to examine how women view other women's body types and areas of the body in video-based advertising. The study …

Building A Bridge To Community Creating Belonging By Intentionally Incorporating Christians Into The Life Of The Congregation, Michele Doel

Master of Art Theology Thesis

Doel, Michele, M. “Building a Bridge to Community: Creating Belonging by Intentionally Incorporating Christians into the Life of the Congregation.” Master’s thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2020. 86 pp.

How simple is it for a new member to become incorporated into the life of your church? There is a creational need for all humans to have a sense of belonging to God and to those around them. This human need for relationships and community means that congregations should be experts at involving people and building up their relationships with one another. This thesis builds off the author’s experience as an intern at …

Ce Que Le Mirage Doit À L’Oasis De Yasmina Khadra: Comment Devient-On Enfant Du Sahara ?, Brigitte Tsobgny

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose Mar 2020

Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will dis sect the power dynamics of the built environment at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) as it relates to spatial representation for minorities on campus. By observing campus growth throughout the university’s history through the lenses of campus minorities, including women, black students, queer students, and disabled students, a pattern of dismissal and reluctanct compliance comes to light. While the administration’s rhetoric often reflects goals of inclusivity and diversity, the architectural history of Cal Poly reflects a lack of investment and reaction to the concerns of student minorities.

Cal Poly Students Struggle For Gay Rights, Dio Capilla

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper follows the gay rights movement at Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo through the 1970s. Cal Poly’s Gay Students Union (GSU) was first proposed in 1972, but had to undergo a series of legal battles before Cal Poly administration finally granted the organization official school recognition four years later. University President Robert E. Kennedy only signed the Union’s bylaws under the direct advisory of the State Attorney General. Kennedy claimed his opposition to the club was only for legal reasons, but this claim did not hold up against previous statements made by the administration. Further discrimination was faced …

World War Ii And Its Impact On Cal Poly: Enrollment And Learn By Doing, Willie Kirschner

The Creation Of The Cal Poly Architecture Department And The Decline Of Multi-Disciplinary Education, Annie Martinez Mar 2020

The Creation Of The Cal Poly Architecture Department And The Decline Of Multi-Disciplinary Education, Annie Martinez

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The creation of the architecture department spurred the decline of multidisciplinary education among the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). This development led to the separation and hierarchy of majors within CAED as it destroyed the communal nature of an experimental and innovative teaching approach. The process of this change reveals the detrimental impacts to the faculty, curriculum and culture of the department. The faculty was divided, leading to a less interdisciplinary curriculum and a less communal nature of innovative learning among the College community.

Historical Issues In Cal Poly’S Fraternities, Vincent Mejia Mar 2020

Historical Issues In Cal Poly’S Fraternities, Vincent Mejia

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In recent years, fraternities have grown exponentially at Cal Poly and have served many good purposes on campus. However, from the time of its inception in 1949 until now, there existed a great many problems. Much of the research that exists depicts the negative aspects of fraternities, such as hazing, rape, and racial antagonism. Cal Poly itself has also experienced similar issues throughout the course of its history. Hazing has been an issue at Cal Poly since before any Greek organization was on campus. It is easy to see how that behavior transitioned over once fraternities began arising. An early …

Cal Poly And Wwii: A Time Of Change, Matthew Schivo Mar 2020

Cal Poly And Wwii: A Time Of Change, Matthew Schivo

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of World War II on higher education, specifically California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. WWII completely changed the dynamics of the school from the years 1939-1946 bringing in various federal programs as well as Naval programs to help support the school during financial hardship. Although the changes were not always liked by the students, or by the faculty and staff, they were necessary to keep Cal Poly up and running. Similar processes were happening at other colleges around the country as many of them faced similar financial problems as …

Forgotten Opposition: Cal Poly Reactions To American Imperialism In The 1980s, Cooper Lock

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The Reagan Administration employed aggressive rhetoric in combating the supposed spread of communism in Latin America during the 1980s. The El Salvador ruling party’s fight against the leftist Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front became a hotspot for United States foreign aid and involvement. Extensive amounts of money poured into the region, inciting equally extensive disapproval and distrust from the American people. The reactions to these events at a national level have been extensively covered, whereas university students’ have been left relatively in the dark. This paper analyzes Cal Poly reactions and responses to United States foreign policy throughout the decade. …

The Great Depression And Its Effects On Cal Poly: As Compared To Other Higher Educational Institutions Across The Nation, Daniel Verbera

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

Then California Polytechnic School did not fare well under the years of the Great Depression and under President Crandall. Cal Poly was in steep decline and eventually Crandall resigned during the peak of the economic crisis. However, President McPhee took over and brought with him a complete overhaul of the school into a vocational college. Not only did McPhee bring Cal Poly out of the Depression, but he expanded the college as well in terms of funding, projects, and buildings. By the advent of World War Two Cal Poly failed as an institution only in having been unable to supply …

A Call To Relational Leadership Arising From A Shared Eschatalogical Vision, Skip Bell, Gyeongchun Choi, Stanley E. Patterson, David K. Penno

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

The book of Revelation contrasts two distinct approaches to leadership. This article describes these approaches and concludes how Christians should practice leadership today. The two approaches are traced from the rebellion in heaven, through creation, and the life of Jesus, with a focus on Scripture’s apocalyptic messages. This study is needed because leadership in the church profoundly affects the church’s witness and accomplishment of mission. Faithfulness among God’s people in the last days can only be experienced when leadership is practiced according to God-honoring principles. This article concludes that the loving, non-coercive, relational dynamic—demonstrated by the Lamb’s leading during the …

The Challenge Of Just-In-Time Teaching (Jitt): A Case Study In Music Education Pedagogy, Nicholas Batcher

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

It is nine o’clock in the morning in my “Intro to Music Education” classroom. The students enter the class room and begin to almost immediately begin debating important current trends in music education. Topics range from making sure music classrooms utilize a diverse range of repertoire (music) and literature; to LGBTQ+ students in the classroom; to teaching music to students with special needs; to the efficient use of technology in the music classroom. This is not your typical “sage from the stage” lecture. These students are actively participating and engaged from the moment class begins, and as the class continues, …

Furthermore, the study concluded that stipulating that the leasing contract is automatically renewed contradicts …
