What If The Arts Were Taken Away?, Joseph S. Pizzo Apr 2020

What If The Arts Were Taken Away?, Joseph S. Pizzo

New Jersey English Journal

The arts give clarity to their emotions, situations, questions, and lives. Students experiencing all the arts gain a comprehensive perspective. Lyndon B. Johnson observed: “(I)t is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation.”

Beyond Man Vs. Nature: Utilizing Book Clubs On Nature And Climate Change To Create Engaged Citizens Of The Anthropocene, Shannon Falkner, Ryan Skardal

New Jersey English Journal

In this article, we consider the following question: "What’s next for ELA? Over the next 10 years, how will our students change? How might we need to change? Which traditions and practices will (or should) grow obsolete, and which should be preserved?" Our aim is to help teachers find ways to bring "climate literacy" into their classrooms and to help teachers recognize the central role that ELA as a discipline can play in educating students about the environment and climate change. We see this topic as highly engaging for students, and we want teachers to reconsider and reanimate older approaches …

The Roman Dogma Of Animal Breeding: “Bark”Aeological Findings Reveal The Effects Of Selective Pressures On Roman Dogs, Ariane Akhand Apr 2020

The Roman Dogma Of Animal Breeding: “Bark”Aeological Findings Reveal The Effects Of Selective Pressures On Roman Dogs, Ariane Akhand

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Animals as a whole are often overlooked when studying ancient Rome, but there is one animal that even Roman authors of farming guides often dismissed as being insignificant; this animal being the dog. The Romans kept dogs for many purposes; such as for hunting game, protecting a flock of sheep, guarding the house, and providing companionship. The authors of Roman farming guides often provided guidelines as to which characteristics were ideal for each type of working dog, but are these ideal characteristics reflected in the reality of Roman dogs? I set out to conclude to what extent the Romans influenced …

When The Beat Drops: Exploring Hip Hop, Home And Black Masculinity, Marquese Lamont Mcferguson Apr 2020

When The Beat Drops: Exploring Hip Hop, Home And Black Masculinity, Marquese Lamont Mcferguson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this autoethnographic dissertation, I take readers on a narrative journey to three of my storied homeplaces and explore my lived experiences within each site. In the process of exploring my homeplaces, I analyze how I perform my black masculine self within the context of each location, how my cultural body supports and challenges hegemonic black masculinity, and how each location constrains and frees up my performance of self. With this dissertation, I will contribute to the field of communication studies by extending the method and writing practice of autoethnography, the theorization of the black masculine, and the exploration of …

The Russo-Japanese War: Origins And Implications, Benjamin E. Mainardi Apr 2020

The Russo-Japanese War: Origins And Implications, Benjamin E. Mainardi

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

The 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War was the first major conflict of the twentieth century and a turning point in the balance of power in East Asia. In the short term, Russia’s defeat helped precipitate the 1905 Russian Revolution and the 1917 October Revolution. More broadly, the aftermath of the war informed Japan’s imperial ambitions in Manchuria—the early stages of World War II in Asia during the 1930s—and continuing Russo-Japanese enmity over Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Island chain. Studying this historical conflict in terms of international relations provides valuable insights into the nature of the conflict and how the past continues …

A Partial Presence Is No Presence: Public History Institutions And The Danger Of Social Media, Alex Warren Apr 2020

A Partial Presence Is No Presence: Public History Institutions And The Danger Of Social Media, Alex Warren

Graduate Student Research Symposium

243.6 million people use social media in the United States alone: that is roughly ¾ of the population.[1] This massive audience gives the perception that, especially for smaller public history organizations, it is a simple and effective tool to reach their audiences. But this may not be the case. Although social media provides an opportunity to put forth information to a wide public audience in a way that would otherwise be near impossible for many non-profit organizations, the reality of a successful social media presence provides potentially catastrophic results for an unprepared organization.

Effective social media use requires consideration …

Appropriating The Comanche: Hell Or High Water And The New Southwest, Douglas E. Green Apr 2020

Appropriating The Comanche: Hell Or High Water And The New Southwest, Douglas E. Green

Faculty Authored Articles

Hell or High Water (2016) takes the elegiac mode – the wistful lament for the myth of the Old West – and recasts it as a raucous country song on the dismantling of that myth by twenty-first-century capitalism. In the wake of the Great Recession, director David Mackenzie and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan pair off two iconic sets of Western characters: a couple of down-and-out bank-robbing brothers shadowed by an old, White Texas Ranger and his American-Indian/Mex- ican-American deputy. The values of the lawmen and the outlaw brothers are not mutually exclusive – each pair shares more with the other than …

Settler Colonial Disease And Dis-Ease In August: Osage County, M. Elise Marubbio Apr 2020

Settler Colonial Disease And Dis-Ease In August: Osage County, M. Elise Marubbio

Faculty Authored Articles

Tracy Letts’s screenplay, August: Osage County (2013), and John Wells’s film adaptation (2013) offer a compelling critique of American racism towards Native Americans which demands that viewers consider their own inculcation into ongoing settler-nation colonialism. The film layers the history of place (Oklahoma) with the Cheyenne character Johnna, whose Indigenous heritage is negotiated throughout by liberal academics, conservative rural matriarchs, and Johnna herself. The role is small but essential to the film’s allegorical analysis of settler-colonialism and racism. The Weston family’s secrets, addictions, and dysfunction starkly contrast with Johnna’s health and stability. Through Johnna, the film questions the toll colonialism …

Degeneration Of Settler Colonialism In Contemporary Cinematic Depictions Of The U.S. West: Introduction, M. Elise Marubbio, Marek Paryż, Matthew Carter Apr 2020

Degeneration Of Settler Colonialism In Contemporary Cinematic Depictions Of The U.S. West: Introduction, M. Elise Marubbio, Marek Paryż, Matthew Carter

Faculty Authored Articles

The settler’s situation is underpinned by the fear of having been caught in a process of endless transition, hence the determination to define the parameters of collective sovereignty and to establish a satisfactory existential basis. The sense of uncertainty that underlies the settler’s situation accounts for the necessity of developing power structures that sustain the settler collective’s striving to complete its design, and this triggers a range of conflicts. Repeatedly addressing the eponymous region’s legacy of settler colonialism, film depictions of the American West re-inscribe oppression of racial minorities, sexual abuse, and class exploitation in order to validate the foundational …

Evangelicals And Roman Catholic Spirituality, Daniel L. Brunner Apr 2020

Evangelicals And Roman Catholic Spirituality, Daniel L. Brunner

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

After almost twenty-five years of teaching at an evangelical seminary in the Pacific Northwest I am seeing an emerging interest in and hunger for Catholic spirituality and mysticism among many of our students, both at the master’s and doctor of ministry levels. It is exciting to see spirituality as a conduit for Roman Catholic – Evangelical ecumenism and dialogue.

Schnittke, Gubaidulina, And Pärt: Religion And Spirituality During The Late Thaw And Early Perestroika, Aleksandra Drozzina

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation explores the music of three major Soviet composers—Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Arvo Pärt—against the backdrop of the ever-changing Soviet rule (after Stalin’s death in 1953). I reevaluate the composers’ religious and spiritual beliefs expressed in their works during the 1970s–1980s. Three works are presented as case studies and analyzed in-depth: Schnittke’s Concerto for Choir (1984–85), Gubaidulina’s Sieben Worte (1982), and Pärt’s Stabat Mater (1985). Although under Nikita Khrushchev’s rule (1953–64), governmental censorship began to slowly loosen, this particular group of composers continued to experience a considerable degree of oppression and censorship from the Soviet government until and …

How Governor Thomas Ford's Background, Choices, And Actions Influenced The Martyrdom Of Joseph Smith In Carthage Jail, Stuart Rulan Black Apr 2020

How Governor Thomas Ford's Background, Choices, And Actions Influenced The Martyrdom Of Joseph Smith In Carthage Jail, Stuart Rulan Black

Theses and Dissertations

Thomas Ford was the governor of Illinois at the time of Joseph and Hyrum Smiths’ martyrdoms in Carthage Jail in 1844. Before his tenure as governor, Ford’s professional life included service as an attorney and judge throughout Illinois. His background in the legal field gave him a unique perspective which may have influenced his career as governor of Illinois from 1842-1846. Although Governor Ford is relatively well-known for his association with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its history, his background and the bearing it had on the martyrdom of the Smiths has received relatively little attention …

Writing After The Human: Marie Darrieussecq’S And Anne Garréta’S Posthumanisms, Annabel L. Kim Apr 2020

Writing After The Human: Marie Darrieussecq’S And Anne Garréta’S Posthumanisms, Annabel L. Kim

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

In our current moment of climate catastrophe and impending planetary doom, the posthuman seems like a harbinger of an all too imminent reality (felt especially keenly in the age of COVID-19). In the twenty-first century, the humanities, grappling with the multifarious failures and excesses of traditional humanism, are attempting to abandon the anthropocentric epistemologies and practices that have characterized Western thought and culture and to create new models for thinking the world—models that are able to accommodate the nonhuman and welcome other forms of life and matter as objects of focus, moving thus from an imperialist vertical mode of conquering …

La Dimension Cinématographique Du Paysage Dans L’Œuvre Littéraire De Julien Gracq, El Arbi El Bakkali Apr 2020

La Dimension Cinématographique Du Paysage Dans L’Œuvre Littéraire De Julien Gracq, El Arbi El Bakkali

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

“Nous Étions Ici Pour Durer”: Memorialization And Environmental Advocacy In Véronique Tadjo’S En Compagnie Des Hommes, Marda Messay Apr 2020

“Nous Étions Ici Pour Durer”: Memorialization And Environmental Advocacy In Véronique Tadjo’S En Compagnie Des Hommes, Marda Messay

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

Detected for the first time in 1976 in Northern Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) and in Southern Sudan (now South Sudan), the Ebola virus has reemerged periodically mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The deadliest outbreak of Ebola occurred in Guinea, eventually spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone from 2014-2016. At the end, there were 28, 652 cases and 11, 325 deaths (cdc.gov). The outbreak generated international news coverage and sparked panic, especially once cases were reported in the U.S., in Spain and in the UK. It also incited Veronique Tadjo’s latest work, En compagnie des Hommes (2017), as she …

Intégration Du Genre Dans La Gestion Des Ressources En Eau Au Maroc (Nord-Ouest D’Afrique), El-Mostafa Mili Apr 2020

Intégration Du Genre Dans La Gestion Des Ressources En Eau Au Maroc (Nord-Ouest D’Afrique), El-Mostafa Mili

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

Prosthetic Ontology Into Pedagogy: Applying Garoian’S Theory To The Performing Arts, Elise L. Kieffer Phd Apr 2020

Prosthetic Ontology Into Pedagogy: Applying Garoian’S Theory To The Performing Arts, Elise L. Kieffer Phd

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Prosthetic pedagogy, as developed by Charles Garoian, provides a framework for using artificial-real worlds created by the arts to influence and impact teaching practice. The prosthetic space is artificial, separate, from the artist and audience, yet it is felt authentically, as if it were part of their being. Garoian explored prosthetic pedagogy through visual arts and museum experiences. This research further examines prosthetic pedagogy by applying it the Theatre. The art of theatre builds worlds onstage and through performance that allow performers to be and exist apart from their physical selves in the realm of prosthetic reality. The artist and …

Building A Foundation: Lessons From Vygotsky Applied In Appalachia, Elise L. Kieffer Phd Apr 2020

Building A Foundation: Lessons From Vygotsky Applied In Appalachia, Elise L. Kieffer Phd

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Before I knew anything about learning theories, I was a constructivist. I am not completely sure why my methods so perfectly followed this learning theory, but one sure reason, comes directly from my discipline. In my own study of musical theatre, I experienced constructivist instruction. This article follows an autoethnographic reflection of constructivism at work in and through me as I taught in a small community in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.

Painted Nails: The Gender(Ed) Performance Of Queer Sexuality, Justin Rudnick Apr 2020

Painted Nails: The Gender(Ed) Performance Of Queer Sexuality, Justin Rudnick

Communication Studies Department Publications

In this essay, I interrogate my own experiences performing my queer identity through my painted nails. I attest to the ways queer bodies might performatively challenge and/or reinforce rigid norms of sexuality through mundane performances of (gendered) identity. To accomplish this, I engage in an autoethnographic exploration of queer performativity. I recount and analyze a series of anecdotes that illustrate how performances of queer identity in everyday life are accomplished—and policed—in mundane situations. In turn, I reflexively investigate the ways in which these performances situate me within a nexus of aesthetic, embodied, and ethical social interaction and performative resistance. I …

Magic: Theory And Practice (Relg 102) Syllabus, Yvonne Patricia Chireau Apr 2020

Magic: Theory And Practice (Relg 102) Syllabus, Yvonne Patricia Chireau

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

Religion historian Owen Davies defines Magic as “the everyday employment of Religion for reasons other than spiritual enlightenment or salvation.” In this course we examine the history, theory, and meaning of Magic as a category of belief and practice intersecting with religious forms, institutions, and material cultures. Focusing on the arts of American Magic - what we will call Conjure Americana, we will look at the rise of Magic in the early modern era, from its initial formations in post Reformation European popular religion, to its expressions in English Christianity, and in colonial encounters with indigenous religions. This seminar centers …

The Reactor Room: An Immersive Chernobyl Exhibition, José Vergara Apr 2020

The Reactor Room: An Immersive Chernobyl Exhibition, José Vergara

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

The Reactor Room: An Immersive Chernobyl Exhibition is a digital installation featuring the work of students in Professor José Vergara’s course Chernobyl: Nuclear Narratives and the Environment (Spring 2020) at Swarthmore College. Students designed this interactive exhibition to facilitate public engagement with the catastrophe. Students researched topics of their own choosing and produced outward-facing digital projects that investigate diverse aspects of Chernobyl’s cultural, environmental, social, and political consequences: maps that visually trace the radioactive fallout; biographies of key figures who experienced, survived, and perpetrated one of the worst nuclear disasters in history; audio-based works that engage with the sounds, silences, …
