The study of grammatical structure in the light of the methods provided by phonology is a requirement worth consideration and scientific accompaniment of linguistic studies. Among these structures covered in this research are the structures of the nominal sentence that employs the pronoun referred to by grammarians as the chapter pronoun. The research is an attempt to obtain a new understanding of the function of this pronoun, distinct from the interpretations given by old-timers, in light of what is known in phonology as intonation or music of speech, which is considered a basic pillar and an important verbal context in …

Amid the great decline in the ceiling of freedom in the Arab countries where the media confronts a constantly deterioration situation, as stated in the 2018 report by “Reporters Without Borders”, satirical journalism seems to be a refuge for the writers to criticize their regimes indirectly and a means to avoid arrest and imprisonment. As the humor and irony in the golden age of the newspapers, were a space to express the forbidden and to state an opposition to the authority, the Internet has allowed the emergence of several media sites that provide “inaccurate and false news” on purpose to …

Recording history is an art developed by ancient nations, and continues to be used in modern and contemporary history. The historian shoulders the scientific, social, political, economic and educational responsibility in all times and places, since recording history reflects the developments of life in every city, state and nation. This is why a historian needs to be honest, truthful, well-informed and insightful. At the same time, a historian adopts a scientific methodology through which events, ideas and developments are presented in accordance with research ethics. The aim is to attain higher meanings and goals as well as noble aspirations in …

Nowadays there are many different types of family compared to 50 years ago when the ‘nuclear’ family, considered the ‘normal’ one, was the most dominant type. Affected by the advancement of many aspects, particularly technology, communication and globalization, the main changes have been changes to marriage and partnership as well as changes to children and families. In respect to changes to marriage fewer people, who are getting married later in life, are getting married nowadays with higher divorce rate. However, in regard to partnership, more couples are now living together without marriage –co-habitation with an increased number of same sex …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

In Eldorado (2006), Laurent Gaudé confronts a man from Europe with the desire for Europe directed at him, thru the characters of a Sicilian coastguard and the migrants he rescues to hand them over to the authorities in charge of turning them back. The novel, which recounts the intertwined trajectories of the Italian captain, torn apart by his contradictory functions, and a young Sudanese migrant, makes us hear the challenge addressed by Eldorado’s dream to an existence losing its meaning. The reception of the book has enhanced its humanistic scope and the author has clearly pleaded, in his public interventions, …

This has aroused the feelings of writers and poets who had a significant literary and heritage role that is characterized by the sincerity of passion and the dexterity in depicting the Nakba. The meanings that came in the poetry, and especially that of Mahmoud Darwish, who is of a Palestinian origin, have had a great impact on the Palestinian community. In his poetry, Mahmoud Darwish expresses a clear desire to form an important basis for his militant ideology, which …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

We live in a society, which is in a perpetual motion, a society focused on economy, individualism, and globalization. In the era of new technologies, the media broadcasts to us all day long events steeped in violence, atrocities of all kinds, competition, egoism, and the list goes on in view of what we suffer daily at an audiovisual level. We wonder if the values of living together, including human, ethical and moral values, are still relevant or should we believe that they are obsolete? Are we individualistic to the point of living each one at home, for oneself, without worrying …

"The response of the Nicaraguan government to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been perhaps the most erratic of any country in the world to date. Directly contradicting mitigation strategies recommended by WHO, President Daniel Ortega has refused to encourage any physical distancing measures. Vice President Rosario Murillo (Daniel Ortega's wife) instead called on thousands of sympathisers to congregate in street marches under the slogan 'love in the time of COVID-19'. By downplaying the danger of the pandemic and increasing the risk of community transmission in the second-poorest country in the western hemisphere, the Nicaraguan government is violating the …

Conceited Souls And Renaissance Cures: Sympathetic Magic Between Bodies In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Andrew Levine Apr 2020

Conceited Souls And Renaissance Cures: Sympathetic Magic Between Bodies In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Andrew Levine

Theses and Dissertations

Using the sixteenth-century theories of sympathies to examine the inter-character relationships in Hamlet, I argue for a period reading that offers insight into Hamlet’s delay and the basis for his problematic relationships with Gertrude and Ophelia. Asserting Hamlet’s character as an observer in the play with the ultimate goal of healing the infected state of Denmark, this examination of Hamlet explores how sympathetic healing would function between the characters of Hamlet, the Ghost, Gertrude, and Ophelia. Such a reading would present these characters as vulnerable bodies capable of directly affecting each other over a physical distance. Hamlet’s ultimate tragedy then …

"I Am Pamela, Her Own Self!”: Psychosocial And Moral Development In Samuel Richardson’S Pamela, Angelina Dulong Apr 2020

"I Am Pamela, Her Own Self!”: Psychosocial And Moral Development In Samuel Richardson’S Pamela, Angelina Dulong

Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines Samuel Richardson's 1740 novel Pamela through two modern models of adolescent development: moral development (Kohlberg and Turiel) and psychosocial development (Erikson, Marcia, and Luyckx et al.). It argues that the novel's eponymous heroine is a complex character who moves beyond the simple stereotypes, being neither a perfect model of feminine virtue nor a coquette on the prowl for a wealthy catch. By examining the developmental arcs Pamela experiences in the novel, it is possible to read her as a typical teenage girl who achieves virtue through errors and growth rather than a static character whose virtue (or …

Evaluation Of The Matadoc And Comparison Of Auditory Musical, Non-Musical, And Live Music Therapy Stimuli To Increase Awareness And Sense Of Self In Patients With Moderate And Severe Dementia: An Exploratory Case Study, Nicolas A. Espinoza Apr 2020

Espinoza

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The severe stage of dementia (SSD) can cause the loss of self-awareness, affecting the proper assessment, treatment, and care. The Music Therapy Assessment Tool for Awareness of Disorders of Consciousness (MATADOC) is a validated and reliable tool to measure awareness in DOC populations and it might be able to track awareness levels in people with SSD. Also, there is a need to identify effective treatments with people with SSD since pharmacological treatments have shown limited and even negative results. Both live music therapy and music listening of recorded songs have evidence of positive effects.

Purpose: The purpose of this …

Portuguese And Chinese Esl Reading Behaviors Compared: An Eye-Tracking Study, Logan Kyle Blackwell Apr 2020

Portuguese And Chinese Esl Reading Behaviors Compared: An Eye-Tracking Study, Logan Kyle Blackwell

Theses and Dissertations

While reading behaviors have been studied extensively in L1 reading studies through the use of eye-tracking and L2 reading has been measured through inherently indirect means, there is a relative lack of research done on early and late reading measures of ESL readers. Eye-tracking technology, available to researchers only in the past few decades, has opened the field to a new means of measuring these early and late measures of reading in second language learners. This study investigates the reading behaviors of 34 native Portuguese and Chinese readers who read in both their native languages (L1) and in their second …

Shuttling Between Image And Text : A Study On Bilingual Intertitles In Chinese Films, 1922-1931, Chen Wang Apr 2020

Shuttling Between Image And Text : A Study On Bilingual Intertitles In Chinese Films, 1922-1931, Chen Wang

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Almost all extant Chinese film before 1932 were equipped with both English and Chinese intertitles. Who were the writers of intertitles? What traits characterized them? How did intertitles relate to images? Did they simply repeat information provided in images or did they underscore certain messages? Alternatively, did intertitles add new meanings to moving images? Did English intertitles help foreign spectators gain a better understanding of the stories?

To answer these questions, this study investigates the bilingual intertitles in Chinese films from 1922 to 1931 by emphasizing how intertitles and their interactions with images direct spectators’ engagement with and perception of …

"Where Is My Attention?", Robin B. Levenson-Andrews Apr 2020

"Where Is My Attention?", Robin B. Levenson-Andrews

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Attention is the key to all learning. Indeed, it is what will save our lives on a daily basis. In all my Communication courses, it is one of the first things I put forward as a question that students may ask of themselves as a check on their “internal considering.”

Philosopher/practitioner George Gurdjieff (1866-1949) called the constant rumble in our minds of random condemnations and re-imaginings of past events as “internal considering.” He felt it was detrimental to ourselves and our relationships with others; it is, I maintain, a constant “self considering” that takes us away from the present and …

The International Life Of A Russian Colonial Document: The Russian-American Company, The Kashaya Pomos, The Bodega Miwoks, And The 1817 Métini Protocol, Jeffrey Glover

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In September 1817 officials of the Russian colony of Ross drafted a protocol of a meeting held with the Kashaya Pomos, the Bodega Miwoks, and other Native Americans. The protocol described how the Russians had promised gifts and military protection to their Native American allies in exchange for the right to continue occupying Métini, a Kashaya Pomo–controlled territory about eighty-five miles north of San Francisco. Soon, reports of the meeting had made their way up and down the coast and across the Pacific, as Native Americans, Russian imperial ministers, and diplomats from Russia's imperial rivals debated its significance. This essay …
