Teaching The Power Of Pictures, Rachel Speranza Apr 2020

Teaching The Power Of Pictures, Rachel Speranza

KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference

Though choosing sources that have specific copyright that allows for the reuse, modification, and redistribution of pictures is an important lesson for all students of all grade levels, what’s even a more important lesson is that of the power of social media. The perfect picture can spread like a wildfire across all social media platforms. Pictures have the power to change someone’s mood, political opinion, and even advocate for change on the other side of the world.

A Case Study Of Two Preservice Elementary Music Teachers As Culture-Bearers, Julius Kyakuwa Apr 2020

A Case Study Of Two Preservice Elementary Music Teachers As Culture-Bearers, Julius Kyakuwa

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The integration of music from unfamiliar cultures in music classrooms is part of education curriculums around the world. International music education organizations also have goals for using a variety of musics in music education programs as one way of educating students to meet the 21st century global education targets. In the American education practice, the concept and principles of multiculturalism have been prominent in classroom subjects for over 50 years. In music education, multicultural approaches continue to be included in music standards and curriculum guides across the United States. Music educators, likewise, often use culture-bearers to expose their students to …

A Hopeful Eschatology And The Role Of The Ekklesia Prior To The Parousia, Charles Graves Apr 2020

A Hopeful Eschatology And The Role Of The Ekklesia Prior To The Parousia, Charles Graves

Theology Undergraduate Work

When Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father, He did not leave the earth or abandon His mission. Rather, He gave His disciples a commission to go into all of the world and proclaim Gospel of the Kingdom to all creation (Mark 16:15). He gave them an assignment that was impossible to accomplish without the empowerment and enablement of His Spirit. While giving them such a high command, He also gave them beautiful promises about the hope of the resurrection and the coming new heavens and new earth. This future hope motivated them to engage His realities in …

Shrines And Pilgrimages: Documenting Mary's Role In The Pandemic, Kayla Harris Apr 2020

Shrines And Pilgrimages: Documenting Mary's Role In The Pandemic, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

A 1997 special report in Scientific American claimed that the average lifespan of a website was only 44 days. A study in 2001 put that at 75 days, while a 2003 article indicated 100 days. Everything on the Internet doesn’t last forever. The Marian Library has collected material related to the Blessed Virgin Mary since its founding in 1943. Increasingly, some of the material that would have once been printed, and possibly made their way to the Marian Library archives, is now being shared only electronically. Things like shrine Mass schedules, news articles, or blog posts are available on websites, …

Climate Change Adaptation In Highland Ecuador: Intersections Of Gender, Geography, And Knowledge In Farming Communities, Dinka Natali Caceres Arteaga Apr 2020

Climate Change Adaptation In Highland Ecuador: Intersections Of Gender, Geography, And Knowledge In Farming Communities, Dinka Natali Caceres Arteaga

Latin American Studies ETDs

This dissertation uses a feminist political ecology perspective to explore the socioeconomic impacts of climate change in Ecuador, especially but not limited to the agriculture sector. It is based on the use of mixed methods that allowed the participation and validation of the local population, surpassing their role as beneficiaries to co-authors of this research.

The significance of this study relies on the position the local population holds in the fields of human geography, under a community local-planning perspective, as they attempted to collaborate in the process of adaptation to climate change by presenting analysis and calculation of an index …

Woman Seeking Mother: The Heroine’S Journey In Waslala By Gioconda Belli, Karisa Saori Shiraki Apr 2020

Woman Seeking Mother: The Heroine’S Journey In Waslala By Gioconda Belli, Karisa Saori Shiraki

Theses and Dissertations

Motherhood and maternity are common themes in Nicaraguan author Gioconda Belli’s (1948–) writings, but in Waslala (2006) her exploration of the mother figure dives further into what a relationship with such a figure provides. Through a development narrative, parallel to that of female Bildungsroman and quest-romance, the protagonist, Melisandra, grows in maternal history and culture in her search for mother. This thesis uses the theories of Carol Christ, Dana Heller, Joseph Campbell and others to see Melisandra’s odyssey through the lens of a quest narrative. Along this journey, two maternal figures play an important role in preparing her for her …

Reconsidering Essence, Christopher T. Althoff Apr 2020

Reconsidering Essence, Christopher T. Althoff

Theses and Dissertations

The rhetorical core of adaptation studies is a comparison between two texts, and the type of comparison that has sparked the most reactions, whether in its use or in speaking out against it, is fidelity criticism. As David Johnson and Simone Murray point out, fidelity criticism has long been rejected as an unscholarly mode of interpretative analysis because it is caught up in subjective value judgments and imprecise conjectures of a text’s “essence.” I contend, however, that the understanding of essences is critical to understanding both fidelity and the adaptation experience because something like essence is fixed in the human …

'Seek The Eyes Of Mary': A Widow And A Virgin's Illuminating Invitation, Kristina Gayle Heiss Kryscynski

Theses and Dissertations

A deep visual analysis of Ludovico Carracci’s 1588 Madonna and Child, Angels, and Saints Francis, Dominic, Mary Magdalene and the Donor Cecilia Bargellini Boncompagni with an emphasis on the role of the patron, the significance of the locality, and the visual semiotics of the Virgin Mary’s gaze in prompting conversion in the repentant prostitutes of the Carmelite convertite convent associated with Ss. Filippo and Giacomo in Bologna, Italy. Including a commentary on contemporary social expectations of modest behavior and the painting’s deliberate incorporation of inappropriate female behavior towards a religious purpose. A discussion of uniquely Carmelite iconography, the use of …

Lost Without A Connection: Analyzing Netflix's Maniac In The Digital Streaming Age, Eric Bruce Apr 2020

Lost Without A Connection: Analyzing Netflix's Maniac In The Digital Streaming Age, Eric Bruce

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the emergence and rise in popularity of streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu, the way in which audiences view and interact with media, as well as each other, has changed drastically. The move to digital streaming impacts how audiences everywhere experience and expect immediacy in media, connecting deeper with what they watch. Along with this transition in spectatorship comes a shift in visual aesthetics, a trend that can be seen across various digitally-streamed series. This thesis serves to address what this transition is and how it affects the cultural landscape of the digital age, continuing the conversation of …

Personifying Machinery, Zachary Wilson Apr 2020

Personifying Machinery, Zachary Wilson

Student Scholar Showcase

The mindset of antebellum-era plantation owners in the southern United States was complex to say the least. Slavery became an integral part of not only southern society, but also the global economy due to British demand for raw materials in order to fuel their industrial revolution. What is important to understand, though, about this business model is that it is almost entirely based in acquiring more property (land and slaves) which are then managed together in order to produce profitable goods. It is the same concept shared by the owner of a factory who acquires more space for operations and …

An Attraction To Horror: Understanding The Theatrum Crudelitatum Haereticorum Nostri Temporis, Ellie Thorson Apr 2020

An Attraction To Horror: Understanding The Theatrum Crudelitatum Haereticorum Nostri Temporis, Ellie Thorson

Student Research Symposium

Horrifying and under scrutinized the Theatrum Crudelitatum Haereticorum Nostri Temporis (1587) depicts endless pages of sixteenth century torture methods inflicted upon Catholic martyrs, leaving sufficient room for questions waiting to be answered. The largest and most pressing question this book offers is why it was created. When exploring different conclusions to such a question it is important to understand the contextual history and nature of a rare object such as this. There is probable cause that this book was created in response to John Foxe's Book of Martyrs, which was published 24 years prior to the publication of the Theatrum …

There's No Place Like Home: Arlene Francis And Domesticity In Doubt, Caroline Argrave Apr 2020

There's No Place Like Home: Arlene Francis And Domesticity In Doubt, Caroline Argrave

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis examines the life and career of stage, film, and television personality Arlene Francis, in order to add nuance to the understanding of how women broke into the entertainment industry. Francis, rather than brazenly flouting norms, wooed her employers and audience into acceptance by combining her prominent new “power” with comforting old-fashioned norms. The result was a woman doing something patently new while speaking in a way disarmingly familiar. In this way, Francis is reminiscent of other female pioneers, who used a traditionally feminine persona to charm their male colleagues into supporting their leadership, and as a result has …

Theater Of The Obsessed, Cynthia Sampson Apr 2020

Theater Of The Obsessed, Cynthia Sampson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Theater of the Obsessed uses fandom to illustrate how audiencing can be a form of queer worldmaking. I begin by establishing that audiencing is a process that takes place over time and is not confined to the seat you’re sitting in while consuming various media. Because audiencing is a nearly invisible process, I turn to fandom and fanworks to demonstrate what some of the other parts look like. From there, I take a mystorical approach. That is, I use mystory to braid my personal audiencing, popular culture examples, and professional scholarship together to create a wide image. What becomes apparent …

"I Am My Father's Daughter": Inheriting Environmental Attitudes In Young Adult Dystopian Fiction, Courtney Green Apr 2020

"I Am My Father's Daughter": Inheriting Environmental Attitudes In Young Adult Dystopian Fiction, Courtney Green

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The worlds of young adult dystopian fiction exude anxiety – anxiety about romantic love, family, freedom, politics, and, in many ways, the present state of the environment as our future. But where do children learn their attitudes regarding the natural world? And how do the children of narratives such as young adult dystopian fiction go about fixing the problems they see in the natural world as a result of the attitudes they were raised with? Do they even go about fixing anything at all? By looking closely at parental relationships and attitudes regarding nature in two of the most popular …

Rape Fantasy And The Feminist: A History Of Critical Thought, Michaela Tashjian Apr 2020

Rape Fantasy And The Feminist: A History Of Critical Thought, Michaela Tashjian

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The rape scene has occurred and recurred in literature since literature’s inception. Though the function of this versatile trope is not always clear, its prevalence is undeniable. Often, these gruesome scenes appear as works of realism, presenting women’s harsh reality to the public to expose rape culture. In popular women’s fiction, however, the purpose of the trope is not as clear. Janice Radway, in Reading the Romance, and Tania Modleski, in Loving with a Vengeance: Mass-produced Fantasies for Women, address such occurrences in their critique of romance novels whose plots rely heavily on the rape or near-rape of the heroine. …

Uses Of Photography To Address Social And Political Issues In Guatemala, Thomas Avalos, Clayton Mccarl Apr 2020

Uses Of Photography To Address Social And Political Issues In Guatemala, Thomas Avalos, Clayton Mccarl

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

My research project involves how photography affects Guatemala. Following the Spanish invasion 500 years ago, several issues began to occur in Guatemala. Despite Guatemala being Central Americas’ most industrialized country, several issues were highlighted from the past towards the present. These include cultivation for coffee by the Indians, as well as women being abused and neglected starting at an early age towards adulthood, and homeless individuals living in urban streets like Guatemala City. There are several kinds of methods that explains how photography explores social and political Conflict and Guatemala. The first part delves into historical issues that occurs during …

The Drug War Hegemony: The United States In Latin America, Chris Tasker, Chau Kelly Apr 2020

The Drug War Hegemony: The United States In Latin America, Chris Tasker, Chau Kelly

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

International relations are based upon power, the dynamics of these power relations are integral to the interaction of all states. In this regard my work has been focused on examining how the United States and a broader group of Latin American states have had the character of their relations changed by a priority on the “War on Drugs” through the early 1970s, up until the early 2000s. The scope of my study included such works as international treaties, government accounts, accounts from non-government organizations, and works of academia, which were contrasted by the actual actions which participating states took. The …

Unknown Ghosts: Reasons For The Crisis At Wounded Knee, Brijana M. Sullivan Apr 2020

Unknown Ghosts: Reasons For The Crisis At Wounded Knee, Brijana M. Sullivan

Tenor of Our Times

This article is in favor of the argument that what happened at Wounded Knee in 1890 was not, as many have believed, a massacre. Instead, by tracing events that led up to the horrific incident such as the formation of reservations, the emergence of the Ghost Dance, and the death of Sitting Bull, this article aims to show that what happened was the result of multiple factors including desperation, panic, suspicion, uneasiness, and especially fear.

Pilgrimage: True Belonging: Exploring The Human Desire To Belong Through Dance And Storytelling, Lincoln K. Belford Apr 2020

Pilgrimage: True Belonging: Exploring The Human Desire To Belong Through Dance And Storytelling, Lincoln K. Belford

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

The human sense of belonging morphs and changes as we mature and gain life experience. The relationships we make, or choose not to, affect the way we perceive ourselves, which directly correlates to our understanding of how we belong to the universe as a whole. Perception of self and belonging are inextricably connected, therefore by focusing on belonging to ourselves rather than to the world around us, we experience self-acceptance, allowing us to forge deeper, more meaningful connections with those we choose. True belonging is an active practice that takes effort, and involves reflection and critical evaluation of self. A …

Between The Judean Desert And Gaza: Asceticism And The Monastic Communities Of Palestine In The Sixth Century, Austin Mccray Apr 2020

Between The Judean Desert And Gaza: Asceticism And The Monastic Communities Of Palestine In The Sixth Century, Austin Mccray

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation focuses on the religious culture of Christian monasticism in sixth-century Palestine. Rather than see the monastic communities of the Judean Desert, just to the east of Jerusalem, and those around Gaza as two independent monastic regions, as much scholarship has done, the dissertation focuses on the common threads that can be seen in the monastic teachings and idealized ascetic practices in the literature of the area. This dissertation reveals ways to redefine the boundaries between the monastic communities of Palestine during the sixth century as well as emphasizes the continuities between the monks of the Judean Desert and …

Thus, the lessons presented in this chapter are also appropriate for the social studies classroom and may be used to address curriculum standards set forth by the National Council for the Social Studies. Through its use of both explicit and implicit questioning, the QuestionAnswer Relationships strategy can be …

Bridging Past, Present And Future Through Art: El Mal Querer And Le Roman De Flamenca, Georgina Wilson Apr 2020

Bridging Past, Present And Future Through Art: El Mal Querer And Le Roman De Flamenca, Georgina Wilson

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

This on-going project examines how a best-selling Latin pop album resulted in a sudden and significant increase in the obscure medieval Occitan novel which inspired it. The widespread success of El Mal Querer (2018) by Spanish musician Rosalia has generated popular interest in the 13th century novel Le Roman de Flamenca which had previously been confined almost exclusively to the realm of academic interest. El Mal Querer presents the thematic framework of Le Roman de Flamenca – a vindication of the role of woman in love and in society – with a combination of folkloric flamenco stylization and urban musical …

S E L F: A Visual Study Of Dissociation, Bear Cooper, Sheila Goloborotko

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Experiencing prolonged sexual abuse can lead to a shift in the sense of self as the mind tries to protect itself. Depression, low self-esteem, guilt –– these are all symptoms we frequently hear associated with the aftermath of trauma. They are mentioned enough that we consider ourselves familiar with them. However, symptoms like depersonalization and alexithymia are symptoms not commonly understood. This visual study examines these dissociatve symptoms by looking at the separation of the body and mind that occurs after sexual trauma. S e l f is an etching-based creative research to understand these psychological aspects of processing sexual …

Exploring The Identity Development Of Second Generation Filipino-Americans, Melody Fordan Apr 2020

Exploring The Identity Development Of Second Generation Filipino-Americans, Melody Fordan

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

First-generation Filipinos come to the United States in order to start a new life, provide for their families back home, seeking to fulfill their own “American Dream”, and become U.S citizens just like all immigrants. The population of Filipino-Americans is increasing as more aspire to move to the States as many have done before. Simultaneously, cultures of both worlds blur together in one’s upbringing. Second-generation Filipino-Americans, children of at least one or both first-generation Filipino-Americans, go through leaps and hurdles in their quest of delving into their ethnic identity. One’s identity can be defined by many attributes of culture, but …
