Self-Reflective Journaling: A Practice For Achieving Self-Understanding And Acceptance, Overcoming Creative Resistance, And Moving Toward Ideal Self, Courtney Moses May 2019

Self-Reflective Journaling: A Practice For Achieving Self-Understanding And Acceptance, Overcoming Creative Resistance, And Moving Toward Ideal Self, Courtney Moses

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

The Critical and Creative Thinking synthesis course provided an opportunity for me to begin a process of self-transformation, using all that I had learned in the program about metacognition, reflective practice, and creativity to inspire goals for my personal growth. As part of my work in the synthesis course, I rediscovered a consistent practice of self-reflective journaling that I had abandoned some years ago and used my synthesis paper to document my process in hopes that others may learn from it and perhaps be inspired to take on a self-reflective journaling practice of their own. As my paper reveals through …

Meta Me On An Ecstatic Walk With Hansel And Gretel: A Reflection Of Dispensed, Reclaimed And Reframed Existence, Laura White May 2019

Meta Me On An Ecstatic Walk With Hansel And Gretel: A Reflection Of Dispensed, Reclaimed And Reframed Existence, Laura White

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This synthesis revolves around a rendition of Hansel and Gretel, in which I am exiled from innocence through the chaos of life. I recollect my breadcrumb clues in the form of thoughts and beliefs that I have held for as long as I remember. The breadcrumbs lead to open-ended questions about habits of mind for meaning making. My process of self-examination uses an adaptation of Action Research and I connect my current life to where I began using an Intersecting Processes analysis. I observe and document the unfolding of my life while studying it, using self-expression and thinking made visible …

Colonialism To Carnival: Tracking Centuries Of Racialized Imagery Of Brazilian Woman, Livia Dias May 2019

Colonialism To Carnival: Tracking Centuries Of Racialized Imagery Of Brazilian Woman, Livia Dias

Theses

The thesis explores how the image of Brazilian women, which is highly racialized and sexualized, was constructed historically, and try to understand why Brazilian women are seen as they are in the twentieth century. Throughout the chapters, I will analyze historical documents that I argued helped to construct this image inside Brazil and worldwide.

What Advantage Does Difference Make? Leveling The Imperial Playing Field, Daniel Heinz May 2019

What Advantage Does Difference Make? Leveling The Imperial Playing Field, Daniel Heinz

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

In this article, I revisit the last ten years of international sport policies on gender testing in order to revise normative constructions of the athletes’ bodies. Specifically, I focus on the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) new regulation from 2018 governing the eligibility of certain female athletes with differences of sexual development accompanied by elevated levels of natural testosterone. I argue that the IAAF testosterone regulation is based on a colonial continuity of upholding gender norms and racial hierarchies.

Sense Of Community And Space, Amanda Corona May 2019

Sense Of Community And Space, Amanda Corona

Celebration of Learning

Sense of community (SOC) is defined as a person’s experience of a group or specific area (Kenkmann et al, 1996). Physical spaces can affect SOC; small colleges have higher SOC on average than universities (Lounsbury & DeNeui, 1996). A person’s identity, especially ethnic identity, can also influence SOC (Rivas-Drake, 2012; Liu, 2005). However, there is less work on the intersection of physical space and ethnic identity (Devlin et al, 2008). This raises the questions: how does the experience of a community space affect someone’s SOC, and would it vary by ethnicity?

The relationship between communal spaces and identity can be …

The Just And The Unjust: Ernest Hemingway And Protest Literature In Response To Civil Disobedience In The Context Of The Two World Wars, Trang Hoang May 2019

The Just And The Unjust: Ernest Hemingway And Protest Literature In Response To Civil Disobedience In The Context Of The Two World Wars, Trang Hoang

Celebration of Learning

By obeying unjust laws, human beings give up their own opportunity to live in a humane world. Henceforth, the two World Wars stand remarkably as situations that conscience of morality has to be placed on top of obedience to ensure the essence of human existence, and a failure to do so led to not only the deaths and exhaustions worldwide but also the collapse of human love and human responsibility to love. Protest literature, especially Ernest Hemingway's novels allow people to reflect on this philosophy through an artistically credible lens.

In-Between Places, Jonah Fleeger

Masters Theses

I am an emerging artist originally from Northwest Indiana. I attended a small boarding school called Verde Valley School, in Sedona, Arizona, which is where my love for pottery first started. I received my BFA in ceramics from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After college I was fortunate enough to find studio space and work at the Lillstreet Art Center, where I was a teacher, teaching assistant and glaze maker. Since then I have completed post-baccalaureate programs at The University of Colorado Boulder and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. This book is a presentation of myself …

The Affective Politics Of Twitter, Johnathan C. Flowers May 2019

The Affective Politics Of Twitter, Johnathan C. Flowers

Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings

Given the increasing encroachment of Twitter into offline experience, it has become necessary to look beyond the formation of identity in online spaces to the ways in which identities surface through the formation of affective communities organized through the use of technocultural assemblages, or the platforms, algorithms, and digital networks through which affect circulates in an online space. This essay focuses on the microblogging website Twitter as one such technocultural assemblage whose hashtag functionality allows for the circulation of affect among bodies which “surface” within the affective communities organized on Twitter through their alignment with and orientation by hashtags which …

Hacking The Extended Mind: The Security Implications Of The New Metaphysics, Robin L. Zebrowski May 2019

Hacking The Extended Mind: The Security Implications Of The New Metaphysics, Robin L. Zebrowski

Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings

Computer security expert Paul Syverson has argued that there is a computer security equivalent of gaslighting: where a clever adversary could convince some system that some component that is not really a part of the system is in fact a part of the system. If non-biological items from our environments (or even pieces of our environments themselves) can be part of our minds (the standard Extended Mind hypothesis, EM), they are therefore part of our selves, and therefore subject to Syverson’s worry about boundary in a way that has not been explored before. If some version of EM holds, then …
