How To Solve Hume's Problem Of Induction, Alexander Jackson
How To Solve Hume's Problem Of Induction, Alexander Jackson
Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper explains what’s wrong with a Hume-inspired argument for skepticism about induction. Hume’s argument takes as a premise that inductive reasoning presupposes that the future will resemble the past. I explain why that claim is not plausible. The most plausible premise in the vicinity is that inductive reasoning from E to H presupposes that if E then H. I formulate and then refute a skeptical argument based on that premise. Central to my response is a psychological explanation for how people judge that if E then H without realizing that they thereby settled the matter rationally.
Rampant Non‐Factualism: A Metaphysical Framework And Its Treatment Of Vagueness, Alexander Jackson
Rampant Non‐Factualism: A Metaphysical Framework And Its Treatment Of Vagueness, Alexander Jackson
Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Rampant non-factualism is the view that all non-fundamental matters are non-factual, in a sense inspired by Kit Fine (2001). The first half of this paper argues that if we take non-factualism seriously for any matters, such as morality, then we should take rampant non-factualism seriously. The second half of the paper argues that rampant non-factualism makes possible an attractive theory of vagueness. We can give non-factualist accounts of non-fundamental matters that nicely characterize the vagueness they manifest (if any). I suggest that such non-factualist theories dissolve philosophical puzzlement about vagueness. In particular, the approach implies that philosophers should not try …

The Wonderful Swiss Touch, C. Naseer Ahmad
The Wonderful Swiss Touch, C. Naseer Ahmad
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Famous Swiss chocolate brands like Toblerone and Lindt are hard to miss because modern consumers will find them at checkout counters, airport gift shops and so many places. Likewise Swiss cheese products adorn the grocery store shelves in the United States . While many people might be familiar with some Swiss products they might not have a good understanding about what Switzerland is about in the modern world. This is because a few products or nuggets of information cannot really tell the whole story about a country. For example, those consuming Jack Daniels Whisky overseas might be familiar with the …

Overcoming Barriers: Helping Navy Chaplains Understand The Need And Implementation Of Self-Care, Carl Muehler
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Muehler, Carl B. “Overcoming Barriers: Helping Navy Chaplains Understand the Need and Implementation of Self-care.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 115 pp.
The Navy Chaplain serves with Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard personnel throughout the world and often in challenging environments including at sea and combat operations. The Navy Chaplain is unique because the chaplain has complete confidentiality and may be the only caregiver with a deployed unit, which can take its toll on the chaplain. Self-care is critical for the chaplain on a personal level and to maintain effectiveness in the support to the personnel …

For The Love Of Psychoanalysis [Table Of Contents], Elizabeth Rottenberg
For The Love Of Psychoanalysis [Table Of Contents], Elizabeth Rottenberg
Philosophy & Theory
For the Love of Psychoanalysis is a book about what exceeds or resists calculation—in life and in death. Rottenberg examines what emerges from the difference between psychoanalysis and philosophy.
Part I, “Freuderrida,” announces a non-traditional Freud: a Freud associated not with sexuality, repression, unconsciousness, and symbolization, but with accidents and chance. Looking at accidents both in and of Freud’s writing, Rottenberg elaborates the unexpected insights that both produce and disrupt our received ideas of psychoanalytic theory.
Whereas the close reading of Freud leaves us open to the accidents of psychoanalytic writing, Part II, “Freuderrida,” addresses itself …

At The Intersection Of Hope And Despair: Korea’S Uncertain Trajectory In The 1980s, Haley Noelle Cole
At The Intersection Of Hope And Despair: Korea’S Uncertain Trajectory In The 1980s, Haley Noelle Cole
History
The 1980s in South Korea were defined by political factionalism and constant protest. The brief ecstasy afforded by the assassination of the dictatorial president Park Chung Hee in 1979 gave way to disillusionment with the policies of his successor, Chun Doo Hwan. Throughout Chun’s term, he sought to subvert popular perceptions of his authoritarian illegitimacy he earned through the bloody military coup with which he obtained power. Chun hoped to justify his presidency within the contexts of 1) the 1987 presidential election, wherein the country would witness its first peaceful transfer of power in the post-war era, and 2) the …

Summer Institute June 2019
The Los del Valle Oral History Project began in 1992 with the objectives of collecting and preserving the historical recollections of people in South Texas researched by scholars and underdocumented in archives and published research. Some interviewees have received national acclaim, such as folklorist and scholar Americo Paredes, conjunto pioneers Narciso Martinez and Eva Ybarra, writer Carmen Tafolla and Medal of Honor recipient Jose M. Lopez. Also included are Benito Trevino, ethnobotanist from Rio Grande City and Mary Helen Berlanga, educational proponent from Corpus Christi. This is one of the first oral history collections about Mexican Americans in Texas to …

Écriture De L'Enfance Et Projection Fictionnelle De Soi Dans Impossible De Grandir De Fatou Diome, Damo Junior Vianney Koffi
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article examines the retelling of childhood in Impossible de grandir. Not only does the study focus on the recalling of childhood memories taken as locus of survival of the "je", as expression of the novelist's personality disguised as Salie, her fictional double, but it also examines the processes and implications of such a mode of literary creation set up as an internal and post traumatic dialogue between present and past, a present and past self. Such conversation, I argue, makes apparent the fragmentations of the "je" and the hybrid identity construction of Fatou Diome. As well, provided this process …

Amazones Et Guerrieres Dans L'Reuvre Romanesque De Fatou Diome, Lydia Bauer
Amazones Et Guerrieres Dans L'Reuvre Romanesque De Fatou Diome, Lydia Bauer
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
One enters Fatou Diome's creative work as in a wrestling arena. She features strong female narrators and characters. These, just like amazons, battle against the patriarchal system, unfair treatments and prejudices of all kinds, in order to regain their dignity and freedom. Their weapons are of the intellectual kind such as language and writing. In this article, we examine different kinds of battles featured in Diome's novels by focusing on both plot and narration.

Sillage, Trace, Empreinte: La Migrance Ambulatoire De Fatou Diome, Catherine Mazauric
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
From Le ventre de l'Atlantique and Impossible de grandir to Marianne porte plainte!, going as far back as her early poems and short stories published in journals, Fatou Diome uses recurring patterns of wake, trace and footprints as different forms of physical and ethical engagements in the world. In the process of literary creation, such engagement generates a mobile third location, "a space of migrance" where various sets of cultural heritages and ethical values undergo reformulation. This paper argues that it is in such a space that Diome locates the emergence of a powerful feminine subjectivity which gained its autonomy …

Fatou Diome: Une Création Entre Les Arts, Sada Niang
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
As she began her career in the 1980s, Fatou Diome inherited a rich tradition of literary texts and media productions, African cinema among them. Since she also hailed from a country known as "francophone", it is hardly surprising that her novels resonate with the style and narratives of African, French and other European writers. In this article, we propose to unveil a few of these artistic threads which may have informed and inspired Fatou Diome.

« Une Maison Abandonné, C'Est Comme Une Histoire Inachevée ». Espace, Corps Et Recit Dans La Nuit Sacrée De Tahar Ben Jelloun, Clarisse Barbier
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
We will analyze the relationship between body, space, and narration, three major concepts of La nuit sacrée that are intertwined in their value of potential means of alienation but also of liberation and of power. We will first examine the main closed spaces and their influence on Zahra's body and narration. Then we will analyze the occurrences of bodies to determine to which extent they inform of Zahra's progression - or regression - in her quest. Finally, Zahra's psychological evolution will be studied: Zahra finally finds her liberation through the somatization of her past, not its rejection, and through speech.
