How Can The History Museums Be Engaging For Generation Z? -A Mobile App Which Can Collect Historical Stories From History Museums, Yumeng Yang Jun 2019

How Can The History Museums Be Engaging For Generation Z? -A Mobile App Which Can Collect Historical Stories From History Museums, Yumeng Yang

Theses - ALL

The museum is a cultural place for people to broaden their horizons and it is also an essential environment for informal learning. However, due to our fast-paced lifestyle and diverse forms of entertainment, needs are increasingly varied, and museums face many challenges. Many people, especially young people like Generation Z (a group of people who were born between the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s), are not interested in static exhibitions with tedious and wordy interpretations. Therefore, building the connection between Generation Z and making history museums more engaging is crucial. The goal of my project is to identify the engaging elements …

Upstream Downtown: Theatre Creation Through A Feminist And Multispecies Lens, Morgan Johnson, Alexandra Simpson Jun 2019

Upstream Downtown: Theatre Creation Through A Feminist And Multispecies Lens, Morgan Johnson, Alexandra Simpson

The Goose

In the historically masculine Western sciences, we are told we can fully know a being by dissecting, labelling, testing, observing, and documenting. This article explores how multispecies and feminist theatre creation and performance, specifically in the style of clown and bouffon, can work to resist such narratives and offer a more sentient understanding of interspecies relationships. Our investigations focus on our journey as two female creators of Upstream Downtown, a research-based, physical theatre play about salmon and humans finding home in the settler colonial city of Toronto.

Sloppy Identity In Chinese Sluicing-Like Constructions, Ying Gong Jun 2019

Sloppy Identity In Chinese Sluicing-Like Constructions, Ying Gong

Theses - ALL

Concerning the nature of sluicing-like constructions in Chinese, this thesis examines two competing analyses proposed in the literature: the pseudo-sluicing analysis and the PF-deletion (sluicing) analysis. It shows that both analyses fail to reconcile with the presence of the copula shi as well as the sloppy reading found in Chinese sluicing-like constructions. It also observes that the sloppy reading and the copula shi are in complementary distribution—constructions with the copular shi are unable to be associated with sloppy readings. With respect to such facts, this thesis suggests to divide Chinese sluicing-like constructions into two distinct syntactic structures, namely pseudo-sluicing (for …

Diagnostic Mhealth For Autoimmune Disorders, Yun Deng Jun 2019

Diagnostic Mhealth For Autoimmune Disorders, Yun Deng

Theses - ALL

Many mobile applications on the market can help patients record symptoms and progression of their illnesses, and among them, many help to document autoimmune disorders. In this article, I've used the content analysis method to analyze the existing relevant apps in the Apple App Store. My results reveal an important design gap, in that there is almost no app that allows patients to communicate with their doctors in a timely manner and accurately record their week to week, month to month medical condition. This article presents the smartphone app I developed based on the iOS operating system to fill this …

The Most Beautiful Place On Earth: Wallace Stegner In California, 1945-1993, Matthew Dougall Stewart Jun 2019

The Most Beautiful Place On Earth: Wallace Stegner In California, 1945-1993, Matthew Dougall Stewart

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation explores the life and work of the writer Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) and his intellectual efforts to create, clarify, and defend the contours of a “geography of hope” in the American West. Chapter 1 begins with Stegner’s move to California in 1945. In the context of his developing regional vision as expressed in early articles and books, it traces Stegner’s attempts to build a range of institutions in California as well as his first writings that either adopted the state as its subject or used it as a setting for fictional work. Chapter 2 explores a research project that …

Popular Geography Writing In America, 1783–1888, Shane Patrick Avery Jun 2019

Popular Geography Writing In America, 1783–1888, Shane Patrick Avery

Dissertations - ALL

“Popular Geography Writing in America, 1783–1888” is an intellectual and cultural history that traces the connections among geography writing, print culture, and nationalism. It challenges the conventional historiographical paradigm that understands antebellum and postbellum periods in United States history as fundamentally discontinuous. The study suggests that the published geographies of Jedidiah Morse, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Griswold Goodrich, Arnold Guyot, William Gilpin, George Perkins Marsh, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Albert Richardson, Clarence King, and John Wesley Powell created a popular discursive sense of equivalency between the physical landscape of a North American continent and the United States as a nationstate.

Apostles For Capitalism: Amway, Movement Conservatism, And The Remaking Of The American Economy, 1959-2009, Davor Mondom Jun 2019

Apostles For Capitalism: Amway, Movement Conservatism, And The Remaking Of The American Economy, 1959-2009, Davor Mondom

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation examines the Amway Corporation, the world’s largest multi-level marketing company. Since its inception, Amway has purported to offer individuals the ability to go into business for themselves and to participate in free enterprise through direct sales. At the same time, many have attacked Amway as a fraudulent pyramid scheme that trades in false promises and leaves its distributors financially and psychologically worse off than before they joined. In addition to running the company for over three decades, Amway’s cofounders, Richard DeVos and Jay Van Andel, along with members of their families, have been influential players in the Republican …

Scrambling And Information Structure In Turkish, Kubranur Toplar Jun 2019

Scrambling And Information Structure In Turkish, Kubranur Toplar

Theses - ALL

This thesis focuses on scrambling in Turkish by discussing that word order deviations are driven by discourse-pragmatic factors. It gives a detailed description and analysis of Information Structure in the language through three main partitions: topic, focus and tail. It first presents potential morpho-semantic effects on the distribution of these partitions. Accordingly, specificity and definiteness categories may restrict topicalization possibilities, but it does not provide a conclusive account of all instances. Compared to topic, focus and tail are not constrained by any morphological and semantic regularities. However, tail must be referentially anchored in discourse. Then, the phonological features of the …

Beyond The Land: Maritime Interactions, Border Control, And Regional Powers Between China And Korea, 1500-1637, Jing Liu Jun 2019

Beyond The Land: Maritime Interactions, Border Control, And Regional Powers Between China And Korea, 1500-1637, Jing Liu

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation interweaves the maritime dynamics of Ming China and Chosŏn Korea’s northern sea space, the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea, with the Northeast Asian transition of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. This region formed an arena in this time period that allowed various players to communicate, negotiate, and contest. It also established a linkage between Northeast Asian terra-centered states and maritime East Asia. A systematic investigation of this particular region is thus essential to improving our understanding of interactive territorial and maritime relations. This dissertation investigates the increase of maritime commerce, wartime logistics, and military intervention …

Plasticity In Animated Children’S Cartoons: The Neoliberal Transforming Bodies And Static Worlds Of Ok Ko And Gumball, Rachel E. Cox Jun 2019

Plasticity In Animated Children’S Cartoons: The Neoliberal Transforming Bodies And Static Worlds Of Ok Ko And Gumball, Rachel E. Cox

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Through the study of OK KO! Let’s Be Heroes! and The Amazing World of Gumball, I argue that children’s cartoons represent and recreate anxieties toward money’s plasticity in the plasticity of the cartoon bodies and worlds. I closely examine the ambivalence towards abstraction’s plasticity in contemporary children’s cartoons to trace the neoliberal ambivalence towards money’s plasticity. While much scholarship has grappled with what can be understood as animatic plasticity, very little of it takes on the questions raised about neoliberal culture by televised children’s cartoons. Cartoons are important to study in this respect because their form allows for unbridled plasticity. …

"Roll" Models: Fat Sexuality And Its Representations In Pornographic Imagery, Leah Marie Turner Jun 2019

"Roll" Models: Fat Sexuality And Its Representations In Pornographic Imagery, Leah Marie Turner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to use specific fat pornographic imagery as a means to help us understand fat tropes and fetishization. The goal is to use our understandings of masculinity and race within fatness to create a possible launching point for further study within the field of fat sexuality studies. My rationale for writing such a paper is because fat sexuality studies is a field which has very little content, but potential for incredible scholarship which can impact not only our understandings of fat bodies, but of all bodies. The method for this thesis involves looking at specific …

White-Collar Working Class: The Ambiguous Identity Of Canadian Telegraph Operators, Michael Feagan Jun 2019

White-Collar Working Class: The Ambiguous Identity Of Canadian Telegraph Operators, Michael Feagan

Western Research Forum

Were telegraph operators members of the working class or the business class? Were they skilled or unskilled? Were they labourers or executives-in-training? Was a job as a telegraph operator a temporary stepping stone or a lifelong career? Was it a job for men or for women? Telegraph operators were suspended somewhere between all these poles. The telegraph operator occupied a “liminal space” in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century economy: a transitory position between management and labour, between skilled and unskilled labour, between men’s work and women’s work, between the white-collar office and the blue-collar factory floor. The ambiguous …

From Expectation to Experience: My Changing Identity as a Chinese International Student

Background:

This autobiographical narrative inquiry investigates what we can learn from my experience as a Chinese international student in both writing and art-based ways, which can inform Chinese international students’ expected supports that can improve their mental wellbeing. The study asks: Are my pre-departure expectations for studying in Canada different from the realities? If so, how and why are they different? And, what is my changing identity to be a Chinese international graduate student? The data sources of the study are my autobiographical memories, posts, blogs, journals, drawings …

Taking Back Control: Memes, Trump, 4chan, Gamergate, And The Rise Of The Alt-Right, Cam Fediuk Jun 2019

Taking Back Control: Memes, Trump, 4chan, Gamergate, And The Rise Of The Alt-Right, Cam Fediuk

Western Research Forum

Background

My thesis’s impetus is the rise of reactionary discourse on the internet, collectively known as the alt-right. As with the traditional right, the alt-right is anti-feminist, anti-immigration, and anti-political-correctness, but unlike its predecessor, is also anti-establishment, anti-religion, pro-Donald Trump, and thoroughly engaged with and immersed in the meme-based political discourse of digital media.

Hypothesis

I argue against the cyber-utopianism proposed by Douglass Rushkoff and other early internet theorists; I argue that, while the internet has made memes central to political discourse, the rise of laissez-faire social media platforms has not made the digital generation more enlightened, or tolerant, …

Understanding "A Common Word Between Us And You" Through I.A. Richards' New Rhetoric, Jonathan Gamble Jun 2019

Understanding "A Common Word Between Us And You" Through I.A. Richards' New Rhetoric, Jonathan Gamble

Augsburg Honors Review

I.A. Richards defines rhetoric as the study of misunderstandings and their remedies. I argue in this paper that "A Common Word Between Us and You" (ACW) - a rhetorical letter coauthored by H.R.H Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad and 38 Muslim scholars - shares Richards' definition as its end and anchors his theory in practice. ACW is an attempt to avoid misunderstandings and to allow for understandings between Christians and Muslims about two of their common Scriptural commandments: love of God and love of neighbor. In Richards' call for a new rhetoric, he asserts that the core of rhetoric must be …

Investigating The Media's Divulgence Of Divorce, Makenzie Moe Jun 2019

Investigating The Media's Divulgence Of Divorce, Makenzie Moe

Augsburg Honors Review

The transformation of the American family from an intact family unit into separate parts is a contemporary phenomenon that affects millions of Americans each year. The process of divorce is often painful, traumatic, and life altering. Over the past decades, divorce has become increasingly common. It is possible that the media has adjusted the way that divorce is portrayed and discussed since 1980 because divorce rates have fluctuated since the no-fault divorce policy was implemented. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, a content analysis was conducted to compare and contrast articles from four different publications throughout the last three decades. …

The Venetian Arsenal And Dante's Poetic Purpose, Eliot Davila Jun 2019

The Venetian Arsenal And Dante's Poetic Purpose, Eliot Davila

Augsburg Honors Review

John Ruskin remarked that if we were to pick an "honestly studious" three or four out of every hundred of Dante's admirers, then "we should rarely find one who knew why the Venetian Arsenal was described." Indeed, the wonderfully elaborate description of the Arsenal in Inferno XXI has long posed a problem for readers of the Commedia. This paper approaches Dante's representation of the Arsenal from a new perspective and finds that a more complete understanding of the image offers readers an original insight into what can be called the poetic purpose of Dante. For clarity of presentation, the paper …

Lost In Translation: Retelling The Tale Of Joan Of Arc, Hannah Jones Jun 2019

Lost In Translation: Retelling The Tale Of Joan Of Arc, Hannah Jones

Augsburg Honors Review

Ever since Joan of Arc was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431,, historians have studied her lengthy trial interrogations for a glimpse of who Joan the person was. They've offered society both pious and saucy descriptions, portrayed her as a "religious mystic, rebellious girl..."unnatural" transvestite," an Amazon, a schizophrenic, a patriot and, depending upon who you read, a common or uncommon woman of the Middle Ages. Lacking a definitive conclusion, historians, musicians, popular literary figures, modern filmmakers, and other larger social groups have gone on to portray her in their own ways: canonizing her as a saint, promoting …

Images Of Kingship: Statebuilding, Patronage, And Architecture In The Capitals Of The Mughal And Ottoman Empires, Meenakshi Krishnan Jun 2019

Images Of Kingship: Statebuilding, Patronage, And Architecture In The Capitals Of The Mughal And Ottoman Empires, Meenakshi Krishnan

Augsburg Honors Review

The Ottoman and the Mughal Empires, though widely recognized for their political prowess, military expansion, and systems of religious tolerance, are also renowned for their architectural contributions. Structures like the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and Red Fort in Delhi immediately capture the grandeur and magnificence of the empires of the Ottomans and Mughals, simultaneously serving as symbols of their artistic patronage and testaments to their splendor. Beyond establishing the empires' greatness, however, architecture was often directly tied to a specific agenda, reflecting poiitical goals, religious doctrines, and particular ideologies. A closer analysis of three cities in each of these empires …

Where Were The Lesbians In The Stonewall Riots? The Women’S House Of Detention & Lesbian Resistance, Polly Thistlethwaite Jun 2019

Where Were The Lesbians In The Stonewall Riots? The Women’S House Of Detention & Lesbian Resistance, Polly Thistlethwaite

Publications and Research

Where were the lesbians in the Stonewall Riots? They were jailed in the House of Detention for Women in Greenwich Village, New York City, two blocks away from the Stonewall Inn. Lesbians in the Women's House of Detention shouted from the windows to the rioters in the streets below, fueling the momentum of the Stonewall uprising. The women's prison was a site of lesbian confinement and resistance that inspired the 1969 uprising in Greenwich Village.

Polly Thistlethwaite is Chief Librarian at the Graduate Center, CUNY. She volunteered at the Lesbian Herstory Archives 1986 – 1997.

The Mysterious Incident Of The Missing Title: Why Did Titular Concern Vanish From Composition Studies?, John Lamothe Jun 2019

The Mysterious Incident Of The Missing Title: Why Did Titular Concern Vanish From Composition Studies?, John Lamothe

Publications

How much time, if any, do first-year writing instructors spend in class discussing the importance of titles on their students’ papers? Without looking at a mountain of lesson plans or interviewing a plethora of instructors from across the country, it is impossible to know what is and what isn’t commonly taught in first-year composition courses. Admittedly, introductory writing and research classes can vary greatly from institution to institution and even from instructor to instructor within the same department. However, judging by an examination of current First-Year Composition textbooks, Rhet/Comp scholars place little importance on discussing the effect of titles on …

The Lion’S Gaze: Filmmaking As An Awareness Practice, Robyn Traill Jun 2019

The Lion’S Gaze: Filmmaking As An Awareness Practice, Robyn Traill

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This is an extract from a Masters study describing my exploration of the art of film as an inner awareness practice from the view of the Buddhist yogic tradition and the teachings by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche called dharma art. I call this contemplative film practice. The article speaks to the initial pre-production and production phases of this research where formless Mahamudra meditations were most important. A camera lens was employed as a cue or reminder to practice the lens of awareness while capturing moving images. In the post-production phase, the creative meditations within Buddhist yogas became a major reference point: visualization, …

Music As Meditative Inquiry: Dialogical Reflections On Learning And Composing Indian Classical Music, Ashwani Kumar, Adrian Downey Jun 2019

Music As Meditative Inquiry: Dialogical Reflections On Learning And Composing Indian Classical Music, Ashwani Kumar, Adrian Downey

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This dialogical paper explores Ashwani Kumar’s concept of music as meditative inquiry and its implications for teaching, learning, and living. The notion of music as meditative inquiry is rooted in Kumar’s journey of learning, composing, and researching Indian classical music. This paper makes use of an emerging methodological framework called dialogical meditative inquiry (DMI), which has been theorized by Kumar. Due to its emphasis on meditative and holistic listening, DMI goes beyond a usual interview where the intent is to elicit specific information. Through employing DMI to explore Kumar’s ideas regarding music, meditative inquiry, and creativity, this paper engages with …
