Hamlet: The Grim Reaper, J. L. Williams
Hamlet: The Grim Reaper, J. L. Williams
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Right versus wrong when battling grief under God can evoke in one a very strong argument, the pain at times can be too much to bear but we must go on. The soliloquy “To Be or Not to Be” is arguably the most famous from Shakespeare’s prominent play Hamlet; the piece displaying themes of logos and pathos throughout. The young prince’s speech reflects upon the tragedy of his father’s passing and logically debates the value of his own existence in comparison; accompanied by the presence of his true love Ophelia, and unknowingly to the eavesdropping ears of the new king …

Literacy Growth: Life And Literacy Experiences, Josue G. Ballesteros-Flores
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Everyone has a different upbringing when it comes to literacy practices. The process I had to go through just happened to be more challenging. I grew up speaking spanish, but as I became exposed to different environments, different factors affected my literacy practices, such as social media, music, and television. I also grew up and learned from my own previous mistakes.
My Theory Of Writing, Fernanda Lima Duarte
My Theory Of Writing, Fernanda Lima Duarte
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
The research is based on analysis of the writing produced throughout the GSW 1110 class. Students were asked to evaluate the writing through reflection of ideas supported and making connections to key rhetorical terms to create our own theory of writing. To start with, in the article “Shitty First Drafts,” Anne Lamott supports the idea of the importance on shaping the writing and self-assurance according to the audience’s demands. Secondly, writing process and revision strategies are approached, reinforced by Nancy Sommers in her article “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers.” The final aspect addressed is critical thinking, …

How Fashion And Beauty Advertising Negatively Effects Women, Olivia Free
How Fashion And Beauty Advertising Negatively Effects Women, Olivia Free
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
In today’s society consumers are constantly exposed to advertisements throughout their day to day lives, whether they realize it or not. The influence advertising has had over the last ten years has grown because of the materialistic society. It is important to realize the extent in which advertisings are thrown into the hustle of every day lives. One of the most problematic industries is fashion and beauty. The subject of most fashion and beauty ads are women and they are being objectified and dehumanizing causing a drastic decline in self-esteem and in increase in overall body shaming from the unrealistic …
On Her Own: A Qualitative Study On The College-To-Career Transition Of Black Second-Generation Alumnae, Ladessa Y. Mitchell
On Her Own: A Qualitative Study On The College-To-Career Transition Of Black Second-Generation Alumnae, Ladessa Y. Mitchell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the college-to-career transition of Black second-generation alumnae in the development phase of emerging adulthood using Schlossberg’s (2011) Transition Model. As the researcher, I collected data from Black second-generation alumnae of predominantly White public universities in Florida to examine how their intersecting identities (i.e., race, gender, and educational status) and use of metaphorical capital (i.e., social, cultural, and human capital) influence their transition. The conceptual framework for this study is based on the 4 S’s of Schlossberg’s Transition Model as well as emerging adulthood, forms of capital, and the intersecting identities of …

Unruly Matter: Masculine Consumption in English Restoration Literature
Over the past several decades, material culture scholars working within the “Long 18th Century” have identified how the figure of the woman consumer became an ideological nodal point that registered new enthusiasm for emerging economic dynamics (mercantilism, nascent capitalism, etc.) while also expressing masculine anxieties about consumerism and the role of consumable goods in English society. Although many scholars have noted that men functioned symbolically and ideologically as English society’s primary consumers of material goods in the later 17th century, there is no scholarly work that aims to describe the …

Staging Intersectionality: Power And Performance In American Cultural Texts, 1855-2019, Alexandra Reznik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores a diverse array of cultural texts, from literary representations to live performances, from the antebellum period to the contemporary moment, that highlight African-American women singer-celebrities navigating entertainment industries in the United States. Focusing on significant figures from the nineteenth century to the present including Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield (the first prominently known Black woman singer in the antebellum period), Pauline Hopkins (the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century novelist and soprano), Sissieretta Jones (a twentieth-century soprano singer), and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (a contemporary singer-celebrity, songwriter, and producer), this study re-imagines the archive of Black singer-celebrities by centering Black women’s performances and …
Kink In Flux: Bdsm Theory And Sexual Praxis, Celeste Pietrusza
Kink In Flux: Bdsm Theory And Sexual Praxis, Celeste Pietrusza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The opening decades of the 21st century have seen a veritable explosion of representations of bondage, discipline and sadomasochism (BDSM) and kink practices in mainstream media and American culture. Along with this, empirical researchers working in sexuality studies continue to show, contrary to the history of stigmatizing accounts in the history of clinical psychology, no evidence of increased pathology and, in some studies, better outcomes on measures of mental health.
Given the legacy of psychoanalysis in foregrounding considerations of sadomasochism and sexuality for the human psyche, it seems particularly well positioned to approach the complexities of dynamic fantasies involved …
Just Between Us Girls: Discursive Spaces From America's First Gay Magazine To The World's Last Website For Queer Women, 1947-2019, Josie Rush
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Just Between Us Girls charts the diffusion of queer theory outside of the academy, using convergence theory to examine communication technologies like periodicals and the Web to argue for a conception of queer theory that includes discourse between queer women about queerness. In making this argument, this project creates a lineage of discursive spaces by, for, and about queer women, putting content from these spaces in conversation with canonical queer theorists like Judith Butler, Eve Sedgwick, and Jack Halberstam. Analyzing and contextualizing discursive spaces like Vice Versa (1947-1948), The Ladder (1956-1972), The Furies (1972-1973), AfterEllen, and Autostraddle demonstrates not …
