Remembrance Of A Wound: Ethical Mourning In The Works Of Ana Menéndez, Elías Miguel Muñoz, And Junot Díaz, José Aparicio

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Remembrance of a Wound: Ethical Mourning in the Works of Ana Menéndez, Elías Miguel Muñoz, and Junot Díaz explores Latinx experiences of ethical mourning, an act akin to a scar remaining after a wound heals. This literary ethical mourning respects the memories of people and places no longer present. I define ethical mourning in Derridean terms and connect it to testimonio to illustrate how certain Cuban American and Dominican American characters, having lost their homeland through exile, immigration, and political turmoil, become practiced at mourning. For Derrida, ethical mourning employs poetic language to bear witness to a loss in such …

Bridging The Divide Through Graphic Novels: Teaching Non-Jews’ Holocaust Narratives To Jewish Students, Matt Reingold Sep 2019

Bridging The Divide Through Graphic Novels: Teaching Non-Jews’ Holocaust Narratives To Jewish Students, Matt Reingold

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

The following paper considers how integrating Holocaust graphic novels that prominently feature non-Jewish characters can be effective in introducing Jewish students to new perspectives on contemporary understandings of the Holocaust. Drawing on the results of recent studies about rising anti-Semitism and Jews' concerns for their safety, feelings of insularity are understandably becoming more pervasive within the Jewish community. The author argues that in order to combat the negative aspects of this entrenchment, Jewish students need to be introduced to thoughtful and complex narratives that relate to historical anti-Semitic incidents which also model ways of building relationships between the disparate communities …

The Mere Mention Of Asians In Affirmative Action, Jennifer Lee, Van C. Tran Sep 2019

The Mere Mention Of Asians In Affirmative Action, Jennifer Lee, Van C. Tran

Publications and Research

Presumed competent, U.S. Asians evince exceptional educational outcomes but lack the cultural pedigree of elite whites that safeguard them from bias in the labor market. In spite of their nonwhite minority status, Asians also lack the legacy of disadvantage of blacks that make them eligible beneficiaries of affirmative action. Their labor market disadvantage coupled with their exclusion from affirmative action programs place Asians in a unique bind: do they support policies that give preferences to blacks but exclude them? Given their self- and group interests, this bind should make Asians unlikely to do so. We assess whether this is the …

Two Essays On And With DōGen, Conor J. Loy, Owen Crum Sep 2019

Two Essays On And With DōGen, Conor J. Loy, Owen Crum

Denison Journal of Religion

Zen Master Dōgen (1200-1253) is one of the most important Japanese Buddhist philosophers in medieval Japan. The first essay is a short introduction to Dōgen and the significance of his teachings in the 21st century. Reading Dōgen’s “Mountains and Rivers Sūtra,” Owen Crum and Conor Loy emphasize the importance of recognizing Buddha-nature in every living being as a way to overcome environmental destruction. Both authors understand that Dōgen’s teachings of universal Buddha-nature challenge anthropocentric views on nature and allow people in the twenty-first century to ask pressing ethical and religious questions in new and compelling ways.

Keeping Up With Hanuman: Reimagining The Myth Of Hanuman Through Animation, Mrinalini Mitra Sep 2019

Keeping Up With Hanuman: Reimagining The Myth Of Hanuman Through Animation, Mrinalini Mitra

Denison Journal of Religion

Hanuman (2005) distinguished itself from the previous films by mimicking and adopting an animation style that was adopted in Western superhero movies and cartoons. The favorable response of the Indian community and diaspora to the movie Hanuman coupled with the fact that Hanuman had previously been adapted in basic arcade and online games as the main hero, inspired the Indian digital gaming industry. This essay analyzes the popularity of the ‘animated’ Hanuman and the Indian audiences eagerness to ingest Hanuman’s stories through animation. What makes Hanuman appealing to new media genres, like animation, in the Indian sub-continent? How do the …

Jim Crow Jesus, Sky Paxton Sep 2019

Jim Crow Jesus, Sky Paxton

Denison Journal of Religion

With an attention to womanist theological critiques of hetero-patriarchal-white- sexist America especially from Kelly Brown Douglas, this essay deconstructs the images of the white Christ and reconstructs the Black Christ. The Black Christ was born out of Blacks’ critical awareness of white exceptionalism, experiences of historical racism, and gender and sexuality-sensitive approach to Christian theology. Finally, Paxton suggests a Black female gay as the radical embodiment of the Christ in the 21st century America.

The Economics Of The Guru, Margaret Mahoney Sep 2019

The Economics Of The Guru, Margaret Mahoney

Denison Journal of Religion

This essay studies “Gurus,” specifically the globalization of Hinduism that has spread Hindu spiritual practices in the West and also influenced the practices in In- dia. In the United States, a focus on the self and individualism is a trait commonly found which has led to an increase in mindfulness practices. These practices travel around the world and are changed in the process, then come back to the “East” as comodified practices. Many modern gurus have latched onto traditionally Hindu practices and teachings and sell their own version of it in lectures and products that promise its consumers a better …

Gaston’S Economic, Religious And Political Intersectionality, Jack Droke Sep 2019

Gaston’S Economic, Religious And Political Intersectionality, Jack Droke

Denison Journal of Religion

Gaston county, North Carolina provides a perfect case to explore the intersectionality of the economy, politics, and religion that dominates power structures on a national scale. With an attention to the Loray Mill strike of 1929, this paper theologically analyzes the relationship between neoliberal economy and the prosperity gospel and questions whether the church is a setting of concessions when it should be acting as a voice for its constituents, regardless of what the upper class desires or has constructed.

What "Makes" A Religion?: Interactions Of Orthodoxy And Orthopraxy In Hinduism, Eva Rosenthal Sep 2019

What "Makes" A Religion?: Interactions Of Orthodoxy And Orthopraxy In Hinduism, Eva Rosenthal

Denison Journal of Religion

This paper explores the complexities of the following question: In being Hindu, in what ways does one "practice" and in what ways does one "believe?" To what extent are ancient texts considered an un-debatable "source" for faith in divine presence? Gaining an understanding of what these texts are and how exactly they relate to both ritual and belief (because, as we will come to find, both ritual and belief are present in every facet of Hindu worship; what we are looking at is their interaction with one another and which seems to be of more importance in each given circumstance) …

A Necropolitical Analysis Of American Military Recruitment, Sarah Curtin Sep 2019

A Necropolitical Analysis Of American Military Recruitment, Sarah Curtin

Denison Journal of Religion

In light of postcolonial theorist Achille Mbembe’s idea of necropolitics or sovereignty’s right to kill, Curtin historically and ethically analyzes American military recruitment from a draft to an all-volunteer-force. Defining soldiering as a form of necropolitical labor because soldiers, especially low-ranked soldiers, jeopardize their own lives while carrying out their jobs at war, the author ethically suggests that (1) war must be understood as a path to death, (2) the U.S. should slowly downsize its military, and (3) religion such as Christianity must accentuate life over death.

Film On Paper, Graphics On Screen, Feminism In Story: An Exegesis Of A Feminist Graphic Novel Project, Jingwei Xu

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

This research is the second stage of my entire graphic novel practice looking at a feminist topic – women’s awakening from marriage. In this phase, the study carries out the practical process of the creative work, involving a graphic novel (body), an opening title (hook) and a package of visual communication design (promotion), in order to convey my feminist claim that women’s real emancipation depends on whether they can rouse their subject awareness and break through the chain of marriage. Based on this practice-led research, my personal knowledge is generated, including the value of combining graphic novels and title sequences, …

The Image Consciousness In Literary Criticism Of Fu In Ancient China, Jie Xu Sep 2019

The Image Consciousness In Literary Criticism Of Fu In Ancient China, Jie Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Image consciousness in literary criticism in ancient China is most prominent in the criticism of Fu (Rhapsody), which can be seen from Liu Xie's "describing objects as they appear" in "Interpreting the Genre Rhapsody" (501-2 A.D.) to Zhu Guangqian's comment that "Rhapsody is akin to pictures" in On Poetry (1943). The imagist representation in the criticism tradition involves a way of "picturely" thinking developed from the fusion of verbal and pictorial horizons, with theoretical basis in rhapsody's linguistic characteristic of graphic description and the aesthetic configuration on objects and images. The image-representing way of thinking and the graphic criticism of …

"If There Is No God, Nothing Is Permitted At All": Žižek On Cyberspace, Yuchen Dai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Cyberspace and virtual reality are two topical concepts in new media studies. Among diverse discourses, Slavoj Žižek's critique of cyberspace is highly prominent. In constrast to the mainstream technological determinism, Žižek argues that the rise of cyberspace initiates an era characterized by "the retreat of big Other," and without the Other that functions as the Master to safeguard the norm for individual's actions. This ressesion of Master's function means, as Žižek claims in light of Lacanian psychoanalysis, that the subject will not be informed of what should be desired, and the subject is thus deprived of the access to effective …

Herder On Sculpture: Touching, Tactility And Body, Yanping Gao Sep 2019

Herder On Sculpture: Touching, Tactility And Body, Yanping Gao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This article aims to elucidate Herder's main theory on sculpture that sculpture is a tactile art, and also tries to construct Herder's implicit theory on "tactility". It argues that Herder's haptic quality is much embodied, and could be divides into two categories, the emphatic and the abstract, the thickly embodied and the thinly embodied. Towards the end this article will demonstrate that the domination of the former nevertheless leads to Herder's partial blindness on the tactility of different sculptures.

Intersemiotic Intertextuality, Verbal-Independent Visual Transcendence, And Visual Criticism: A Study Of Intertextuality In The Drawing Of Seven Sages Of The Bamboo Grove, Yuqin Zhang Sep 2019

Intersemiotic Intertextuality, Verbal-Independent Visual Transcendence, And Visual Criticism: A Study Of Intertextuality In The Drawing Of Seven Sages Of The Bamboo Grove, Yuqin Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Taking intersemiotic intertextual play in the drawing of Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove as an example, this article investigates the intertwinement between language and image, a research topic worth a theoretical discussion, too, in the area of contemporary literary theory. This drawing generated with reference to the anecdotes of "Seven Sages" in ancient China is more a cultural marker of literature and art developed during the dynasties of Wei and Jin and thereafter than the epitome of unruly and indulged refined scholars. Apart from the verbal-dependent visual intertextuality, found within the drawing is the verbal-independent transcendence of the visual, …
