Using Sheep Psychology To Guide Sheep Policy, Ralph Adolphs

Marino & Merskin’s valuable review of the literature on sheep cognition shows how entrenched common views of these animals’ mental lives are disputed by the research literature. Yet the evidence they muster faces three challenges that their target article does not discuss: (1) the behavioral tasks are strongly anthropocentric; (2) neuroscientific data are absent; and (3) applications are not discussed. I touch on all three of these here.

Marino & Merskin present compelling evidence that many stereotypes of sheep are incorrect. One factor that may play an important role in animal stereotyping is the physical appearance of animals, which can directly lead to stereotyping through automatic mental processes. Sheep have a round and babyish appearance that directly evokes judgments of warmth and docility. Depictions of sheep in art, and especially cartoons, reinforce this stereotype.

If a change is going to occur in the care and management of domestic sheep, there needs to be a collaborative effort across many disciplines. This review by Marino & Merskin of the literature on cognitive processing in domestic sheep is limited by the inherent bias of the authors, including the impracticable goal of eliminating sheep production. Animal welfare concerns about the management of commercial sheep are valid; however, in order to make a difference, we need to develop an application for this knowledge about cognitive abilities in sheep.

ภาพตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุไทยที่สื่อผ่านกลวิธีทางภาษาในวาทกรรมสื่อสาธารณะ, ธีระ บุษบกแก้ว

ประเด็นเรื่องผู้สูงอายุได้รับความสนใจจากนักวิชาการหลายสาขาเพราะสังคมไทยได้เข้าสู่สังคมผู้สูงอายุแล้ว งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ภาพตัวแทนของผู้สูงอายุที่สื่อผ่านกลวิธีทางภาษาในวาทกรรมสื่อสาธารณะในสังคมไทย 2 ประเภท ได้แก่ หนังสือพิมพ์ และรายการโทรทัศน์ ข้อมูลที่ใช้ศึกษาคือปี พ.ศ. 2559 โดยใช้กรอบแนวคิดวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์ของแฟร์คลัฟ (Fairclough, 1995) ผลการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทพบว่า วาทกรรมหนังสือพิมพ์ขับเน้นภาพตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุด้านลบ กล่าวคือมองผู้สูงอายุในฐานะผู้ที่ไม่สามารถดูแลตัวเองได้ เป็นผู้พึ่งพาความช่วยเหลือจากรัฐและสังคม อีกทั้งยังเป็นปัญหาและภาระที่รัฐต้องแก้ไข การเน้นนำเสนอภาพดังกล่าวมากเป็นพิเศษเป็นการมองภาพแบบเหมารวม ภาพดังกล่าวอาจ ทำให้เกิดเป็น “วาทกรรมแห่งความกลัว” ในสังคมไทย คือทำให้เกิดความกลัวความชรา หรือปฏิเสธความแก่ ความชรา ในขณะที่วาทกรรมรายการโทรทัศน์พยายามนำเสนอภาพด้านบวกของผู้สูงอายุขึ้นมาแข่งขันเพื่อปฏิเสธความคิดด้านลบของคนในสังคม กล่าวคือ ผู้สูงอายุเป็นกลุ่มทรัพยากรบุคคลที่มีคุณค่าและมีพลังร่วมสร้างสังคมไทยได้ ภาพดังกล่าวสอดคล้องไปกับทิศทางของหน่วยงานรัฐ คือเน้นให้ผู้สูงอายุพึ่งพาตัวเองและทำประโยชน์ต่าง ๆ ทั้งนี้จะได้ไม่เป็นภาระของรัฐ ขณะเดียวกันก็นำเสนอภาพผู้สูงอายุเพียงกลุ่มเดียวคือ กลุ่มที่มีความสามารถช่วยสังคมได้จึงอาจสร้างภาพเหมารวมผู้สูงอายุในบางแง่มุม ภาพตัวแทนเหล่านี้สื่อผ่านกลวิธีทางภาษา 6 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การเลือกใช้คำอ้างถึง การใช้ชนิดกระบวนการ การนิยาม การให้รายละเอียด การแนะความ การใช้สหบท ทั้งนี้ภาพตัวแทนจากสื่อทั้งสองกลุ่มมิได้นำเสนอภาพผู้สูงอายุในฐานะปู่ย่าตายายที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในครอบครัว อาทิ บทบาทผู้ดูแลบ้านและเลี้ยงดูลูกหลาน บทบาทผู้ให้การพึ่งพา บทบาทผู้แนะนำสั่งสอน ด้านการวิเคราะห์วิถีปฏิบัติทางวาทกรรมพบว่า วาทกรรมหนังสือพิมพ์และวาทกรรมรายการโทรทัศน์ ที่ถ่ายทอดออกไปสู่สังคมต่างก็มีรัฐเป็นผู้อยู่เบื้องหลังวาทกรรม ดังนั้นภาพตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุที่ถูกผลิตขึ้นจึงสนองไปกับนโยบายของรัฐ ด้านการวิเคราะห์วิถีปฏิบัติทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมพบว่า ปัจจัยทางสังคม ได้แก่ สถานการณ์สังคมสูงอายุ นโยบายรัฐและกฎหมายที่เกี่ยวกับผู้สูงอายุ การแพทย์และสาธารณสุข แนวคิดที่มีอยู่ในสังคมวัฒนธรรมไทย แนวคิดเรื่องความกตัญญู ความอาวุโส คุณค่าของผู้สูงอายุ และอิทธิพลจากสหประชาชาติ มีอิทธิพลต่อการผลิต ตัวบท ขณะเดียวกันภาพตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุที่สื่อผ่านตัวบทก็อาจส่งผลต่อความคิดความเชื่อของคนในสังคมด้วยเช่นกัน กล่าวโดยสรุป ผลการศึกษานี้เผยให้เห็นว่าภาพตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุในวาทกรรมสื่อสาธารณะทั้งสองประเภทถูกเลือกสรรเฉพาะบางด้านมานำเสนอให้โดดเด่นตามอุดมการณ์หรือจุดยืนที่ผู้ผลิตวาทกรรมมีอยู่ การตระหนักรู้ภาพตัวแทนผู้สูงอายุที่ถูกนำเสนอในวาทกรรมสื่อสาธารณะนี้อาจทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจประเด็นผู้สูงอายุมากขึ้น

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์แนวคิดในการสร้างคติชนทหารอากาศไทย อัตลักษณ์ของทหารอากาศไทยที่ประกอบสร้างจากคติชนทหารอากาศไทย และวิเคราะห์บทบาทหน้าที่ของคติชนทหารอากาศไทยในสถาบันการศึกษาและการฝึกทางทหาร กองทัพอากาศไทย 3 แห่ง คือ โรงเรียนนายเรืออากาศนวมินทกษัตริยาธิราช โรงเรียนการบิน และหน่วยบัญชาการอากาศโยธิน โดยเก็บข้อมูลระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2557-2561 ผู้วิจัยได้ประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดเรื่องอัตลักษณ์และแนวคิดเรื่องบทบาทหน้าที่ของคติชนเป็นแนวคิดหลักในการศึกษา ผลการศึกษาพบคติชนทหารอากาศไทยจำนวน 5 ประเภท ได้แก่ 1) ประเพณีและพิธี 2) วิถีปฏิบัติ 3) บทเพลง 4) เรื่องเล่า และ 5) ความเชื่อและวัตถุมงคล และจัดกลุ่มตามผู้สร้างคติชนได้ 2 กลุ่มสำคัญ คือ คติชนสถาบันกองทัพอากาศ และคติชนกลุ่มทหารอากาศ จากการวิเคราะห์แนวคิดในการสร้างคติชนทหารอากาศไทยพบว่าสถาบันกองทัพอากาศและกลุ่มทหารอากาศมีแนวคิดในการสร้างคติชน 10 แนวคิด คือ 1) แนวคิดเรื่องความเข้มแข็งอดทนของร่างกายและจิตใจ 2) แนวคิดเรื่องความกล้าหาญและเสียสละ 3) แนวคิดเรื่องความจงรักภักดีต่อสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ และความรักชาติ ศาสนา 4) แนวคิดเรื่องความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันและความผูกพัน 5) แนวคิดเรื่องการมีเกียรติศักดิ์และวินัยทหาร 6) แนวคิดเรื่องการลำดับชั้นและอาวุโสทางทหาร 7) แนวคิดเรื่องการรับวัฒนธรรมทหารอากาศสากล 8) แนวคิดเรื่องการมีศักยภาพสูงและความภาคภูมิใจในความเป็นทหารอากาศ 9) แนวคิดเรื่องการสร้างขวัญและกำลังใจ และ 10) แนวคิดเรื่องการแหวกกฎ ข้อบังคับ และขนบจารีต ซึ่งเป็นแนวคิดที่พบเฉพาะในการสร้างคติชนกลุ่มทหารอากาศ การวิเคราะห์อัตลักษณ์ของทหารอากาศไทยที่ประกอบสร้างจากคติชนชนทหารอากาศไทยพบว่ามีด้วยกัน 5 ประการ คือ 1) ทหารอากาศผู้เข้มแข็งอดทนและกล้าหาญเสียสละที่ควรแก่การภาคภูมิใจ 2) ทหารอากาศผู้จงรักภักดีและมีความผูกพันต่อสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ 3) ทหารอากาศผู้มีเพื่อนและพี่น้อง 4) ทหารอากาศผู้ชาญฉลาดและเป็นนักรบปกป้องน่านฟ้าไทย และ 5) ทหารอากาศผู้มีศักยภาพทัดเทียมทหารอากาศสากล ทั้งนี้ อัตลักษณ์ของผู้เข้มแข็งอดทน อัตลักษณ์ของผู้จงรักภักดีและผูกพันต่อสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ และอัตลักษณ์ของผู้มีเพื่อนและพี่น้องเป็นอัตลักษณ์ที่ทหารอากาศไทยมีร่วมกับทหารเหล่าทัพอื่น ส่วนอัตลักษณ์ของผู้ชาญฉลาดและเป็นนักรบปกป้องน่านฟ้าไทยเป็นอัตลักษณ์ที่พบเฉพาะกลุ่มทหารอากาศไทย อัตลักษณ์ของผู้จงรักภักดีต่อสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ทำให้ทหารอากาศไทยมีความแตกต่างจากทหารอากาศสากล นอกจากนี้คติชนทหารอากาศไทยมีบทบาทในการสร้างความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันจากการมีความทรงจำร่วมกัน บทบาทในการสร้างความมั่นคงทางใจในช่วงการเปลี่ยนผ่านและการปฏิบัติหน้าที่เสี่ยงภัย และบทบาทในการปลดปล่อยความตึงเครียดและเติมเต็มความต้องการทางใจ การศึกษาคติชนกับการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ของทหารอากาศไทยนอกจากทำให้เห็นการผสมผสานระหว่างความเป็นนักรบไทยและความเป็นทหารในกองทัพสมัยใหม่ ยังทำให้เห็นบทบาทหน้าที่สำคัญของคติชนต่อการสร้างทหารของกองทัพอากาศไทยที่มีลักษณะพึงประสงค์

งานวิจัยเรื่อง วิวัฒนาการลวดลายประดับสถาปัตยกรรมร่วมแบบเขมรสู่แรงบันดาลใจในการตกแต่งสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยใหม่ในเขตพื้นที่จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิวัฒนาการ คติความเชื่อ และรูปแบบลวดลายสลักตกแต่งสถาปัตยกรรมศิลปะร่วมแบบเขมรที่มีอิทธิพลต่อ ศาสนสถานและสถาปัตยกรรมร่วมสมัยในเขตพื้นที่จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ ตลอดจนกระบวนการคิด ภูมิปัญญาของช่างโบราณในอดีตที่ปรับเปลี่ยน มาสู่การสร้างสรรค์ในยุคปัจจุบัน จากการศึกษาพบว่า คติความเชื่อและรูปแบบในการสร้างสรรค์ลายจําหลักตกแต่ง สถาปัตยกรรมสมัยใหม่มีการปรับเปลี่ยนจากศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดูมาเป็นพุทธศาสนา ตลอดจน นําไปสู่การพัฒนาลวดลายหลากหลายรูปแบบ ดังนั้นรูปแบบและวิวัฒนาการของลายประดับ ตกแต่งสถาปัตยกรรมจึงเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามคติความเชื่อของผู้สร้าง รวมทั้งกระบวนการคิด สร้างสรรค์ลวดลายของช่างสมัยใหม่ที่มิได้มีความแตกต่างจากช่างเขมรโบราณ โดยลายสลักที่ สามารถตรวจสอบหรือกําหนดรูปแบบได้ คือ ลวดลายสลักจากทับหลังและ เสาประดับกรอบประตู

การวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยและพัฒนา มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาและถ่ายทอดความสำคัญของความคิดถึง ความรัก ความอบอุ่นภายในครอบครัวในแง่ของจิตวิญญาณและความผูกพันระหว่างบุคคล วิเคราะห์และตีความเพื่อสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจิตรกรรมบนผ้าใบ 2) ศึกษาการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจิตรกรรมบนผ้าใบที่ถ่ายทอดออกมาจากความคิดถึง ความรักและความอบอุ่นภายในครอบครัว จากและสบการณ์ของศิลปินในยุคสมัยต่างๆ 3) สร้างสรรค์ผลงานจิตรกรรมบนผ้าใบที่ถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกออกมาจากประสบการณ์ตรง “จันทบุรี: จากห้วงคำนึงคิดถึงบ้านสู่งานจิตรกรรมบนผ้าใบ” เป็นผลงานวิจัยที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากความตั้งใจที่จะสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความรัก ความสำคัญและความผูกพันของครอบครัว โดยถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวของวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่และ อัตลักษณ์ของคนในครอบครัวที่เป็นคนพื้นถิ่นในจังหวัดจันทบุรี ผ่านผลงานจิตกรรมบนผืนผ้าใบ กระบวนการวิจัยเริ่มจากการศึกษาและรวบรวมข้อมูลที่สะท้อนให้เห็นความคิดถึง ความรัก และความอบอุ่นภายในครอบครัว ทั้งในแง่ของจิตวิทยาสังคมและสุนทรียศาสตร์ จากการศึกษาค้นคว้าและจากประสบการณ์ในอดีต โดยมีสาระสำคัญเกี่ยวข้องกับบุคคลในครอบครัวที่ผู้วิจัยรักและผูกพัน เมื่อศึกษาข้อมูลดังกล่าวแล้ว พบว่าความรู้สึกรักและคิดถึงเป็นเพียงกระบวนการหนึ่งที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้นและยึดติดอยู่กับมัน เพื่อเป็นเครื่องยึดเหนี่ยวจิตใจและความสบายใจ แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้วมนุษย์ไม่ได้คำนึงว่าความรู้สึกสบายใจนั้นไม่สามารถดำรงอยู่ได้ตลอดไป จึงทำให้ผู้วิจัยเข้าใจกระบวนการความคิดที่เกิดขึ้นทั้งหมดนี้และได้ถ่ายทอดความคิดและความรู้สึกสู่ผลงานจิตรกรรมบนผืนผ้าใบ

ไตรภูมิโลกสัณฐาน เป็นเรื่องราวที่กล่าวถึงโลกและจักรวาลตามคติพุทธศาสนา มีที่มาจากพระไตรปิฎกและคัมภีร์ฉบับต่างๆ ซึ่งแพร่หลายในประเทศที่นับถือพุทธศาสนา สำหรับงานศิลปกรรมในประเทศไทยนั้นมักปรากฏเนื้อหาในภาพจิตรกรรมซึ่งพบหลักฐานตั้งแต่ครึ่งหลังพุทธศตวรรษที่ 22 ทั้งในรูปแบบ จิตรกรรมฝาผนังและจิตรกรรมสมุดภาพ โครงการวิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการศึกษาเชิงวิเคราะห์จิตรกรรมไตรภูมิโลกสัณฐาน พระวิหารวัดสุทัศน เทพวราราม กรุงทพมหานคร ซึ่งเขียนขึ้นราวครึ่งหลังของพุทธศตวรรษที่ 24 นับเป็นจิตรกรรมไตรภูมิโลกสัณฐาน สมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้นที่มีรูปแบบเป็นเอกลักณ์เฉพาะ โดยปรับเปลี่ยนตําแหน่งจิตรกรรมจากขนบเดิมที่เขียน บนฝาผนังซึ่งเป็นมุมมองระนาบเดียวในลักษณะสองมิติ ให้กลายเป็นจิตรกรรมบนเสาพระวิหารทั้งสี่ด้าน จํานวน 4 คู่ หรือ 8 ต้น รวมเป็นภาพจิตรกรรมบนเหลี่ยมเสาทั้ง 32 เหลี่ยม ลักษณะดังกล่าวนี้ทําให้เกิดมุมมองที่ต่างระนาบในพื้นที่สามมิติ ตลอดจนมีลําดับและองค์ประกอบที่ซับซ้อนมากขึ้น จากผลการศึกษาพบว่าจิตรกรรมไตรภูมิโลกสัณฐานบนเสาพระวิหารวัดสุทัศนเทพวรารามมี ความสัมพันธ์กับจิตรกรรมต้นแบบในอดีต ได้แก่ จิตรกรรมไตรภูมิในหอพระไตรปิฎกวัดระฆังโฆษิตารามซึ่งเขียน ขึ้นในสมัยธนบุรี-รัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น และสมุดภาพไตรภูมิฉบับต่างๆ ตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ธนบุรี และรัตนโกสินทร์ พุทธศตวรรษที่ 22-24 ทั้งในเรื่องการลําดับองค์ประกอบภาพ เนื้อหาเรื่องราว ตลอดจนรูปแบบของศิลปกรรม นอกจากนี้เนื้อหาของภาพจิตรกรรมดังกล่าวยังเชื่อมโยงกับวรรณกรรมพุทธศาสนา เช่น พระไตรปิฎก คัมภีร์ อรรถกถา คัมภีร์หมวดโลกศาสตร์ ตลอดจนวรรณกรรมหมวดอื่นๆ เช่น วรรณกรรมบันเทิงคดี และปกรณัมนิทาน
