Writing Across the Curriculum
As I walked through the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, I was struck by this painting by Charles Willson Peale. Among all the portraits in the grand room of American paintings, this one in particular has so much going on; from the background and setting to just the few small things in Deborah McClenachan’s hands there was clearly a lot that the artist wanted to portray about this eighteen-year old girl.

Art In The Museum, Christopher Janneck
Writing Across the Curriculum
I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art (“the Met”) found at 1000 Fifth Avenue in New York City on Saturday, September 15, 2018, during a visit home. Although there was substantial traffic because of a German Heritage parade, it was a beautiful day to visit a magnificent museum. Everything about the Met is grand, including its entrance lobby and its artwork. I passed a few hours wandering the different halls with my family, while taking pictures and notes for this assignment. Some of my favorites during this visit was the Heavenly Bodies exhibit and the many halls filled by American …

Cultural Tightness-Looseness: Its Nature And Missiological Applications, David R. Dunaetz
Cultural Tightness-Looseness: Its Nature And Missiological Applications, David R. Dunaetz
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The focus of much missionary work concerns sharing the gospel with others so that they may put their faith in Jesus Christ. However, members of some cultures are much more resistant to this than are members of other cultures. The concept of cultural tightness-looseness helps explain why some cultures are more closed to the gospel than are others. Tight cultures, in contrast to loose cultures, have strong social norms, violations of which are met with intense sanctions. Numerous recent studies reveal the antecedents, consequences, and the geographical distribution of cultural tightness-looseness. There are important missiological implications at the societal level, …
Human Freedom And The Invisible Church From The Viewpoint Of Bavinck's Pneumatology, Dong-Yaul Tae
Human Freedom And The Invisible Church From The Viewpoint Of Bavinck's Pneumatology, Dong-Yaul Tae
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
Although Reformed pneumatology is generally recognized by scholars of Calvin and Reformed confessions to be relatively well developed compared to the various pneumatologies of the Western theological tradition, it faces two important challenges. First, Reformed pneumatology is directly linked to the critique that Reformed soteriology’s accentuation of predestination and effectual grace leads to inevitable fatalism that ignores human freedom. This is because the ministry of the Holy Spirit is crucial in the Reformed understanding of the order of salvation beginning with regeneration and ending with glorification. Second, because the ministry of the Holy Spirit is a key to understanding Reformed …

Tracing "Fake News:" The Printing Press, Social Media, And Politics, Aine Doyle
The Criterion
During the 2016 presidential election, “fake news” became a hot topic that shattered the American public’s trust of traditional news outlets and creating even deeper rifts between the two major political parties. Although the election made the American public acutely aware of “fake news”, the practice of appropriating images and quotations and manipulating information to influence public opinion can be traced back to the beginnings of the printing press. In this essay, I discuss how the phenomena of the printing press sets a precedent for other literacy tools—including social media—in how government and religious institutions used it to assert hold …
