Para Los Hijos Y Nuestro Futuro: Reconceptualizing Costa Rican Identity Through The Civil War, Amberlyn Britt Jan 2019

Para Los Hijos Y Nuestro Futuro: Reconceptualizing Costa Rican Identity Through The Civil War, Amberlyn Britt

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

After the 1948 Civil War, Costa Rican people redefined their society and democracy, and created a nation that, unlike many others in the region, was able to withstand pressures toward corruption and violence. By examining personal narratives, this study observes how various groups such as Costa Rican men, women, and Afro-West Indians related to the nation‟s traditions of democracy and its identity of exceptionalism. In 1948, Costa Ricans fought against a government that they viewed as corrupt and oppressive to secure a better future for not only themselves, but for all of Costa Rica.

The Disorderly Female: Alcohol, Prostitution And Moral Insanity In 19th-Century Fremantle, Alexandra Wallis

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Mary Jane Hayes was a “deviant” woman—a “drunken prostitute” who was in and out of both the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum and Fremantle Prison from 1871 to 1898. One of twelve women in the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum records to have been referred to as a prostitute, Mary Jane was particularly reviled: her alcohol consumption and unsavoury lifestyle were often blamed as the cause of her violent behaviour and insanity. Prison and asylum records reveal several arrests for drunkenness and vagrancy, with an estimated 67 convictions; newspaper articles also depict her numerous convictions for indecent behaviour, obscene language and larceny. Mary Jane …

Barriers To Belief: Mental Distress And Disaffection From The Church, Steve Densley Jr., Geret Giles

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

People leave the Church for a variety of reasons. Of all the reasons why people leave, one that has attracted little or no attention is the influence of mental distress. People who experience anxiety or depression see things differently than those who do not. Recognizing that people with mental distress have a different experience with church than others may help us to make adjustments that can prevent some amount of disaffection from the Church. This article takes a first step in identifying ways that mental distress can affect church activity and in presenting some of the things that individuals, friends, …

Gillian Smith, VCU Interior Design BFA 2022, selected the ICA Elevator pattern for the 2019 Pattern Research Project. The text below is excerpted from the student’s work:

Love And Respect As Moral Attitudes And Practices Of Recognition, Erica Stonestreet Jan 2019

Love And Respect As Moral Attitudes And Practices Of Recognition, Erica Stonestreet

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Beginning from the premise that moral deliberation and action have their roots in the recognition of persons, this paper argues that love deserves to stand on equal footing with respect as a mode of moral recognition. I argue first that as attitudes, respect and love are modes of moral recognition responding to specific others. They thus have similar epistemologies, but are distinguished by their positions along a concrete-abstract axis. In particular, I claim, respect is an attitude that recognizes another as a person, whereas love is an attitude that recognizes another as the person they are. Both attitudes check the …

How Consumer Behavior In The 1930’S-1940’S Differed From Today, John Krusinski Jan 2019

How Consumer Behavior In The 1930’S-1940’S Differed From Today, John Krusinski

Writing Across the Curriculum

Over the years, consumer behavior has undergone a major evolution in terms of how people buy their products and what influences them. What was once limited by word of mouth and limited availability has now exploded into a major component of everyday life. In order to get more info on what consumer life was like before now, I conducted an interview with my grandmother, Mary Jane Krusinski, to see what consumer life was back in her time as well as her perceptions of consumer life today. However, the answers she gave may surprise some as her life as a consumer …

Yoga: Paths To Pain And Peace, Avni Kapadia

Writing Across the Curriculum

Hindus, by virtue of being part of a religion that varies tremendously amongst its followers in regards to beliefs and practices, have an understanding that there are many paths to enlightenment. Hindu scriptures and people acknowledge a concept known as karma. In this context, karma is a system of consequences related to actions. Actions performed during one lifetime determine the quality of the next life. This cycle of death and rebirth is known as samsara. Moksha is liberation from this cycle of reincarnation, through enlightenment. The paths of liberation from samsara include the path of devotion, the path of …
