Property Rights, Citizenship, Corruption, And Inequality: Confiscating Loyalist Estates During The American Revolution, Marcus Gallo
Property Rights, Citizenship, Corruption, And Inequality: Confiscating Loyalist Estates During The American Revolution, Marcus Gallo
2019 Faculty Bibliography
In Maryland, fierce debate attended the decision to confiscate loyalist lands, but the state eventually embraced confiscation, seizing significantly more loyalist land than neighbors who had access to lands in the trans-Appalachian west. State senators who initially objected to property confiscations found themselves forced by necessity to adopt a revolutionary view of subjecthood, in which loyalists who abandoned the state voluntarily abrogated their citizenship. While some irregularity surrounded Maryland's confiscations, this paled in comparison to the corruption that attended confiscation in neighboring states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey. However, as in other confiscations, the state's political and military officers came …

Lt. Ethel Weed Through Her Letters: The Personal Reflections Of A Woman In The U.S. Occupation Of Japan, Malia Mcandrew
2019 Faculty Bibliography
Ethel Weed (1906-1975) was one of the few American women who devised and implemented U.S. foreign policy during the U.S. occupation of Japan from 1945-1952. As Chief Women's Information Officer she was in charge of all initiatives aimed at the "democratization" Japanese women. While previous works on Ethel Weed have examined her public persona, this article turns to her private thoughts by examining letters that Weed wrote home during her time in Japan. These letters show that Weed drew great inspiration from the Japanese women with whom she worked during the occupation. As this article contends that Weed was awed …

The American Yawp, Joseph Locke, Ben Wright
The American Yawp, Joseph Locke, Ben Wright
Open Educational Resources Collection
The American Yawp constructs a coherent and accessible narrative from all the best of recent historical scholarship. Without losing sight of politics and power, it incorporates transnational perspectives, integrates diverse voices, recovers narratives of resistance, and explores the complex process of cultural creation. It looks for America in crowded slave cabins, bustling markets, congested tenements, and marbled halls. It navigates between maternity wards, prisons, streets, bars, and boardrooms. Whitman’s America, like ours, cut across the narrow boundaries that strangle many narratives. Balancing academic rigor with popular readability, The American Yawp offers a multi-layered, democratic alternative to the American past.

Thomas Reid And Molyneux;S Question: Visual And Tactile Perception, Kristen Lundberg
Thomas Reid And Molyneux;S Question: Visual And Tactile Perception, Kristen Lundberg
Bouwsma Paper Contest
In this paper, I consider a Reidian answer to a question originally posed to John Locke by the Irish scientist William Molyneux in the year 1688. The issues that underlie this question are issues concerning the nature of visual and tactile perception and the concepts occasioned in these sensory modalities. | consider these issues according to Reid’s theory of perception and investigate how Reid’s answer to Molyneux’s Question anticipates contemporary empirical research. After a brief consideration of leading studies that attempt to address Molyneux’s Question empirically, | conclude that no adequate methods for empirically addressing the question currently exist. Management As A Christian Liberal Art, Daniel Castelo
Management As A Christian Liberal Art, Daniel Castelo
Pollard Research Fellowship Papers
C. William Pollard, the long-time serving past CEO of The ServiceMaster Company, was often inclined to remark that “management is a liberal art.” This is a phrase attributable to one of Pollard’s friends and consultants, Peter Drucker, the pioneer of the academic discipline of management. Several features of the phrase are worth noting. First of all, few managers or specialists in the field would be inclined to speak of management in this way; therefore, the phrase stands as a kind of anomaly, as an odd remark in the face of “conventional” thinking in which profit and the maximization of shareholder …
Honoring God And Developing People: Servicemaster, Bill Pollard And The Heart Of The Corporation, Darrell Cosden
Honoring God And Developing People: Servicemaster, Bill Pollard And The Heart Of The Corporation, Darrell Cosden
Pollard Research Fellowship Papers
This study examines the model of faith-business integration developed at ServiceMaster, and relatedly Bill Pollard’s role in developing and implementing it. My argument is that ServiceMaster’s celebrated 4 corporate goals functioned both as a mission statement defining the core of the business, but at the same time also as “philosophy of Christian ministry” infusing their core business with the Christian faith. As used, the 4 goals functioned as a faith-business integration model in its own right, deserving a place alongside other models and thereby deserving reflective analysis and evaluation. To that end, this study examines how the model came to …
Re-Personalising Work And Business: Bill Pollard And Servicemaster's Narrative Of Continuity Through Change, Gordon Preece
Re-Personalising Work And Business: Bill Pollard And Servicemaster's Narrative Of Continuity Through Change, Gordon Preece
Pollard Research Fellowship Papers
This paper addresses the Re-Personalising of Work and Business by Bill Pollard, the long-serving CEO and Chair of the U.S. and global service industry giant ServiceMaster. It uses two frameworks to shed greater light on this story. The first framework is Michael Goldberg’s Narratival Ethics Audit, which explores the role of character/virtue reinforced through connections to story via rituals and traditions. The second framework is the Cambridge UK-based Relationship Foundation’s measure of relational proximity in terms of equality, continuity, multiplexity etc. The mega-theme running through these frameworks, as largely maintained and carried by Pollard and ServiceMaster, is that of the …
The Spectrum Of Service: Refocusing Academic Work Through A Military Lens, Brenda M. Helmbrecht, Dan Reno
The Spectrum Of Service: Refocusing Academic Work Through A Military Lens, Brenda M. Helmbrecht, Dan Reno
English
In higher education, faculty, administrators, and students often use the term “work” casually: we go to work, we do our work, and we always have work left to finish. Thus, we appreciate the journal’s editors asking us to slow down and fully consider our work as instructors and scholars in the field of composition studies. Here we explore what it means to approach work through the lens of service. While service is an essential component of academic work, we seldom explore how the two concepts inform one another. As a WPA and an Army veteran, we decided to join our …

John Toland’s Pivotal Version of Secularism at the Turn of the Eighteenth Century
John Toland (1669-1728) sustained a life-long confrontation with Christianity as well as with religion and orthodox belief in general. His unprecedented advance from Irish Catholicism to secularism and finally outright atheism played a central role in European philosophy despite its having been all but forgotten in later times. He left Ireland to attend Edinburgh University in Scotland followed by Leyden University in the Netherlands and finally a faculty position at Oxford University preceding his career as an independent author. By his early death he had published as …

Exegeting The Bible And The Social Location Of The Gospel Recipients: A Case For Worldview Transformation, Boubakar Sanou
Exegeting The Bible And The Social Location Of The Gospel Recipients: A Case For Worldview Transformation, Boubakar Sanou
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
Social location greatly influences how one reads and interprets Scripture. Therefore, for the Bible to impact the lives of its hearers and contribute to the transformation of their worldview assumptions, its interpretation and application need to be both hermeneutically sound and contextually relevant.

Cognitive Dissonance And Cosmic Conflict: A Rules-Of-Engagement Framework For Thinking About Prayer, Providence, And Evil, John C. Peckham
Cognitive Dissonance And Cosmic Conflict: A Rules-Of-Engagement Framework For Thinking About Prayer, Providence, And Evil, John C. Peckham
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
Many Christians experience severe cognitive dissonance when they try to reconcile belief that God is wholly good (omnibenevolent) and all-powerful (omnipotent) with the suffering and evil in this world. Would not anyone who is loving and kind and who is powerful enough to do so, act to prevent the horrible suffering in this world? This article attempts to address such cognitive dissonance by offering a rules-of-engagement framework for thinking about the problem of evil and the related issues of providence and prayer. Regarding providence, many ask why God does not act to prevent evils more often, or does so some …

Oneness In Everyday Life: Nonduality, Wholeness And Human Life After Awakening, Gibbons, Tom
Oneness In Everyday Life: Nonduality, Wholeness And Human Life After Awakening, Gibbons, Tom
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
In Advaita Vedanta a distinction is made between an experience of oneness and permanent awakening. The author argues that a nondual philosophy such as Advaita - as opposed to a direct experience of oneness – contains significant theoretical difficulties, which in turn are reflected in problems with actualizing nonduality in everyday human life. Alternative spiritual conceptions that might be more helpful in guiding the nondual aspirant in her spiritual life are examined, including the concept of “wholeness.” In the place of a reliance on an exclusive doctrine of nonduality, Jorge Ferrar’s concept of “Participatory Spirituality” and A. H. Almaas’s idea …
Categorical Modelling Of Conscious States, Baruss, Imants
Categorical Modelling Of Conscious States, Baruss, Imants
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
In the last several decades, there has been an explosion of research concerning consciousness with some efforts at mathematical modelling. The purpose of this paper is to model conscious states using categorical constructions. In particular, this modelling captures temporality, the intentional structure of consciousness, and meaning fields, which provide the templates for occurrent events. The architecture of conscious states naturally lends itself to applications of category theory, more specifically to sheaf-like constructions in which the stacks over a site are topoi whose germs are the objects of the topoi. Each topos represents the potential experiential content of an individual where …
Psychotherapy In The Dream: A Phenomenological Exploration, Bustos, Nick
Psychotherapy In The Dream: A Phenomenological Exploration, Bustos, Nick
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
Post-materialist ontologies offer a transformed worldview whose implications point toward the illusory nature of the separate self, or ego. Aligned with the literature of mysticism and perennialist spiritual models, this portends a significantly altered backdrop for the practice and discipline of psychotherapy, the underlying premises of which assume a strict existential dichotomy between patient and therapist. Kenneth Wapnick, preeminent scholar of the twentieth-century spiritual document of A Course in Miracles, provides a relevant model toward integrating spiritually-based, ego-negative states within psychotherapy practice. The author studied the lived experiences of eight psychotherapists, both practicing and retired, who practice according to this …

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry
This example of a research inquiry involves moving through various historical developments and statistics related to climate change (such as rising global temperatures, sea levels, ice sheets, and carbon dioxide emissions) in order to then contextualize global efforts to reduce climate change damage, such as the Paris Agreement. Throughout the research inquiry Soule uses an objective stance in presenting findings and developments ranging from the 1700s to present times, and supporting a conclusion that global devastation may be as close as 2100.

Are Vaccines The Key To Alzheimer’S Treatment? (2019-2020), Myia Tyler
CPN 101: Researched Inquiry
In this research inquiry, Tyler uses a metacognitive style of reflection walking the reader through her personal connections to topic selection and research process before presenting what she discovered in medical journal articles on the topic of using vaccines for Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention. In closely reviewing journal articles and their findings, Tyler is able to make comments about the challenges of developing a vaccine appropriate to humans (as opposed to the mice trials she reads about,) and the complexity of high failure rates in the past. Finally, Tyler comments on the financial issues involved in this treatment plan and …
