The Gender Gap In Patents: An Exploration Of Bias Against Women In Patent Attainment And “Blockchain” As Potential Remedy, Susan Stewart Stute Jan 2019

The Gender Gap In Patents: An Exploration Of Bias Against Women In Patent Attainment And “Blockchain” As Potential Remedy, Susan Stewart Stute

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Steering women toward educational paths and careers in fields of invention would seem, in theory, to be the obvious solution to closing the gap between the number of men and women filing for and being granted invention patents. Billions of dollars have been invested at the federal, state, and local levels to spur interest and competency in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning, but gender disparity in innovation workplaces persists. Studies indicate that, in addition to the educational barriers that can be and have been addressed legislatively, social and cultural influences affect outcomes for career women, as well as …

Comparative Pride, Christopher Morgan-Knapp Jan 2019

Comparative Pride, Christopher Morgan-Knapp

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Comparative pride – that is, pride in how one compares to others in some respect – is often thought to be warranted. In this paper, I argue that this common position is mistaken. The paper begins with an analysis of how things seem when a person feels pride. Pride, I claim, presents some aspect of the self with which one identifies as being worthy. Moreover, in some cases, it presents this aspect of the self as something one is responsible for. I then go on to argue that when the focus of one’s pride is comparative, things are never as …

Ncaa Athletics: What To Do With All This Money? (2019-2020), Kasey Vaughan

Analysis

In this student example we can see the moves of the analysis anchor assignment as Vaughan analyzes the debate over paying student athletes by focusing on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Her analysis uses multiple outside sources to offer support to the reader in understanding the complexity of the debate, and in particular in tracing the NCAA revenue and financial aspects involved in compensating college-level athletes.

The Case For Less Immigration Restrictions In The United States (2019-2020), Elle O’Leary Kelleher Jan 2019

The Case For Less Immigration Restrictions In The United States (2019-2020), Elle O’Leary Kelleher

Argument

In this example of an argument, Kelleher explores how the issue of immigration has been taken up in politics and policy, but rests on many misperceptions, including the negative portrayal of immigrants in popular culture ranging from 1931 to 2013. Kelleher argues for a loosening of immigration restrictions based on benefits to the United States and based on a historical sense of “American values.”

Procedural Violations In The Trial Of The Woman Taken In Adultery, Steven T. Densley Jr. Jan 2019

Procedural Violations In The Trial Of The Woman Taken In Adultery, Steven T. Densley Jr.

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The story in John 8 of the woman taken in adultery is sometimes used to argue that Jesus was lenient toward sin and that we should be too. However, when placed in its broader context, we can see the story is not one in which Christ shows indifference or contempt for the law, but rather utmost respect for it.

Introduction : Patrimoine/Cultural Heritage In France And Ireland, Eamon Maher, Eugene O'Brien Jan 2019

Introduction : Patrimoine/Cultural Heritage In France And Ireland, Eamon Maher, Eugene O'Brien

Books/Chapters

Assessing something as all-pervasive as cultural heritage can run the risk of resorting to cliches and stereotypes, even though these very things are also an integral part ofwhat constitutes the patrimoine ofany given society. The French are rightly acclaimed for their fashion, wines, gastronomy, literature, philosophy, regional specificities, architecture, and cafe culture, to name but a few ofthe Hexagone's most distinctive traits. Ireland, on the other hand, has its pubs, its writers, many ofwhom traditionally spent far too much time in the aforementioned pubs, its fighting spirit, its greenness, its historic struggle with its nearest neighbour, perfidious Albion, its beef …

Campbellites And Mormonites: Competing Restoration Movements, Roseann Benson Jan 2019

Campbellites And Mormonites: Competing Restoration Movements, Roseann Benson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

: In October 1830, Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer Jr., Parley P. Pratt, and Ziba Peterson were the first missionaries sent to travel through the western states to the Indian territory at the far reaches of the United States. Pratt, a former resident of northeastern Ohio, suggested they stop in the Kirtland, Ohio, area and visit his preacher friend, Sidney Rigdon. It was Rigdon who had earlier convinced Pratt that the restoration of the ancient order that included faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism for the remission of sins, and the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit could be …

Revisiting “Sariah” At Elephantine, Neal Rappleye Jan 2019

Revisiting “Sariah” At Elephantine, Neal Rappleye

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Jeffrey R. Chadwick has previously called attention to the name ŚRYH (Seraiah/Sariah) as a Hebrew woman’s name in the Jewish community at Elephantine. Paul Y. Hoskisson, however, felt this evidence was not definitive because part of the text was missing and had to be restored. Now a more recently published ostracon from Elephantine, which contains a sure attestation of the name ŚRYH as a woman’s name without the need of restoration, satisfies Hoskisson’s call for more definitive evidence and makes it more likely that the name is correctly restored on the papyrus f irst noticed by Chadwick. The appearance of …

The Record Of My Father, Clifford P. Jones Jan 2019

The Record Of My Father, Clifford P. Jones

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In 1 Nephi 1:16–17, Nephi tells us he is abridging “the record of my father.” The specific words Nephi uses in his writings form several basic but important patterns and features used repeatedly by Nephi and also by other Book of Mormon writers. These patterns and features provide context that appears to indicate that Nephi’s abridgment of Lehi’s record is the third-person account found in 1 Nephi 1:4 through 2:15 and that Nephi’s f irst-person account of his own ministry begins in 1 Nephi 2:16.

The Lives Of Abraham: Seeing Abraham Through The Eyes Of Second-Temple Jews, Taylor Halverson Jan 2019

The Lives Of Abraham: Seeing Abraham Through The Eyes Of Second-Temple Jews, Taylor Halverson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

During the Second-Temple Period, Jews remembered and reimagined the story of Abraham to address their own immediate historical and cultural concerns. By exploring these reimaginations, we learn more about the faith and interests of later Jews who looked to their forefather for inspiration and guidance on how to live in a world of change, opportunity, and challenge. Second Temple Jewish writers included in this article are Artapanus, the author of Jubilees; Pseudo-Eupolemus, the author of Genesis Apocryphon; Philo, and Josephus. Abraham was resurrected in these texts, but with the body and soul of the later author, Josephus; these authors live …

Reclaiming The Radical Economic Message Of Luke, David Dean Mimier King Jan 2019

Reclaiming The Radical Economic Message Of Luke, David Dean Mimier King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the four canonical gospels of the New Testament, the one most concerned with poverty, wealth, and the ethics of possession is Luke. It contains more economic material and a sharper message than do Mark, Matthew, or John. A centuries-long debate rages over just how revolutionary Luke’s message is. This dissertation employs redactional, literary, statistical, historical, and theological methodologies to recover Luke’s radical economic message, to place it in its ancient context, and to tease out its prophetic implications for today. It argues that Luke has a radical message of good news for the poor and a call for resistance …

Hope As A Strategy: Messianism In The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Levinas, Gary Ray Sunshine Jan 2019

Hope As A Strategy: Messianism In The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Levinas, Gary Ray Sunshine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This essay is an explication of the role of messianism, often expressed as hope, in the work of Emmanuel Levinas. Levinas's single philosophical project from 1933 until his passing in 1996 was to establish ethics as first philosophy. This effort was in opposition to the primacy of ontology in the work of Martin Heidegger. Levinas uses a phenomenological method similar to Heidegger's to establish messianic hope as a fundamental human motivation. Throughout Levinas's work, he borrows a religious vocabulary from his Jewish heritage that he resets into a philosophical domain. He takes a religious concept of messianism, specifically Jewish formulations …

Words, Pictures, And The “Nonlistening Space”: Visual Design And Popular Music As Forms Of Performance In First-Year Writing, Maria Lynn Soriano Jan 2019

Words, Pictures, And The “Nonlistening Space”: Visual Design And Popular Music As Forms Of Performance In First-Year Writing, Maria Lynn Soriano

2019 Faculty Bibliography

The chapter focuses on the importance of teaching visual rhetoric by examining a multimodal first-year writing course unit that asks students to create concert posters for their favorite bands or musical artists. In addition, students produce explanatory essays that translate their creation process into words, representing their imaginations on paper. Soriano discusses the ways that this unit has improved and enriched the writing of many of her students, including poster examples and supplemental materials for instructors who might want to adopt this assignment and challenge their students to invade their own “nonlistening spaces.”
