James Madison University MALA (Madison Academic Library Associates) graduate assistants worked together with Special Collections and the library’s Outreach department to help market and support JMU’s First Annual Pulp Studies Symposium in Fall 2016. Social, digital, and physical ultimately came together to highlight and surface Special Collections’ extensive holdings of pulp magazines. Hashtags, archival ephemera, and everything in between melded in this multi-part exhibit. Since one of the least known and studied genre of pulps are the romance pulps, Love Story Magazine was the focus of our social media outreach project. Jane Austen often uses reading as a way to develop her characters. For instance, in Persuasion, Captain Benwick‘s melancholic disposition is revealed through his partiality for Romantic poetry, but Anne Elliot’s value for balance is expressed when she recommends moral essays. Other times, and not unfrequently, characters’ reading choice falls on the works of William Shakespeare—such as Hamlet, which Willoughby reads to Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, and the excerpts from Elegant Extracts we learn that Northanger Abbey’s Catherine Morland has memorized.

This article revisits Latin American Liberation Theology’s «option for the poor» in light of Marcella Althaus-Reid’s theological contribution. Queer Theory and Queer Theologies have helped to critique the idealised «poor» and «option for the poor» in much of Latin American Liberation Theology. This article takes on board those critiques, but in turn it asks if Queer Theory and Queer Theologies more widely ought to include and «option for the poor» in their own methodologies.

This article seeks to analyze the relationship between the theology of liberation and sexuality critically. Without denying Latin American Liberation Theology and Feminist Theology’s influence in her thought, Marcella Althaus-Reid demonstrates exchanges between these theologies and the changes that occurred in recent years. However, both theologies arrived at a limit. It’s necessary to go beyond. This «beyond» is the Indecent Theology that inserts fluid sexuality in the contemporary theological agenda.

This article focuses on the contributions and challenges that queer theology offers to the theological world. However, it also addresses particular theological-pastoral reflection beyond the specificity of queer theologies. The article presents three aspects of queer theologies that I recognize as essential to all theological reflection. The second section develops in what sense queer theologies constitute a contribution to the «liberation of theology.» The last section points out pastoral challenges by focusing on rethinking the concept of «inclusion» as a challenge of what means to «queer» theology.

This article seeks to denounce the heteronormative model’s inconsistencies and inequalities from the perspective of queer theologies. Using the tools proposed by queer theory, these theologies seek to promote liberation so that people of sexual and gender diversity who profess a faith can be-and-stay-in-the-world in a visible and respected way. Queer theologies challenge normative structures and discourses that seek to close identities in their multiple aspects within the religious field. Thus, they help us deconstruct heteropatriarchal normative theology until that deconstruction also allows us to speak of a queer God.

An Indecent Pedagogy: Marcella Althaus-Reid Leading Theology Out Of The Closet Through Indecent Theology, Elizabeth Ingenthron

Through Indecent Theology, Marcella Althaus-Reid contributed to liberation through education or pedagogy as a «leading out.» Because of the way that Althaus-Reid leads us out of the closet of oppressive social and theological frameworks, this article argues that her work is simultaneously theological and pedagogical. Paulo Freire’s notions on pedagogy provide an apt theoretical framework for the analysis. Reading Althaus-Reid’s Indecent Theology through Freire’s work provides a re-contextualized understanding of his pedagogical theory. Thus, allowing the liberatory theological and pedagogical praxis of Indecent Theology to emerge. It concludes that —through a deeper appreciation of Althaus-Reid’s Indecent Theology’s liberatory nature— her …

The process of creating a portrait relies on a series of intimate interactions. Portraits, even those that depict a single individual, are a visual testament to a relationship. Portrait sitters are required to engage with artists in the creation of their personal visual narrative. According to a simplistic fitting attitude analysis of admirable, what it is for someone to be admirable just is for admiration to be an appropriate attitude to have toward that person. But this analysis faces the “wrong kind of reasons” or “conflation” problem: it may sometimes be appropriate to admire someone without that person being admirable. For instance, if my admiring an evil dictator would somehow save 100 lives, it would be appropriate for me to admire him. But that doesn’t make him admirable.

Andrew T. Hatcher rose to one of the highest positions in U.S. government when he became the first African American to serve as associate White House press secretary in 1960 under the administration of President John F. Kennedy and during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement. This is a historical content analysis that analyzes Hatcher’s role through primary sources, presidential archives, and select national, local, and minority newspapers.

The Ties That Bind: The Meaning Of Attachment In State Constitutional Revision, 1820-1845, Allison J. Morvant

This thesis examines the changing conception of attachment in state constitutional conventions from 1820 – 1845. During the colonial and early national periods, attachment was defined primarily through property ownership. Accordingly, early state constitutions limited the rights of citizenship, namely suffrage, to free white men who possessed a freehold. Over time, in response to pressure from upwardly mobile white males, state constitutional conventions began to create a new political order based on an expanded definition of attachment: non-propertied white males could exhibit attachment and be granted citizenship through affection, civic virtue, and public duty.

Relics From White Supremacy: Why Historians Need To Reevaluate Their Use Of The Word “Riot” To Describe Racial Violence In The South During The Reconstruction And Post-Reconstruction Eras, Brett Kunkel

Using the Memphis race riot of 1866 as a case study, this essay argues that historians need to reevaluate their use of the word “riot” to describe the racial violence of the Reconstruction and Post-Reconstruction eras. Although most historians agree about the nature of the violence in Memphis and events like it, they nevertheless continue to refer to them as “riots” rather than “massacres.” This essay hones in on three qualities the word “riot” connotes: spontaneity, mutual aggression and justification, while noting their inconsistencies with the massacre in Memphis and suggesting that similar discrepancies may characterize similar events during the …

Despite being popular eras, research concerning the European Renaissance and Reformation often push minorities to the side, instead focusing on the men in power. This paper discusses the social freedoms and restrictions on women loving women from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries in England and mainland Europe, and the changes, or lack thereof, that occurred as the Renaissance transitioned into the Reformation, including examples of religious and legal codes, art and literature, and the lives of women from the time. The author used primary source books and documents along with secondary research articles, books and journals to support her case.

Building Relationships: Art Making And Empty Bowls, Susan R. Whiteland

How can collaborative art making foster relationship building for those involved? A Problem Based Learning project that investigated food insecurity and the creation of clay soup bowls provided an answer for a number of students, and various community members. This article follows the story of a university professor’s involvement with her students in a partnership with a local intermediate school when they pursued an initiative to include art in their STEAM based curriculum dedicated to meeting a local need. Older adults, elementary students, and a variety of other interested individuals joined the effort and demonstrated how art can build relationships.

Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies

Joyce Carol Oates’s novel, You Must Remember This, examines themes of memory, time, and nostalgia through verbal descriptions of iconic and fictional photographs (such as Rocky Marciano, Holocaust Victims, Atomic Mushroom Clouds, Rita Hayworth). An analysis of the photographic imagery in the novel reveals discrepancies between surface appearances and embedded social and cultural ideological contexts within the work. Photographs are shown to undermine the overt conformity and conservatism of postwar America by exposing its underlying uncertainties and tensions. These tensions are explored through the perspective of a rebellious adolescent female, whose struggles highlight Oates’s critique of power, violence, and postwar …
