Gender Inequality In Unpaid Domestic Housework And Childcare Activities And Its Consequences On Childbearing Decisions: Evidence From Iran, Mahmoud Ghazi Tabatabaei, Nader Mehri
Gender Inequality In Unpaid Domestic Housework And Childcare Activities And Its Consequences On Childbearing Decisions: Evidence From Iran, Mahmoud Ghazi Tabatabaei, Nader Mehri
Journal of International Women's Studies
The present study addressed gender inequality in unpaid domestic housework and childcare activities and its presumed impact on childbearing decisions in Iran. We used the second Iran’s Time Use Study (2014-2015), representing the urban population to investigate how the number of small children (aged seven and lower) affected the time devoted to unpaid domestic housework as well as childcare activities of urban employed couples in Iran.
The univariate analysis provided sufficient evidence of increasing workload with the number of small children for employed women, while men’s workload remained almost unchanged across all parities. The results indicated that an increase in …
Feminist Media Studies Across Borders: Re-Visiting Studies Within The Brazilian National Context, Carolina Matos
Feminist Media Studies Across Borders: Re-Visiting Studies Within The Brazilian National Context, Carolina Matos
Journal of International Women's Studies
Feminist media studies in the US and the UK have built a strong tradition of research, which has aimed to look at the correlation between structural gender inequalities in society and how these have been played out in the media. These range from classic studies on soap operas to debates on the sexualization of culture and the construction of forms of femininity within a post-feminist context (i.e. Gill, 2006; McNair, 2002; Ang, 1985; Tuchman at el, 1978). Research on the relationship between gender and the media has arguably become an important arena of inquiry in Latin America. Feminist media studies …
Autonomous Women's Movement In Kerala: Historiography, Maya Subrahmanian
Autonomous Women's Movement In Kerala: Historiography, Maya Subrahmanian
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper traces the historical evolution of the women’s movement in the southernmost Indian state of Kerala and explores the related social contexts. It also compares the women’s movement in Kerala with its North Indian and international counterparts. An attempt is made to understand how feminist activities on the local level differ from the larger scenario with regard to their nature, causes, and success. Mainstream history writing has long neglected women’s history, just as women have been denied authority in the process of knowledge production. The Kerala Model and the politically triggered society of the state, with its strong Marxist …

When Literature Scholars Write For General Readers: A Two Person, First Person Essay, Sue Norton, Laurence W. Mazzeno Prof.
When Literature Scholars Write For General Readers: A Two Person, First Person Essay, Sue Norton, Laurence W. Mazzeno Prof.
Articles
This dually authored first-person essay offers a narrative account of the far-ranging writing experiences of two well-established academics who, like many others working in higher education, contribute writing to mainstream publications as well as to scholarly ones. The essay considers the implications for professional and personal reputations when material targeted at one kind of audience is easily accessible by another through internet ‘context collapse.’ It argues for an inextricable connection between authorial ethics and the essential rigour of all good writing, and it encourages scholar-writers to invest their energies in nonscholarly writing for its value to society.

Conservation and natural resource management are increasingly attending the ethical elements of public decisions. Ethical considerations are challenging, in part, because they typically require accounting for the moral consideration of various human and nonhuman forms of life, whose interests sometimes conflict (or seem to conflict). A valuable tool for such evaluations is the formal analysis of ethical arguments. An ethical argument is a collection of premises, logically interrelated, to yield a conclusion that can be expressed in the form, “We ought to…” According to the rules of logic, a conclusion is supported by an argument if all its …

The Journey Of Return: Reviving The Past To Redefine The Present, Nouf A. Arige
Publications and Research
This paper investigates Octavia Butler's Neo-Slave narrative novel Kindred, which was first released in 1979. Her effective utilization of time travel altered the lives of a married interracial couple, Dana and Kevin. To write this textual fantasy, Butler incorporated the tool of time travel to revisit the Antebellum South in the 1800s. Scholars who have read Kindred, including Marianna Hirsch, Randall Kenan, Christene Leveq and Lisa Suhair Majaj, have examined the novel based on the notions of memory and its relation to remaking American history. They agreed that the memory of the past has a lingering deep impact on the …

Techniques And Methods Change, Methodology Remains The Same: Web Technology Use As Cosmetic Change In Cfl Classrooms, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Liu, Nannan Wang, Christopher Heselton
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
Technology has been a staple in the language classroom for more than fifty years. From audio cassettes, to video tapes, to multimedia CD-ROMs, to static and interactive web technologies, language teachers have taken the time to learn these tools and integrate them into the classroom experience. Each new technology, each new app, creates an opportunity to alter the experience of teaching and learning—often supporting increased authentic interactions with the Chinese language. This potential however can go unrealized when the ways the technologies are used align with more traditional grammar and vocabulary-focused teaching methodologies and promote efficiency over communication. In this …

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) is a critical language in the United States, and the importance to have competent CFL teachers has been more and more realized. However, the literature does not show sufficient research on CFL teacher competency. To fill the gap, a series of exploratory research studies are initiated. As a part of the initiation, this study overviews the professional guidelines, resources, standards and requirements for CFL education in the U.S. at the national and state level. The findings will be useful for designing teacher education program and teacher training program. In addition, students teachers, pre-service teachers, …

First Language Transfer In Mandarin Compositions Written By Learners With English As Mother Tongue, Rui Liu
First Language Transfer In Mandarin Compositions Written By Learners With English As Mother Tongue, Rui Liu
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
To help Mandarin learners express their ideas in compositions is one of the toughest jobs for teachers of Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) who frequently find that their students’ works are rife with inappropriate expressions as well as grammatical errors. Mother tongue transfer, which is an important part of second language acquisition study, has always been used to account for the various problems occurring in second language learners’ study process. This study carries out both quantitative and qualitative analyses on the errors in compositions made by Mandarin learners with English as their mother tongue. Four categories of errors are …

This study overviews a case where TED conferences were integrated into a university-based Chinese language course in New Zealand. It also discusses the major findings emerging from implementing this innovative pedagogy as well as the recommendations for future research. While motivating students to use Chinese in public setting, the approach has also enhanced critical thinking skills and co-learning in language classrooms. This paper …
