On Fire In Baltimore: Black Mormon Women And Conversion In A Raging City, Rachel Cope
On Fire In Baltimore: Black Mormon Women And Conversion In A Raging City, Rachel Cope
BYU Studies
In her thought-provoking book, On Fire in Baltimore: Black Mormon Women and Conversion in a Raging City, Laura Rutter Strickling captures the complex conversion narratives of fifteen Latter-day Saint women who found space for themselves within a “historically White church” (xiii). The book provides powerful accounts of individual spiritual journeys while also grappling with the racial tensions that implicitly and explicitly influence black and white interaction within and without The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Next Mormons: How Millennials Are Changing The Lds Church, Stephan Cranney
The Next Mormons: How Millennials Are Changing The Lds Church, Stephan Cranney
BYU Studies
The Next Mormons is a mixed-methods work (that is, it includes both representative statistics as well as interviews) on the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of millennial members of The Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the United States. Written by well-known religious journalist Jana Riess, with assistance from Benjamin Knoll, a political science academic, the book is built around the results of their Next Mormons Survey. On the whole, the book is an enjoyable read, reflecting Reiss’s skill as a journalist. The book was clearly written to be accessible, with little reference to major theories in the …
Revelations And Translations, Volume 4: Book Of Abraham And Related Manuscripts, Thomas A. Wayment
Revelations And Translations, Volume 4: Book Of Abraham And Related Manuscripts, Thomas A. Wayment
BYU Studies
Volume four of the Revelations and Translations series presents for the first time a transcription and complete photographic reproduction of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ holdings of all the manuscripts, grammars, lexical aids, and other resources that were produced in the process of creating the book of Abraham. The series has already published full editions of Joseph Smith’s earliest extant manuscript revelations, many of which form the basis of the Doctrine and Covenants (volume 1); the revelations that were published during Joseph Smith’s lifetime (volume 2); and the full printer’s manuscript of the Book of Mormon (volume …
The Parables Of Jesus: Revealing The Plan Of Salvation, Micah Christensen
The Parables Of Jesus: Revealing The Plan Of Salvation, Micah Christensen
BYU Studies
It has been just over fifty years since Elder Spencer W. Kimball gave his address titled “The Gospel Vision of the Arts,” raising the possibility of having a “Michelangelo” of the Restoration. Ever since, many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been looking for their version of a Sistine Chapel. Yet, what if the highest expression of Church art is not a monumental fresco or statue but, instead, an intimate combination of sacred text and art—a Book of Hours for the Restoration? This radical concept is tested in a new book combining an exegesis of …
Joseph Paul Vorst, Herman Du Toit
Joseph Paul Vorst, Herman Du Toit
BYU Studies
The discovery of a Latter-day Saint artist from a former era, who had almost been forgotten to the vicissitudes of history, is a noteworthy event in the annals of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Paul Vorst’s prolific painting career spanned two continents and two world wars during his short lifetime. Vorst excelled in a variety of techniques and media, producing a significant body of work. Glen Nelson’s painstaking research has resulted in an eminently readable monograph compiled from multiple sources in Germany and the United States. It is the first book to explore Vorst’s life and …
The Expanded Canon: Perspectives On Mormonism And Sacred Texts, Roger Terry
The Expanded Canon: Perspectives On Mormonism And Sacred Texts, Roger Terry
BYU Studies
If you are looking for excellent scholarship and insights into Latter-day Saint scripture, you might want to start with this new compilation from Greg Kofford Books. The authors of the fourteen essays in this volume explore a wide range of topics related to the Latter-day Saint canon and offer a surprisingly consistent level of discourse. Usually anthologies include a few weak links, but that is not the case with this volume.

Entangled, Katherine Cox
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
I create objects to incite wonder through their exuberance, inviting one to explore the beauty found in the strange and offering the viewer a way to interact with the discomfort of the unknown. Mysculptures are an assembly of engaging surfaces and forms revealing varying texturesandvibrant colors referencing natural and fabricated worlds. Each sculpture is entangled within its own environment or narrative and each is adorned for its own role, finding a balance between discord and harmony, captivation and repulsion.
Each is an individual exploration of the distinct qualities inherent within each object. They are precious in scale and stimulate …
A Walk Through Shadows, Nicholas Sheldon
A Walk Through Shadows, Nicholas Sheldon
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
“A Walk Through Shadows” is an investigation of dream states and their emotional and psychological effects, which I have been exploring for this past year with large-scale black and white copper plate aquatint prints. Each work is a response to the surreal and bizarre nature of dreaming and the themes and topics that seep from my own subconscious. Each work allows for the examination of the fantastical and the absurd with imagery that can suggest universal concepts from life and death, to love and war.
These prints break from the traditionally printed square plate centrally placed on the paper, to …
Social Egalitarianism: How Does Marginalization Affect An Individual’S Support For Welfare Recipients?, Brodie W. Edgerton
Social Egalitarianism: How Does Marginalization Affect An Individual’S Support For Welfare Recipients?, Brodie W. Edgerton
Student Publications
This work examines how identification in a historically marginalized group in the United States affects individuals' opinions towards welfare recipients. Using three marginalized groups: African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, and Women, this study compares how each group views welfare recipients while discussing how people in general view welfare recipients. This study finds that there are some statistical differences between the opinions of welfare recipients between certain groups, but not amongst other groups, indicating the importance of society on American politics in the present day.

Antiquities Theft: The Role Of The Museum In Modern Symbolic Violence, Meredith M. Amato
Antiquities Theft: The Role Of The Museum In Modern Symbolic Violence, Meredith M. Amato
Student Publications
Humans have been collecting artifacts for centuries, whether it is for their aesthetic value or for the acquisition of knowledge. However, these artifacts have, in most cases, been taken without permission from the countries of origin. Today, museums are struggling with the issue of repatriation and many refuse to return their priceless possessions. Western museums and their supporters are arguing that repatriation will put the artifacts in danger and hurt the chances for humanity to learn from them. The arguments of these museums are an attempt of symbolic violence on non-Western nations, who are seen as unfit or unable to …
“Power In Repose”: Sleep And Agency In American Literature, 1875-1916, Hannah Leigh Huber
“Power In Repose”: Sleep And Agency In American Literature, 1875-1916, Hannah Leigh Huber
Theses and Dissertations
“Power in Repose” argues that American literature provided its own response to the cult of wakefulness that emerged at the turn of the twentieth century. Narratives by authors Henry James, Charles Chesnutt, Edith Wharton, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman emerged from a time in which conceptions of rest were reshaped by the coalescence of America’s Protestant work ethic and industrial advancement. By complicating the separation of public and private space, my chosen texts present characters exhausted by the permeation of the supposedly impervious aspects of modernity, such as artificial light, traffic commotion, and round-the-clock labor and social activity. Marginalized figures are …
A Conceptual Mapping Approach For Presenting A Practical Past: Addressing Responsibility Through Contextualization In Information System Design For The Ward One Mobile Application, Sadia Obaid Khan
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents and documents a model for telling history through technology using the Ward One application for iOS mobile devices as a test site for the idea of conceptual mapping. The historical-information delivery system was created to mobilize the rhetoricity of representation that is a procedural necessity of technological mediation.
The paper begins by explaining the exigence of the app—to tell the history of an African-American community displaced from the land now occupied by the University of South Carolina as a result of racially discriminating housing policies in Columbia, SC and across the United States. It then addresses the …

Ruined Ingénue And Redeemed Sister: Representations Of The Sex Worker In Late-Nineteenth-Century American Fiction, Helen Stec
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Male-authored novels written in the mid-to-late nineteenth century frequently denied female sexual desire and agency and adhered to themes of poverty and seduction. Often, male authors explicitly punished their female characters for their sexual indiscretions, typically by imposing death sentences upon them and emphasizing how surviving sex workers were spiritually irredeemable. However, the few female-authored novels from this time that address prostitution were less encumbered by this patriarchal framework and more aware of the nuances of the female sexual experience. Female authors were generally more forgiving and sympathetic to the sex workers they wrote about. They often allowed these women …

Reconsidering What Nietzsche Meant By The Same In The Doctrine Of The Eternal Recurrence, Wilhelm Patrick Joseph S. Strebel
Reconsidering What Nietzsche Meant By The Same In The Doctrine Of The Eternal Recurrence, Wilhelm Patrick Joseph S. Strebel
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
Hermeneutical considerations involving the nuances of words in translation have a bearing in interpreting philosophical concepts. Stambaugh highlighted the eternal in Nietzsche as well as the meaning of the Same in the doctrine of the Eternal Recurrence of the Same. As translation of the German word das Gleiche, she provided important considerations regarding the nuances of das Gleiche and the sense of how the English word “the same” could capture as well as leave out some meanings in the original. This paper builds on Stambaugh’s observations by providing a linguistic analysis of das Gleiche to open up to how it …
Positionality Matters: School Choice Decisions Based On Ethnographic Accounts Of African American Parents, Dr. Stacy L. Thomas
Positionality Matters: School Choice Decisions Based On Ethnographic Accounts Of African American Parents, Dr. Stacy L. Thomas
Dissertations
This research delves into experiences with reasoning and selected criteria for choosing the right school for their children. Beginning with a series of vignettes that assist with recognition of parental empowerment, this research archives acknowledgement of their own positionality when it comes to making life changing decisions. As selected parents of African American children grapple with the strategic balance and possibilities of educational outlets, family and finances, they offer ethnographic accounts of their successes and failures with school choice. Individual accounts of parental school choice decisions posing as data ascertained from interviews provided research that explored the critical frequencies and …

Just Brew It!: Coffee's Impact On A Writing And Communication Center Space, Kevin Dvorak, Janine Morris, Jacqueline Lytle, Emalee M. Shrewsbury
CAHSS Faculty Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia
Our panel will present results of a semester-long study on coffee's presence in our Writing and Communication Center and argue for the importance of ephemera in understanding how individuals experience their time in the center. Adding on to the existing discussions about space and writing centers, this presentation will address what has been lacking from the ongoing writing center conversation about coffee—until now.
Wittgenstein And Embodied Cognition: A Critique Of The Language Of Thought, Amber Sheldon
Wittgenstein And Embodied Cognition: A Critique Of The Language Of Thought, Amber Sheldon
Keck Undergraduate Humanities Research Fellows
The assertions of this paper will be concerned with language acquisition as it is presented in Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations in contrast with Jerry Fodor’s theory of tacit language described in The Language of Thought. This symbolic mental language is often analogized with the symbolic “language” of a computer. Fodor theorizes that the mind has an innate symbolic (and physically real) system of representation that comes prior to any natural language. Famously, with the private language argument, Wittgenstein contends that language is performed and produced by activity. One learns a language through practice and participation. In this paper, …
Reworking The White-Masculine Ideal, Steven H. Gonzalez
Reworking The White-Masculine Ideal, Steven H. Gonzalez
Art Theses and Dissertations
This text functions as an exploration of self through artistic practice, a designated space for reflection on contemporary Queer experience. In looking specifically at the permeation of the idealized-white-masculine figure as found within Western visual culture, social media and gay pornography become isolated as sites where these figures are commonly found. This line of inquiry defines how the ideal is reified through these differing digital platforms and the social implications the homogenized male form has on raced individuals. In addition to determining the image of the perfect masculine physique through research, this text expands on how its' imaged representation becomes …
Thesis/Thesis Document 2, Jessamyn Plotts
Thesis/Thesis Document 2, Jessamyn Plotts
Art Theses and Dissertations
Thesis/thesis document 2 explores the subversive power of the painted image, made by a physical performative act. Such acts are not confined to the production of the art object, but expand across the landscape, involving the minds, bodies, and things of culture adjacent to the making process. Following the thinking of Maurice-Merleau Ponty, Thesis/thesis document 2 understands painting not as the container of a finite, legible message, but as a physical platform for the conveyance of perceptual, personal, and experiential ambiguity. Made in this way, painted images offer a powerful alternative to the proliferation of propaganda and advertisement …

Interrelationship Of Forms: Research Into The Juxtaposition Of Material, Color, And Texture, Emily Bartolone
Honors Theses
I have completed a body of artistic work composed of a series of paintings with the intent of exploring my use of material, color and texture. I am interested in using these tools to complete paintings which feel equally balanced and surprising, with subtleties that materialize through time spent with each piece. This exploration will continue past my thesis project, as the intention behind this project was to obtain a firmer grasp on myself as an artist along with the body of work I wish to pursue in the coming years.
Music Therapists’ Knowledge Of And Attitudes Towards Sustainability: Instruments, Sarah Whitehouse
Music Therapists’ Knowledge Of And Attitudes Towards Sustainability: Instruments, Sarah Whitehouse
Honors Theses
Sustainability has become a common point of conversation and concern in today’s society. The purpose of this project was to explore salient issues, attitudes and practices in music therapy sustainability. Information was gathered through an in-depth review of the materials used in the make and manufacturing of commonly used instruments in music therapy practice. In addition, a survey was sent to music therapy professionals with the MT-BC (Music Therapist – Board Certified) credentials to ascertain current knowledge of and attitudes toward sustainability within the profession.
