The Forgotten Expedition Of The Michigan Polar Bears, Laura Anthon, Jamie Breyfogle, Timothy Embertson, Natalie Weg
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
The Michigan Polar Bear expedition saw Allied forces leading a controversial excursion into Northern Russia during the concluding years of World War I. Despite thousands of soldiers being sent to interfere with the Russian Civil War, the Polar Bear Expedition has been lost from collective memory. We publicly inquired about the expedition, then combined this research with a found scholarly consensus about the lack of cognizance relating to the events. This revealed a disconnect, which led us to inquire as to the nature and origin of its historical omission. Our primary sources of research focused on the oral histories of …

How To Distinguish Qualities And Dispositions, Seth Reed
How To Distinguish Qualities And Dispositions, Seth Reed
Theses
There is an intuitive difference between a qualitative and a dispositional predicate. Qualitative predicates seemingly refer to inherent features of an object, while dispositional predicates point outward to possible interactions. Attempts to further spell this distinction have proven difficult, however. Past approaches have either started from metaphysical assumptions or compared paradigmatic cases of each side-by-side. In this paper I offer a new approach to solving this puzzle. Starting with a qualitative or dispositional predicate of a property, we can examine how that differs from a predicate of the other kind that applies, in virtue of that property, to the same …
Stage Management For Cry It Out, Katie Joachim
Stage Management For Cry It Out, Katie Joachim
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
Over the course of seven weeks, the Hope College Theatre Department produced the play Cry It Out by Molly Smith Metzler. The stage management team led each rehearsal and created rehearsal schedules and reports. This information was then synthesized and communicated with the design and production teams, then later reviewed and discussed in production meetings. As the play moved from standard rehearsals into technical rehearsals, the stage manager oversaw all the backstage crews and technicians. In performance, the stage manager called every lighting and sound cue, while keeping an open line of communication with the Assistant Stage Managers, Light Board …
Hope College And The Vietnam War Era: "We Only Started To Care When It Affected Us.", Halla Maas, Olivia Brickley
Hope College And The Vietnam War Era: "We Only Started To Care When It Affected Us.", Halla Maas, Olivia Brickley
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
This project focuses on Hope College during the Vietnam War era. During this time, the draft created moral dilemmas for both students and faculty. When it started affecting themselves and people they knew, students felt that they needed to be educated about the war. The draft also meant that students sought deferments through such means as studying ministry, pre med, and other sciences. Hope students noticed that young men who were able to avoid the draft were usually privileged and not a part of the minority class. This led many Hope students to protest the draft and the war. These …
Music Programs In Urban Schools, Mikayla Battistone
Music Programs In Urban Schools, Mikayla Battistone
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
It is important to implement and maintain a music program within an urban school containing a high population of at-risk students. With the awareness of mental illness increasing, we are more knowledgeable of the cognitive deficits caused by ongoing abuse and neglect--often called complex trauma. The effects music can have on the brain combats the negative cognitive and emotional impacts of complex trauma, which is essentially the goal of music therapy. Not every child has the opportunity and/or means to experience music therapy. However, if music programs are offered in schools, kids can reap the positive benefits of music by …
Warhols Wake, Tiffany Gilliam
Warhols Wake, Tiffany Gilliam
Communication Theses
The world of visual art has devolved into a commercial enterprise. Part of the decline in visual art arises from artist' surrender to media environment influence, as an exploration of the life and work of noteworthy artist Andy Warhol reveals. This study terms such artist surrender Warhols Wake and elucidates its features. However, by examining, through an interpretive biographic method, the life and work of 4 other artists who responded to media environment influence differently, we gain insight into how creative consciousness can gainfully resist Warhols Wake, in a move that Marshall McLuhan calls "anti-environmental."

Evidence For Equality?: Guatemalan Adolescents' Views On Gender, Amy E. Beasley, Katelyn E. Poelker, Judith L. Gibbons, Danielle Skogen
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
Guatemala is known for its beautiful landscapes, delicious food, and vibrant traditional textiles. Despite the country’s many treasures, Guatemalans face many challenges including gender inequality and wealth disparity. Issues pertaining to youth are of particular importance, as approximately 56% of the population is under 25 years old (Central Intelligence Agency, 2018). Gender inequality in Guatemala may be perpetuated by traditional values of machismo and marianismo (Gibbons & Luna, 2015). Machismo refers to the expectation that men be dominant, respected, and strong providers for their family (Arciniega, Anderson, Tover-Blank, & Travey, 2008). Conversely, marianismo is the expectation that women be pure …
Found In Translation: The Complexities Of Edgar Allan Poe In Translation By Charles Baudelaire, Kellyanne Fitzgerald
Found In Translation: The Complexities Of Edgar Allan Poe In Translation By Charles Baudelaire, Kellyanne Fitzgerald
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
Literary critics have traditionally lauded Charles Baudelaire’s work in translation as the key reason for the success of Edgar Allan Poe in France. While Baudelaire’s voice and editorial choices did affect his translations, the success of his Poe translations was not entirely due to his choices. An idiosyncrasy in the relationship between Poe’s writing style and the structure of French syntax is one of several factors which elevate Poe in translation, which suggests a more complex situation than critics have previously realized. Understanding the context of a translation and the constituent factors of its success (or lack thereof) allows readers …
Iranian Cinema In Transition: Relative Truth And Morality In Asghar Farhadi’S Films, Mazyar Mahdavifar
Iranian Cinema In Transition: Relative Truth And Morality In Asghar Farhadi’S Films, Mazyar Mahdavifar
Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses
In addition to box office success, Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi’s films have achieved national and international critical acclaims. However, it is not only this rare achievement of critical and commercial success that sets Farhadi apart from other Iranian filmmakers, but also, his new approach to the issues of truth and morality which have been age-long themes in the history of Iranian art, literature, and cinema. Compared to his predecessors such as Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, and Jafar Panahi, Farhadi’s viewpoint on these themes is distinctly secular. This thesis focuses on the significance of the change Farhadi’s approach has brought on …

Student As Expert: Peer Learning To Support Digital Scholarship In The Classroom, Clinton K. Baugess
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Libraries and librarians have adopted a variety of approaches to support digital humanities (DH). Rooted in a small college environment, this poster will detail a peer-learning model adopted by one library to support classroom digital projects with trained students, who have completed an 8-week summer digital scholarship fellowship. Similar to other peer learning models in libraries to expand instruction and reference services, trained students can expand a library’s support for DH by teaching in the classroom and providing consultations, enhance their own digital and presentation skills, and support student learning as both expert and peer.

Parodic Archipelago: Friday, Or, The Other Island, Vendredi Ou La Vie Sauvage And Foe, Marie Bellec
Parodic Archipelago: Friday, Or, The Other Island, Vendredi Ou La Vie Sauvage And Foe, Marie Bellec
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis examines the concept of parody through three novels, Friday or the Other Island, Vendredi ou la Vie Sauvage and Foe, rewriting Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. I focus more specifically on the character of the island as the metaphor of the process of rewriting, and I argue that the multiple rewrites shape an archipelago. I apply Linda Hutcheon’s critical work A Theory of Parody to show how the island’s paradoxical aspect illustrates the parody’s paradoxical aspect: it is constrained – the island is isolated and the parody is forced to follow a literary format or pattern, …
Engaging Sacred Space And Experiencing God In The Mountains: A Study Of The Non-Traditional Worship Environment Of Mountain Cathedrals, An Ecumenical Meetup Group Based In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brendan Isaiah Nixon
Engaging Sacred Space And Experiencing God In The Mountains: A Study Of The Non-Traditional Worship Environment Of Mountain Cathedrals, An Ecumenical Meetup Group Based In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brendan Isaiah Nixon
Geography ETDs
This paper focuses on the non-traditional Christian worship site of Mountain Cathedrals in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I argue that affectual and emotional responses are elicited from the congregants of Mountain Cathedrals through the process of sacralization. It is shown that Christian worship in a non-traditional outdoor setting affects the ways in which the congregants engage with, participate in, and create sacred space. I survey current literatures of sacred space, the contemporary Christian church, and non-traditional worships spaces. Using the literature as a backdrop, I utilize Mountain Cathedrals as a case study for understanding the ways in which sacred space is …
Dissonances Of Dispossession: Narrating Colonialism And Slavery In The Expansion Of Capitalism, W. Oliver Baker
Dissonances Of Dispossession: Narrating Colonialism And Slavery In The Expansion Of Capitalism, W. Oliver Baker
English Language and Literature ETDs
This project studies how ethnic American literature of the long nineteenth century represents the relationship between the dispossession of lands and lives—the histories of settler colonialism and slavery—and the making of democracy and capitalism in the United States. We often think of this relationship in terms of temporally distinct stages in which the formal equality of democracy and the marketplace overcome and thus leave behind the direct domination of colonization and enslavement. However, I focus on how the early novels of Indigenous, African, and Mexican American writers from the period of manifest destiny to the New Deal era represent the …
More Than Republican Motherhood: How Education Helped Women Find Agency In Revolutionary America, Emily J. Miller
More Than Republican Motherhood: How Education Helped Women Find Agency In Revolutionary America, Emily J. Miller
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
This thesis is a case study examining the lives of three women who lived in the early American republic: Theodosia Bartow-Burr, Margaret Shippen-Arnold, and Angelica Schuyler-Church, within the context of republican motherhood. While republican motherhood remains a vital concept in the field of early American women’s history, the role was more expansive than historians originally thought. Though all three of these women would remain republican mothers, they would also become “intellectual friends”, “deputy husbands,” and “female politicians,” respectively. By understanding the lives that these women lived within the construct of republican motherhood we gain a fuller and more diverse picture …

“Poor Creature:” Class Subjugation in Samuel Richardson’s Pamela
In Samuel Richardson’s Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded, published in 1740, the
struggles of the novel’s heroine, Pamela, reveal significant marginalization due to her
class status as a servant. A linguistic and literary analysis reveals a peculiarity, the
excessive use of the word “creature,” which I believe Richardson intentionally employs
to reveal the source of Pamela’s feelings of marginalization. In Richardson’s text, the
word “creature” is used one hundred fifty-nine times. Of those one hundred fifty-nine
times, one hundred twenty- six are …

Screaming, Humming: A Look Into Student Theatrical Direction And The Importance Of Queer Narratives On Stage And In The Rehearsal Room, Kropveld Danielle
Honors Theses
There is a large lack of discussion and writing concerning the intersections of queer theory, theatre as an art form, and student direction. My thesis attempts to add to this small amount of work. Using historical evidence, I define radical queer theory and its implications for art. I contextualize my own work in the rehearsal room with the piece Screaming, Humming by Hannah Manikowski with this framework, and speak to my experience of casting and rehearsal.
As a student director whose acting collaborators are also students, there are additional considerations to be taken into account. This experience also serves as …
