Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Have you ever noticed just how much you can learn about what a person has going on in life without asking them a single question? All you have to do is hop on Facebook, scroll through twitter, or scan Instagram and you can see updates on everything! From the birth of a first child to the death of a loved one, from their favorite new show to Fantasy Football failures, it is pretty easy to learn a lot about a person and their life today with only so much as a couple of clicks on a screen or a keyboard.
Historical Deficiencies And Present Needs, Jordan Voges
Historical Deficiencies And Present Needs, Jordan Voges
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
The second decade of the twenty-first century is drawing to a close. In the realm of the sciences, round-the-clock work continues to discover whatever might fill in the next paradigmatic gap, cure some heretofore fatal disease, or make the tabloid headlines.1 If the recent past is any indicator, from the discovery of the Higgs Particle at CERN to the enamoring photos of the Pluto system and Ultima Thule by the aptly named New Horizons space probe, science has and will continue to stir excitement in the global public.

Funerals- Typical Planning And A Typological Sermon, Joshua H. Jones
Funerals- Typical Planning And A Typological Sermon, Joshua H. Jones
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Like many other aspects of our culture, the landscape of planning and officiating funerals seems to have changed quite rapidly over the last decade. That is not to say that many of the things happening today were not present previously. However, the intensity and frequency of what we might call “challenging funerals” appears to have escalated. In what follows, I hope to provide a brief sketch of the anatomy of what may be encountered in funeral planning, as well as some proposals for how Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) pastors might faithfully handle some of the challenging aspects of ministering to …

Post-'98: The Normal Gay, Christian Rush
Post-'98: The Normal Gay, Christian Rush
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
James Collard’s post-gay is a secret within the gay community, yet the ramifications of what he claimed our community was heading toward in 1998 are spreading across our community without us realizing it. This thesis tasks itself with unpacking what it meant for Collard to call our community “post-gay,” and how that term came to be throughout the twentieth and twenty-first century within the gay community. The thesis explores major gay texts found in literature, film, and on digital spaces in the ways they have shaped the post-gay identity that we, as gay people, have found ourselves living in. Ultimately …

Re-Thinking The Weird (In The) West: Multi-Ethnic Literatures And The Southwest, Jana M. Koehler
Re-Thinking The Weird (In The) West: Multi-Ethnic Literatures And The Southwest, Jana M. Koehler
English Language and Literature ETDs
My dissertation examines the genre of weird fiction, specifically texts that engage the concept of the Weird West. While authors such as Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft are often seen as the founders of this genre, I argue that ethnic and women writers, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ishmael Reed, Leslie Marmon Silko, Lucha Corpi, and others, explore the hidden histories of the West and Southwest in ways that incite a rethinking of the weird. Most importantly, I seek to demonstrate how the weird is not only a literary genre but a literary aesthetic and methodology that women and …
The Texts Of Faith In Times Of Tragedy, Ryan Anderson
The Texts Of Faith In Times Of Tragedy, Ryan Anderson
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
This paper will focus on that phenomenon and its longstanding tension with American Christianity. I will investigate how American civil religion emerges when faced with tragedy. The investigation will be done by way of a case study: a thorough analysis of Celine Dion’s performance of “God Bless America,” the history of the original song and its author, and the variety of responses her performance has fostered both then and now, particularly online. What we will discover is that practitioners of civil religion existentially and therapeutically depend on an “encounter with the divine” during times of national tragedy. This encounter is …

Meet Alexa. Not the ubiquitous digital assistant, but an individual in the process of crafting an identity for herself. Alexa Abraham is a 24-year-old woman living in London who defines herself as an ‘influencer.’ A recent article in 1843 Magazine details how Alexa has created this identity of ‘influencer’ using social media, especially Instagram.
Amazons, Indian Princesses, And The Artistic Matriarchs Of The Southwest: On Classicization And The Construction Of Native American Femininity In Museums, Kendall Lovely
Museum Studies Theses
This paper explores the Classical influence within the discourses surrounding museum exhibitions that helped to construct colonial representations of gender. I address how Classical receptions and images of Native Americans rendered into Classically influenced discourses have featured in anthropological and later art market structures within museum displays. Constructions of femininity play a significant role here as these representations, especially in the Southwest, serve to gender colonized and Othered subjects with parallels in Classical ideas about foreign others. My analysis is in two parts: I first explore constructions of femininity in museum exhibitions through these insights. I then consider the agency …

Le Personnel Est Politique: Médias, Esthétique Et Politique De L'Autofiction Chez Christine Angot, Chloé Delaume Et Nelly Arcan, Mercédès Baillargeon
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
By Talon And By Tooth: Disaster Culture, American Literary Naturalism, And The Aesthetics Of (Dis)Integration, Vincent M. Basso
By Talon And By Tooth: Disaster Culture, American Literary Naturalism, And The Aesthetics Of (Dis)Integration, Vincent M. Basso
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study demonstrates how American literary naturalism, roughly between 1870-1910, and U.S. print culture more generally, projected an aesthetics of (dis)integration. The term (dis)integration is particularly useful in thinking through the ways traumatic and disintegrative episodes coordinate and integrate U.S. publics. I periodize this work in the turn-of-the-century because it was then that realist literature coincides with the expansion of the national press and new media technologies like photography and film, all of which facilitated the widespread dissemination of crisis narratives, marking the period as the advent of what is popularly referred to as disaster culture in the United States. …

Shaping Readers: The Moral Impact Of Narrators, Emily Bradley
Shaping Readers: The Moral Impact Of Narrators, Emily Bradley
Senior Honors Theses
Readers who consume stories have the potential to be changed and impacted by the content of narratives. The authors of stories hold a good deal of the influence when it comes to stories, and the characters of the stories—the ones the readers fall in love with or root for or dread—also play a part in reader development. The narrators of the stories, however, are the voices that are presenting the stories, and it is through their worldviews that the readers are most fundamentally shaped. The narrators of The Great Gatsby, The Awakening, The Things They Carried, and the Harry Potter …

Gifts Of Sovereignty: Settler Colonial Capitalism And The Kanaka ʻŌiwi Politics Of Ea, David UahikeaikaleiʻOhu Maile
Gifts Of Sovereignty: Settler Colonial Capitalism And The Kanaka ʻŌiwi Politics Of Ea, David UahikeaikaleiʻOhu Maile
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation examines Hawaiian sovereignty in history, law, and activism. The project tracks Indigenous claims, negotiations, and articulations of sovereignty in Hawai‘i. Using a critically Indigenous approach to Hawaiian studies, I advance two main theses. First, Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are discussed as a community divided on Hawaiian sovereignty. However, I contend that Kānaka Maoli exercise a diversity of strategies and tactics for Hawaiian sovereignty. I show how Kānaka Maoli practice multiple modalities of sovereignty that cumulatively produce the Kanaka ‘Ōiwi (Indigenous Hawaiian) politics of ea (life and sovereignty). Second, the historical development of settler colonial capitalism operationalized the US …
