Your Family in History: HIST 550/700

Juan Vadillo was born on December 24, 1987 to Jose Juan Vadillo and Maria Lavastida in a small town on the outskirts of Mexico D.F. named San Jose Huilango. This was an especially difficult labor due to the proximity to the holidays and the relative lack of hospitals and medical professionals. On Christmas Eve Maria went in to labor and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital but was unable to find a reliable mode of transportation. Instead her and her husband, walked to the home of a midwife who lived a few minutes away. At approximately three in …

“New Hope In The Midst Of Darkness”: Eucatastrophe As Kairos In The Lord Of The Rings, Chance Gamble Apr 2019

“New Hope In The Midst Of Darkness”: Eucatastrophe As Kairos In The Lord Of The Rings, Chance Gamble

English Department Theses

Present-day rhetorical scholarship has largely rectified the neglect of kairos James Kinneavy noted in 1986. However, the ancient Greek concept combining temporal-spatial factors, due measure, situational adaptability, and perfect timing has not seen much use in the rhetorical study of fiction. The application of kairos, a foundational rhetorical device, to fiction has the potential to generate new insights on familiar subject matter. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) may seem an unlikely choice for such inquiry, but there are several factors that make it especially suited to such analysis. Chief among these are the numerous …

Sage, Johnna Ossie Apr 2019

Sage, Johnna Ossie

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Sage explored her highly religious upbringing and relationship with her family. She is of Greek descent and her Greek-American culture played a large role in shaping her identity. Her parents rejected her during her young adulthood due to her sexuality and Sage discussed the impact that the ostracization had on her development. Her positive experience with being a part of a long-term, loving lesbian relationship was one that she frequently came back to during the course of the interview. On top of relationships and religion, Sage also examined her experiences undergoing workplace harassment and feeling unwelcome and unsafe in many …

Exploring My Unique Literacy Experiences As A Ukrainian American Emerging Scholar Through Autoethnography, Diana Prokopiev Apr 2019

Exploring My Unique Literacy Experiences As A Ukrainian American Emerging Scholar Through Autoethnography, Diana Prokopiev

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

This capstone project depicts myself as the research subject as I explore why I make meaning the way that I do in my life. The autoethnography itself—full of reflection, epiphany, reflexive writing, and rich descriptions—provides a preview into my life as a Ukrainian American woman as I participate in three different discourse communities: the domestic community, the academic community, and the religious community. By sharing my literacy experiences, I hope this autoethnography has a transformative impact on all audience members, but especially those who were raised by parents who emigrated to the United States.

Recovering Grace: How One Man's Religious Movement Turned Into A Homeschool Cult, Kathryn Knight Harper Apr 2019

Recovering Grace: How One Man's Religious Movement Turned Into A Homeschool Cult, Kathryn Knight Harper

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

It turned out that the rules about Cabbage Patch kids and Troll dolls weren’t the only things that would leave lasting impressions on ATI students. This curriculum, as I was finding out, was more than just restrictions on toys and media consumption. ATI was the homeschooling program, but IBLP had rules and principles that touched absolutely every area of life. The homeschooling and seminar materials, all written by Gothard and honed over fifty years, were treated as the law by people in both of his organizations. There wasn’t room for debate, and there wasn’t room for dissention. Those who did …

Thinking Outside The Toolbox: A Teaching Resource For Vocational Writing, Dustin Ledford

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

This capstone project combines elements of contextualization, professional writing, and process pedagogy to create a course design for teaching writing in the technical college/vocational school setting. With this course design, students are asked to complete a variety of scenario-driven, workplace-related writing tasks that teach fundamentals of college composition including research, critical thinking, and process-based writing. With this sample curriculum, students write from realistic scenarios from the healthcare industry, especially tasks from the medical office environment. The goal of this course design is to model and promote new practices for teaching writing in vocational settings to better engage students in these …

Sickness In Storytelling: The Effects Of Chronic Illness On Memoir And The Author, Sarah Jackson Apr 2019

Sickness In Storytelling: The Effects Of Chronic Illness On Memoir And The Author, Sarah Jackson

Senior Honors Theses

The thesis will be in two parts, research and creative. The first part will be a research-based paper exploring how the creation and content of memoir is influenced by authors with chronic illness, and the difficulties and unique perspective these authors bring to the craft of memoir will be investigated. The second part will be a short memoir that tells a personal story of living with an autoimmune disease, systemic lupus erythematosus. Painting A Biblical Worldview In Children, Brook Blackwell Apr 2019

Painting A Biblical Worldview In Children, Brook Blackwell

Senior Honors Theses

Children are impressionable beings shaped by the changing world around them; this has become increasingly more true as the years progress and the impact and prevalence of media rises. Television shows, movies, music and books, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can play a tremendous part in the growth of children’s worldviews. It is important for authors and artists to delve deep into the impact of media on the growth and development of children in today’s media-rich world. In doing so, they should hope to find the best way to implement a Christian worldview into the media a child …

The Amygdala Era: Emotion And Experience In Memoir, Meagan Shelley Apr 2019

The Amygdala Era: Emotion And Experience In Memoir, Meagan Shelley

Senior Honors Theses

Amygdala Era is a culmination of short memoirs and brief poetry designed to express a stream of consciousness state of emotion over logic. The work utilizes base, primal parts of the mind such as happiness, sadness, and fear, and dissipates into the emotion and memory that is experienced daily. This is achieved through a focus on creative writing theory including stream of consciousness, interior monologue, and free indirect discourse. Amygdala Era synthesizes the techniques, strategies, and methodology of these three theories by examining past literary examples from world history. Analysis of the targeted market for Amygdala Era is detailed based …

Critical Mentorship For Black Girls: An Autoethnography Of Perseverance, Commitment, And Empowerment, Krystal Huff Apr 2019

Critical Mentorship For Black Girls: An Autoethnography Of Perseverance, Commitment, And Empowerment, Krystal Huff

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Working class Black girls experience multilayered oppression informed by their triadic social identity that sits at the intersection of race, gender, and class in their lives and more specifically in their schooling experiences (Collins, 1986, 1989; Onyeka-Crawford, Patrick, & Chaudry, 2017). A variety of mentoring practices have been adopted among educators throughout the public-school system to remedy the impact of poor educational opportunities for Black girls. In contrast to the use of traditional mentorship practices that solely focus on the individual, critical mentorship seeks to engage and support the cultural, political, and economic contexts that positively shape the experiences and …

Ending The Civil War And Consequences For Congress, Paul Finkelman, Donald R. Kennon Apr 2019

Ending The Civil War And Consequences For Congress, Paul Finkelman, Donald R. Kennon

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

The social changes and human and economic costs of the Civil War led to profound legal and constitutional developments after it ended, not least of which were the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and the many laws devised to protect the civil rights of newly freed African Americans. These amendments and laws worked for a while, but they were ineffective or ineffectively enforced for more than a century.

In Ending the Civil War and the Consequences for Congress, contributors explore how the end of the war both continued the trauma of the conflict and enhanced the potential for the new birth …

A Thinker-Based Perspective On Free Speech And Fake News, Geoffroi G. Castro Apr 2019

A Thinker-Based Perspective On Free Speech And Fake News, Geoffroi G. Castro

Honors Projects

Since the 2016 US Presidential election, the topic of fake news has become extremely prevalent on a global scale. However, the recent issue of disinformation manufactured by malevolent agents has given rise to new potential problems that have led to harmful consequences. Such problematic consequences have led various government institutions to responds in a variety of ways. Given the problematic consequences of these types of actions, should governments intervene by regulating or prohibiting fake news? To answer this question, I present Seana Shiffrin’s unique theory regarding the value of free speech. Within this account, Shiffrin’s follows an autonomy type theory …

Collaboration Coefficient and Modified Collaboration Coefficient is less than 0.5, it means there were fewer trends of authors collaboration. But the study found slight growth from 1013 to 2015 and again decreased. As per the study Goswami, U …

Female Expression In Hispanic Art, Kristine Reynardus Apr 2019

Female Expression In Hispanic Art, Kristine Reynardus

Library Research Scholars Program 2018-2019

I explored female representation in Hispanic/LatinX Art through transcending multiple means of understanding. I provided the historical context of the artist along with relevant biographic information that likely informed their artistic style, whether that be family history or places of study. Another dimension would include the visual representation of the artist’s work. The way I imagine these coming to life would be through mini galleries of well-know and lesser known works of the artist. The last component of the project would be what ties all of this information together: making it a map of the Americas! An early vision of …

The Complexity Of A Soldier: Mitchell Anderson’S Life, Death, And Legacy, Ryan Bilger

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

It is hard to believe that this is my last semester as a Civil War Institute Fellow, but that time has indeed come. When offered my choice of projects for this term, I figured it would only be appropriate to finish out my work on the Killed at Gettysburg project with one last deep dive into the life and legacy of a soldier who died here in Pennsylvania. I know I have stated this several times in my previous reflections on the project, but I feel that Killed at Gettysburg profiles offer an excellent way to consider the battle from …
